Coach Search Options after Autry

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This is our Dan Hurley in so many different ways….this chance rarely comes around.

Anyone other than Hodgson is a complete failure … even Schertz
Schertz is 27-3 this year vs Hodgson 22-8 in a weaker conference. Schertz also had a 83% winning percentage at Lincoln Memorial and a 32 win season at Indiana State. Hodgson is very good, but there's a reason most consider Schertz the top guy on the market

I think anybody would be happy with either. Fwiw, I think the AAC has been the better conference in the last 5 years or so. But, it’s definitely debatable.

Hodgson has upstate new york ties which is exciting and is younger with more room to grow as a coach.

Style has been proven to be effective at power five level (Nate Oats) and I feel through my research that Hodgson has that unteachable swagger. Seems to use NIL/Transfer portal/modern analytics to his advantage.

Again, not points to compare to Schertz or say that they make him a better candidate. Just explaining the reasoning for the significant buzz around him.

JW is/was not as lame duck as many are making it seem on here.

Yes he retiring. Yes there obviously was some drama but there are absolutely some inaccuracies being reported in this group.
By definition he’s a “lame duck.” Now since we’re naming an AD Monday it doesn’t matter as much since they’ll be working while JW advises but the label isn’t technically wrong as of right now

Think Hodgson is the play. But this is going to sound a little crazy and not saying he ends up here. But I bet Oats’ agent gets a call from our New AD and Chancellor
We aren’t taking anyone from an SEC/Big10/Notre Dame School that they actually want.

They certainly push the ball and shoot threes. Their defense leaves a lot to be desired. They play hard, but not great defense.
Not sure if that was the first game you’ve watched them, but they are first in defensive fg% in the American and second in rebounding. Memphis played solid at home and made a lot of tough mid range 2’s. That happens sometimes, but I’ll take my chances.

I’ve seen them play several games. Like I said, they play hard but not always great defense.

Enis would be a nice player to have come along with Hodgson. Elite 3 point shooter, good with the ball in his hands (purely a 2 guard). Good defender albeit a little undersized. Doesn’t mean he has to play 35 minutes, but would be a nice start to filling out a competitive roster.

Per Kenpom, too 60 defense nationally and 2nd in the AAC by 3 tenths of a point per 100 possessions and they're the 78th most consistent team per Haslametrics. Highest ranked defense USF has ever had in the Kenpom era.

When you play high tempo there is going to be more stretches of "bad" defense just because there's more opportunities to do so. Not saying you are doing this but I think some people have gotten confused by the tempo aspect and raw per game numbers rather than tempo adjusted stuff.

Thank you, was too lazy to look it up. People here see opposing ppg and get bent out of shape.

As someone who agrees with that poster I’ll take a stab.

He’s an elite recruiter and has raised NIL at both locations he’s been at. His teams play hard every possession which includes an emphasis on rebounding(novel) concept. His teams push the pace and rely entirely on shots at the rim or 3’s.

He’s not stuck to one defense and will mix man or zone depending on matchups. Teams struggle to score inside against his teams as they do a great job cutting off dribble penetration and are very physical on the ball. The only negative is he hasn’t done this at a power conference level, but it’s the same system Oats runs with what I would argue more emphasis on defense.
Alabama's defense is blah and seem like they hardly play any. They are more concerned about jacking up 3's on the offensive end.

Agree. I really don't think people should get so hyped on the metrics for BH anyway.

Just gotta watch the trends. He's getting every program better overall he goes to and it's multiple schools now. He checks alot of other boxes but imo I could care less about the how he does it as long as he gets his guys to show up and win.

It's very likely that what he did and how he won at ArkSt and USF will not translate the same way to the ACC anyway.

When he gets a big NIL bank to play with (hopefully) and pulls top tier talent out of the portal they may not be suited to run the same offense or defense he was running at past stops.

What makes these younger new coaches the top candidates is that they know every year is a new year and they are adapting quickly. He'll know what system he wants to run and will try to get that type of player in the portal. Maybe it doesn't play out perfectly though at which point he'll need to change things up on Off and Def.

We all saw Autry fail for 3 years because he couldn't adapt.

You have to watch the rotations and the help defense. Also they play the percentages and because of how they speed you up the analytics will show the shots they give up are a lower percentage when you play at a certain tempo. I’ve watched about 10 games and you will rarely find many easy looks in succession and on nearly every made basket they are putting pressure on your defense immediately pushing the other direction.

With a team that plays that tempo it might look like they are giving up too many good looks but in reality they aren’t. Alabama does the same thing where they get 4 buckets and you get 1 or 2 and it’s all within less than a minute.

It’s a similar system but Hodgson doesn’t run it exactly the same as Nate does. Also there is something to be said for not going too crazy trying to bring in UK level classes every year and finding the gritty guys to go with the talent. Hodgson being at Ark St and now USF can apply that and find the right mix.

Probably will get slammed for this by some, but I think Oats has plateaued a bit. They’ve definitely underachieved this year.

Was kind of getting at it in previous post but he’s gotten complacent relying on talent vs being aggressive on finding the best mix of toughness and talent. To be fair even with all the resources there, Oats looks like he aged 20 yrs since he started at Bama. Cost of the job in this crazy world at the P4 level. Another reason why finding a younger guy on the rise in BH is a perk in this madness.

He’s a bit greasy too.

Didn’t know where else to put this, but we thought JAB was the king of this:
