CMU prediction thread ...

Watt played at Wisconsin. Im confused.

He started at CMU as a TE and left for Wisconsin (to be a walk on) after a year or two.

Strangely enough, two of the best players in the NFL today were catching balls for CMU that year. Watt and Antonio Brown.

I've got a bad feeling. Think this is a trap game. Too much looking forward to LSU:eek:

Hope I'm wrong

I see it the same way. I think our offense will struggle to move the chains (as we did last week, managing only 15 1st downs). CMU looks like a typical MAC team. Their front 7 on D is stout and physical, and if Trudo is out, our running game could struggle. I think this is a game we will really miss Phillips' outside speed.
Last week Wolford picked apart our secondary (at one point he was 22/25) until our pressure finally wore him down. IMO the CMU QB (Rush) is a better passer, more experienced, and more mobile.
In any bowl-qualifying scenario we absolutely have to have this game. I hope the team isn't looking past the "Chips".
I'll go with 24-22 SU, but I have an uneasy feeling about this one. I'm glad we're playing them in the dome.

Iroquois Nation 21
Chippewas 12

I'll go with KO's numbers.

I've been back and forth with people on this all week
Super nervous and can see the football Gods bringing us bad karma
Cooper Rush is going to be a load to deal with

Cooper Rush is a load for Monmouth, not Syracuse.

While I agree that Rush is a decent QB, our Orange have faced a few good QBs and handled them for the most part. I would expect Bullough to press a little more with the DBs at the line and the standard in-your-face blitzing schemes to rattle the QB.

I get that in the past, Syracuse has lost too many games they should win. However, this staff, HCSS and Co., tend to keep the kids focused: think back two seasons ago. Last season was a fluke with the weak OC and the numerous injuries. Dungey will improve weekly and the whole team has a winning attitude.

I think cmu wins unless our offense gets it together. We can't rely on big plays. Need some grinding offense and punch it in types.

If we get big plays and some special teams to win that's great, I'll take it all day. I'd just be more comfortable if we can get 7 out of some long drives. We were dead in the water if not for the two big plays against wake. My fear is that's our trend right.

Rush is a good QB but I think people seem to be overestimating the talent level of the rest of the team. Yes, they have some solid players, but they cannot run the ball AT ALL, and their defense isn't nearly as stout as Wake's was. I wouldn't be shocked if we hold them to <25 yards on the ground, which will enable us to send more people after Rush and potentially rattle him. And I think we'll run the ball a heck of a lot more consistently this week than we were able to against Wake's front seven.

People with these bad feelings before every game in which we are not an underdog... :eat popcorn:

I understand the trepidation, in general, given our history; But not for this game. Spread may only be 10-13 by the final whistle, but this game will never really be in doubt after half time.

Our trend is what is college football. Relying on 12-14 play drives and converting multiple 3rd downs won't get it done. College football offense is about big plays, it's why the point production is up so much, not 6-7 minute sustained drives.

Completely agree. Unless, by "sustained drives" we are talking about ripping off multiple 10-15 yard chunks during each drive. The traditional sustained drive of 3-5 yard runs, 5-7 yard passes (with the occasional intermediate route) has never worked for us in recent memory. It seemed to be the basis for the confounding GRob game plan:

1)On offense, we will be a ball control, sustained drive machine...built for taking it the length of the field on long scoring drives.
2)On defense, we will play bend-but-don't-break, because teams simply can't sustain long drives regularly on college.

How he could buy into #2 (which is accurate), yet also believe #1(which is false) always blew my mind.

Chips make a game of it for Cuse:

1. Some What plays by our 2ndary burned for some big plays
2. The turnover bug emerges and takes a couple bites our of our offensive effort
3. Chips are prepared and ready for this one and are much better than last year.

SU 24
CMU 23

I guess what I'm saying is we need to string some first downs together. Can't go 3 and out for most of the game hoping to break one play.

We ended up with 15 first downs but the 3rd conversions were wretched and we even today's first series was 3 and out.
