Coach Search Options after Autry

I dont think there is a possible way that if BH is our 1st choice, he ends up at Providence. He has been after this job for 2 years. I can be wrong of course but that makes zero logical sense. At worst this Providence chatter is to make sure he gets what he wants or close to it.

That's my read on it as well but I leave open the possibility that Providence tries to go all in and shoot for the stars. Again I think the former is accurate but in today's world you can't rule anything out.

They keep running deficits and get subsidized by the state.

In our case, we're getting "subsidized" by the general fund now but that's all dependent on how things are accounted for with scholarships, shared expenses, etc. There are smarter finances folks on here than me but you can make the accounting look good or bad depending on your goals.

It's my specialty. You have to get me a job in the finance department of that athletic department! (but I need to work from home in Virginia).

wonder if there are enough JB loyalists (on the BoT, as boosters, etc) and JB himself, so adamantly anti-Oats and therefor anti-Hodgson (coupled with fervent KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY dogma) to be part of the calculus

I think if Hodgson goes to Providence that means Syracuse picked GMac and there are going to be problems up on the Hill. People higher up than on this message board will have to answer a ton of questions.

That’s what I was referring to

Lots of people are going to look stupid if all of this ends up checking out. Why be so negative? If its wrong its wrong, no need to just blast someone for posting info they heard
So if Bh ends up at Syracuse, that guy is just wrong. But if he ends up at P.C.. the people that thought he would end up at Syracuse are going to look stupid. See anything contradictory in that thinking? Until it actually happens, no one knows for sure who is going to end up where. I haven't seen anyone saying the BH is 100% ending up at Syracuse. I will say I think he at this time our first choice and I would bet Syracuse is his first choice. But I don't think any of us saw Blair as the new A.D.. Would you rather those of us that get information not to share it because if we are wrong, we will look "stupid? Silly

Jim needs to watch the Godfather scene where Tessio has been caught betraying Michael Corleone and calmly accepts his fate and gets into the car.

JB: please get in your car, drive back to your Skaneateles lake house and never return to the airwaves.

Goes in line with what was said early on from the people on this board. He wasn't all that interested in us and is going to bet on himself for a bigger job next cycle.
I said this about 3 months ago as well. SLU has two HUGE donors.

What’d I say last night?

Would LOVE to land their point guard [Tillery]. Weren't we linked to Krissa at one point, too?
yes i believe we were involved with tillery unless it was just people wanting us to be. but his name is very familiar.

Takeaways, what's changed from the beginning of this week. GMAC winning the MAAC. But really the major change is Providence officially losing out on Schertz. Providence has eyes all of sudden on Hodgson. Syracuse needs to be in the Providence ball park to get the deal done. Syracuse should be on entirely new level from Providence if the top boosters unite together.

We were, kind of.

City Rocks guy, and we haven't always had the best luck there. We targeted other point guards, and weren't actively chasing Tillery, which was weird given that he was an in-state guy with lots of national offers.

Then from what I understand, we missed on a couple of higher rated guys, and Red went back to the Tillery family trying to get back in with them late. We brought them on campus, and from what I understand made an NIL offer that the family considered "insulting," so they quickly dropped Syracuse.

Between not keying on him earlier, and then dropping the ball when we needed to land a good PG, it wasn't a good situation.

Maybe he'd fit here now [depending on who the new coach is].

Whether or not Hodgson is our first choice - what happens if Providence (or any other school for that matter) pays more than SU can offer, or guarantees a longer contract term, or a more favorable buyout clause… and on the NIL side, what if Providence (or mystery School X) comes up with twice or three times the NIL money that SU can commit to? Do you think Hodgson won’t go for the better package, if there’s one that’s out there?

It’s pretty easy to come up with a logical scenario where we don’t end up with Hodgson for a variety of reasons.

I’ll say again. With a new Chancellor and AD we have some extra cards up our sleeves now.

What BH, gmac, and the handful of other candidates and their agents thought they knew 2 weeks is no longer a sure thing.

BB in particular was a surprise and may throw some folks for a loop when they have their next conversation.

I think BH’s agent knows what he’s doing and has the sense to know the way to get the best deal is to come into the Syracuse interview with multiple offers. Same with his competition mainly gmac who is sitting with multiple offers as well from BC and GT.

I'm OK with hiring a coach other than Hodgson provided that it is on merit. What won't be cool is not hiring Hodgson because Gmac won a MAAC tourney game over a team that beat his a couple of weeks previously causing people lose their minds with nostalgia and taking a third bite at the Boeheim apple.

But there really isn’t — and shouldn’t be — a comparison here.

Now, if Providence were offering something like $8 million a year to coach and a $20 million NIL budget, then that’s a different conversation. But that isn’t reality.

If the packages are even remotely close, he’s not choosing Providence over Syracuse. Say Providence can put together $12 million in NIL, and Syracuse has $11 million. He’s not going to pick Providence in that situation, especially when he’s been pursuing the Syracuse job for two years. That just isn’t logical.

For Providence to actually win that battle, the package would have to be so far beyond Syracuse’s that it changes the equation entirely. And if Providence truly had that kind of financial package available, they could probably attract a bigger and more established name than Hodgson anyway.

On top of that, Syracuse is a Power 4 program in the ACC and one of the top basketball programs of all-time despite recent history, and Providence simply isn’t operating in that same tier
