Coach Search Options after Autry

How is Gerry not the best option moving forward? Hes doing a great job at sienna, his pedigree as a player and winner, he connects with the alumni and donors, he’s young, understands the nil game. What am I missing here. Seems like a homerun hire for us

But he’s not new and shiny

I gotta ask… why is Hodgson supposedly in consideration at all? Is it because he’s a quasi-local guy? His teams so far would best be described as mid, maybe mid+. His Ark St. Sun Belt title year was… fine.

Anecdotally, he seems to enjoy running his mouth at other players/coach. Subjectively, he looks like a tool.

If this is the caliber of coach we’re going after, why not just stick the gun in our mouth, pull the trigger and switch to being a women’s hockey school?

Hodgson has been discussed at length in many threads. You can read through the countless threads if you want. He is way more qualified for this job than Gerry. Look at coaches being discussed for opening across the country, Hodgson's name gets dropped in those often not all the time but often, and Gerry has never been mentioned for any job. I understand the love for Gerry, but he isn't ready for a job like this.

The Syracuse Basketball job on the open market post Dome. Never has happened before. We truly have no idea on how this will really go. But if their is a real commitment to ensuring packed crowds night in and night out at the dome again as a main motivator in this hire, there is a small chance that they really go above and beyond what we are thinking is even possible. There is something unique about this building that can generate a lot of revenue that just isn't possible at most schools.

My post wasn’t about Gerry. I’m not comparing Hodgson to Gerry. I don’t think Gerry should be the hire.

I want to know what makes us think Hodgson is a) good b) the right fit.

As a realist, who understands we’re not going to land a household name, I would still be hard pressed to feel good about Hodgson as the next HC. His resume I guess isn’t entirely unimpressive but it’s certainly not impressive.

Hodgson has some positives but I have said before he will not be the best on the market but he will have things that make him attractive for Syracuse...

-He has already turned around two programs in a short amount of time
-USF was 13-19 last season and 14-8 already this season
-Won a regular-season conference championship, Arkansas State
-He is a passionate and loud coach (not for everyone here, clearly but is a change of pace needed or not TBD)
-Read that he improved USF NIL considerably (hope would be he can do the same here)
-He is a high-level, proven recruiter
-He is from the area
-He wants to coach here
-He plays a super-fast-paced offense
-USF currently top 10 scoring offense in college basketball
-He has a connection to one of Syracuse top donors who currently doesnt give to the basketball program
-Asst and lead recruiter under Oats
-Donnie lead recruiter at 'Bama (could matter probably not)

There are negatives as well

-Short track record
-Never made the tournament
-Passionate/Loud/Emotional - Some like and some dont So this is positive and negative (not going to over the comment as it lands here)
-In his fast pace system some nights look awful as it is 3s and dunks and if 3s aren't falling blah but usually it evens out and has to if they average 90 a game
-Playing at that pace we are going to give up a ton of points so people who like defense wont like him

I want Schertz, but I could make an argument that Hodgson isn't that much more qualified than G-Mac. Gerry is definitely much more qualified now that Red was when he got the job, but I know that's not saying much.

Check the records of the schools he’s coached at before he got there.

If we get Shertz on campus I would make sure he saw some video of the domes last sellout so he can get a reminder of what a enthusiastic fanbase sounds and looks like for a hoops game up here in Syracuse. Say what you want we are not that far removed from some filled up dome games that it should give a guy like Schertz some visions of him being in front of those crowds. Maybe not a top 3 criteria BUT a full dome cheering is a selling point.

Thank you. Genuinely.

He’s not my cup of tea.

Pretty eye-opening to see how easily a small group of posters with delicate sensibilities and third-hand info poisoned the well on Hodgson.

I'll enjoy watching that group squirm if he's hired.

Setting aside the immaturity and arguably character-revealing nature of what he said to Red’s son (truly an insane thing to say), his program ‘turnarounds’ just don’t look as impressive to me as I think they’re being portrayed.

I’m obviously not watching his games and not plugged into his recruiting and NIL. I’ll trust that those are his strengths.

He won the regular season Sun Belt with Ark St. That’s of course not bad. But it looks like 1 game separated the winner of the conference from 5th or 6th? Winning your conference is good, but that doesn’t exactly jump off the page as ‘oh dang, snatch up this rising talent now.’

USF is okay this year; better than last year. That’s good. It looks like they have a couple good wins and some really bad losses. I know records don’t exist in a vacuum and circumstances matter, but dude is going to have double digit losses in each of his first three seasons and probably, barring a late run by USF, no tournament appearances.

I like offense as much as the next guy. I don’t like the idea of a play style that is so seemingly dependent on hitting shots that you could take out a top 10 team one night but lose to a bottom 10 team the next. Doesn’t seem sustainable.

Well said. Schertz is #1 on my wishlist, for most of these reasons. I think his system is better, he's more experienced, and his approach to running a program will scale well given additional resources... which despite what some of the CNY gloom crew say, would be provided and then some at SU.

red isn’t my cup of tea. Give me the meathead idc, I’m looking for a winning coach with personality and passion

Well, Red isn’t anybody’s cup of tea lol.

I’m happy to leave the ‘personality and passion’ stuff to reality tv where it belongs. I’m more worried about winning.
