Coach Search Options after Autry

I’m all about Schertz and won’t give up on us making a play for him. I’ve wanted him since last season. And Hodgson has always been near the top of my list, even if he’s kind of a meathead. However, there’s some good analysis of other potential names in these rundowns. Takayo Siddle could be a great hire.

Obviously Jerrod Calhoun, Tony Skinn, Travis Steele and John Groce will also be hot names. And I like the offensive maestros like Eric Henderson at Drake (formerly Sourh Dakota State), Chris Gerlufsen at SF (Todd Golden cohort), Alan Huss at Creighton (was head coach at High Point), and the Earl brothers. People also seem very high on Brian Wardle.

In that first article there is an interesting name and that's Chris Mack. Obviously, got fired from Louisville for the Dino Gaudio stuff, but got hired at Charleston and seems to be doing well there. Knowing Syracuse, he would probably fall outside the safe zone, but the guy is a winner.

Chris Mack is my outside the box guy.

.
Maybe a few years early but seems like Phil Martelli Jr is on track to put himself in the window for power conference jobs.
Yeah, he’s another one they should look at if they can’t make Schertz happen. I want a proven guy with an innovative, modern offensive system (like Schertz). I don’t know if Martelli has that, so I’ll need to take a deeper look.

It's been news in paid groups for weeks now, Trilly first and now others here backing it up. That's affiliated and non-affiliated sources saying the same. Sorry if you don't trust his info, but he's most often correct. We have a tendency to ignore the writing on the wall because we don't like the outcome.
I just don’t trust him. His sources are agents (not necessarily of the coach in question) with their own agendas and ideas.

Disappointing to hear that Schertz is basically out and Hodgson isn't getting much of a look. There's going to be a constant swirl of rumors, so whatevs.

Overall though, I was hoping to be much further along in this process by now considering that they could reasonably have fired Autry last year. It's not like the coach search was unlikely to happen this year. But I'll try to be patient.

While I don’t doubt JeremyCuse I will say that I’m sure there is a lot of misdirection during this process. No inside information, My guess is we have 3-4 people lined up that we want to interview when the time is right. I would also think that hop and Gmac will get a look.

“We want to be unpredictable off the ball. Then in the pick and roll, we want to be really efficient. So, we do a lot of different read drills . . We want our guys to understand every single pick and roll coverage, not only in the pick and roll with the two players, but the other three guys, to me are just as important . . and it’s really about understanding that possession, what we’re trying to do, and how we’re attacking that coverage.”

“We study cutting, what kind of impact cutting can have . . and screening. To me, screening and cutting are the two of the biggest keys in basketball . . these are things that we try to do within our offensive system. And I think that’s made us an elite offensive team.”

- Jerrod Calhoun

Jerrod Calhoun is primarily known as an offensive-minded coach, recognized for building high-scoring, efficient, and fast-paced teams, particularly through advanced ball-screen offenses. He emphasizes transition offense, "Swap" offense with, multiple cuts/screens, and has a reputation for developing elite offensive programs

So I found this --- "Number one, it shows great commitment by Utah State to be in the top four in coach's salary, not only for the Mountain West, but moving forward in the new Pac-12," Calhoun said. "Then I think the other thing is you look at the buyout. The buyout is $5 million in year one, it's 4 million in year two. I'm not even sure after that. So that to me is reassurance."

I would think with a 4 or 5 million dollar buyout I think Syracuse would be out of the running...

Seems like another great offensive minded coach that we will not be in the market for...

Schertz, Olen, and now Calhoun are all a no go... Hmmmmmm blah

Really concerning hearing that “this guy is going to demand too much” or “this buyout may be too much”

If that is the case. Just tell the fan base we can no longer compete in the new college basketball landscape.

I’m sick and tired of this school crying poor as they buy up business after business and have a consistently growing real estate portfolio.

I agree, I am just being a realist about things that just doesn't seem like our style.

So is it a given Red is out by March? I think it is.

I remember last year the three main prevailing reasons floated on this board why Red needs a third year are:

(1) Canning Red means paying this buyout. I don't know the terms of his contract but someone here said 3 years some said 5 years. Really he has a buyout? I don't even understand why.
(2) If Red goes so will Kiyan and the tens of millions Melo and Lala may bring to the program.
(3) The lack of NIL resulted in a weak roster and Red never had a chance to coach good talent. At least this last one leaves no doubt in my mind.

Does Red have a buyout if terminated after this season?

How will cuse navigate finding a new coach and trying to keep Kiyan (or not)?

Hiring Hop or Gmac would be the final nail in the coffin for this program.

My wishlist of traits:

+ RECENT success coaching in big games (last 2 seasons)
+ Knows how to communicate effectively - With players, staff, AD and donors
+ Confident, but willing to acknowledge shortcomings AND take steps to address them, not just pay lip service.
+ Adaptable to changes within college athletics, doesn't push back against them
+ Doesn't get too high or too low
+ Gives players what they need to be successful - Not just coaching but also training/conditioning and nutrition

FYI, Cuse should already navigating finding a new coach. Nobody waits until coaches are already fired anymore especially if you know you are going to let your coach go. Indiana had their hire locked up well before March (it has been rumored). Back channel talks have been going on if not then we will be way behind the game.
