Coach Search Options after Autry

Why do so many of our fans have this mentality that only Syracuse people can coach at Syracuse?
I don’t think it’s that they believe only SU people can coach. But, with ‘one of our own,’—

• Brand continuity
• Familiarity. The affinity/relationship has already been established, and it wouldn’t be like bringing in a mercenary. Consider how Boeheim’s Army always has us fans talking about how we prefer alums over outsiders and how we no longer feel connected to BA.
• Loyalty. With an alum, you get a better sense that this would be their dream job and their last stop/objective. With an outside hire, we’re a stepping stone.
• Money, probably.
• Identity. We want to believe that one of us can be successful.
• History. JB came from within, so that’s the path that is established in their minds.
• Fear of the unknown. Tribalism.
• GMac is still a fan favorite and doesn’t have any baggage or mystery—a known quantity.
• And more!

I don't mind that. He's an interesting option. Would make things easier if USF closes the regular season strong.
Not for nothing, but in his first year there Hodgson currently has an SRS of 11.18 (simple rating system*), which is the best in USF history.

*SRS is kind of like a simplified KP. It's a decent guideline for an apples-to-apples comparison relative to the average that season and what's good about it is that BBRef has all of that, so you don't have to pay for a subscription. It's not complex, so there is some variance, but Autry has not broken 11 and the last SU season at 11 or higher was 2020-21. And 13-14 is usually the floor for a tourney team.

Because that's the way it's been for ~50 years.

Familarity / comfort / fear of risk.

But now that the bottom has dropped out, I think the majority have come around to the reality that former ties to the program should be far down the list of evaluative criteria when seeking the next head coach, and not atop the list like it unfortunately was last time.

There’s been plenty of talk about Skinn throughout this thread. Consensus is he’s the 2nd best option behind Schertz. Honestly, I think he ends up as our next HC for a variety of factors.
Skinn would be a very good hire. I want Schertz first but if a job like Ohio State opens up, I would imagine there would be mutual interest between Schertz and OSU and I don’t think we could beat them out. But we shall see what happens

I know most here realize this, but this next hire is beyond important. I have seen a lot of the most dedicated Syracuse basketball fans checkout the last couple of years due to the state of the program. If we bring in someone that just continues the downfall of this once great program the consequences could be dire. This is one reason I wanted Autry gone after last years historically bad season. The more we kick the can down the road of no good expectations the easier it is to accept.

The fact that people allowed this to go to a third year signals management incompetence. Its such a mess right now.

We are a top ten team in total wins. We have the biggest Facility in ncaa basketball that will hold the most fans when we start winning.

No one will care about any of that.

How much are you going to pay me. What's my budget for a staff (not just assistant coaches), what's my budget from the $20.5M for players, what's the NIL looking like from the business or wealthy alum communities. If all those boxes are checked, then what do the facilities look like.

From what I know about schertz he’s not interested with Cuse like Cincinnati a lot. If he did somehow want Cuse he’s hopefully option 1. Option 2 for me would be Luke Murray at UConn, another offensive genius who helped UConn a lot.
Luke Murray would be my choice if we can't get a top tier HC. I think emulating the best program in the country would be beneficial.

Can't beat that logic!

A large chunk don’t realize it. We still have people wanting to hire Gerry or some other SU connection. The SU admin has shown for a decade straight they don’t realize it. I fully expect an uninspired hire both for AD and new HC.
