Coach Search Options after Autry

My $.02. I have been pro hiring from
outside the family since JB left. That said, I am unaware of any actual “candidate” (not pie in the sky Jay Wright types) who would move the needle with the rank and file local fans like Gerry will, especially with that inspired showing in the NCAA.
The first game in the Dome will be a huge crowd. Imagine the energy with the welcome video with highlights from the BET run, the BYU game, GTown game as a freshman, and of course the championship game. The place will be on fire.
While Melo is an SU hero, Gerry is a Syracuse icon.

That's kinda where I'm at.

Though I think we can go back to Gerry a few years from now if need be (and he's proving himself.)

Take this for what it’s worth from Siena side of things and some pieces I have kind of put together.

1- Siena is doing a lot behind the scenes to keep Gerry. That doesn’t mean they would be able to keep him from Syracuse obviously. But they are trying to put a package together to make him happy and content. May make it more expensive and/or more of a roadblock for Syracuse to get it done. Gerry is seen as being a cheaper option for Syracuse, so now if they have to up their bid, does he look like as good of an option?

2- Yes they will probably lose Doty, but if they can hold onto everyone else from this years roster, they are anticipating a special year next year. Could be a fantastic year to ‘Cash in’, with the anticipated openings.

3- he turned down BC and GT last week.

4- he has ankle replacement surgery scheduled very soon. Has been in a lot of pain the last couple weeks. This is a big time recovery and would deffinetly hurt his ability to hit the ground running at a new job. Would deffinetly hurt his ability to do what needs to be done in year 1 form any program.

5- he is a prideful guy, and as many have mentioned on here before, he was hurt that he was passed over the first time for Red. In addition, Siena is bending over backwards to keep him and make him happy. Meanwhile, he looks like Syracuse’s 3,4,5th option. That in a way kind of hurts too, do I want to go back to a place that turned me down already and then I’m a backup plan? Ultimately it’s easier to say no when the offer isn’t actually in front of you. But it can be a thought, kind of a slap in the face while your current school be-loves you.

6- Jim talking in the media and spewing his name for Syracuse isn’t really appreciated by Gerry. It’s more of a distraction and a nuisance. Albany is 2 hours away and Jim has not been to one Siena game to support Gerry.

7- Jim hates Nate Oats and it’s no secret apparently. Part of the reason that Hodgson was blackballed by Jim.
Great stuff. I think either way it's win win for us.

I have serious concerns about stringing Gmac along again like many others here, but money talks at the end of the day.

If we get Schertz and the NIL behind him he is the obvious choice.

If we get let's say 2, 3, 4 mil more for Gmac then we might need to ride the momentum with the hometown hero. Hope he can work his magic. And we give him a nice salary bump for waiting things out with the process.

Either way how many bullets have we dodged to get here. Hop, BH, 10 other lesser candidates. It's a good spot to be.

Unless he's said something else since 8pm last night, that is not what Trilly is saying
Understood. About 3 weeks back Trilly was quoted and posted (folks discussed in this thread) that Schertz had no interest which is why I brought it up.

I was so focused on Hodgson and Gerry (and thought Schertz was out) that I forgot Saint Louis is playing in Buffalo too. Easy to have an interview here.

I talked to a local in Rochester, and they said there are a lot cars heading down I-90 from the direction of Syracuse toward Buffalo. Could they be going down for a second interview?

Hard to be certain, but seems likely.

If GMAC was the guy for sure, I think we’d already know. Time is of the essence once you have your guy. The fact that there’s been no announcement in my mind, confirms there are other potentially preferable candidates out there.

Not to mention, I think Thamel would have said something.

FWIW Thamel was taped before the Duke - Siena game.

Jim should t have the power to blackball anyone. Thank you for this info.

Someone else pointed out earlier that 90% of the fanbase wants GMac and has no idea who Schertz is. I check this board several hours each day and had to Google to make sure I was spelling his name correctly. St. Louis is not a known commodity in college basketball. That shouldn't stop a potential hire, but there will need to be a good media plan in place if we can somehow get him here.
If you are a fan of college basketball, you know Schertz. If you are a syracuse-only fan, you might not know Schertz.

This would be an exciting hire for people that are huge fans of the sport, and the syracuse-onlys would get on board pretty quickly after we score 100 in our opening game this year.

I have it on pretty good authority that #7 is incorrect when it comes to Hodgson.

I am up. I don't expect I will hear any more than what I already did which wasn't all that much. As I said, I was told it was down to 2 coaches. One was Gerry. The other is the mystery man (isn't all that much mystery since his name has been out in this thread a whole bunch of times). Last night, a poster in this thread said he knew for a fact that the mystery man had already been interviewed last Weds. I had zero knowledge of that. That of course was before the Siena Duke game. And we also got Pete T's comments that back up that there are other discussions going on. That is all I know. And it was sort of fluky that I knew that because the info on the mystery man came from the other side. Not Syracuse. Hopefully we know more soon no matter who it turns out to be.
Hold on…the info came from “the other side”? You’re telling us that your source is a freaking medium? You went to a seance and a medium gave you this “information”?
