Coach Search Options after Autry

No no… the public articles said he reached an extension with SLU. Not an agreement in principle. That implies he gave his word and it’s a bunch of reputable news sources who reported it and he never denied it. He backs out now and he’s going back on his word. If he did it to slu why wouldn’t he do it to us in the future. Again, to be clear I don’t think schertz is the mystery guy because of this… but if he was then I don’t want him.
Agreed. IF it is him, retradiing a deal is a pretty bad look.

That was his PR man Dook Vitale.
Pretty sure a board insider confirmed Hurley was getting an interview he had heard. Might have been Jake a 110 pages ago and his "here's my final update " post if I recall correctly.

I'm gonna guess that whatever the NIL bag got upgraded to for GMAC... that word on it hit the streets with multiple agents and it peaked a lot of new interest from other candidates... Maybe Schertz agent included...

Now whether that money is still there for other candidates (besides GMAC) is the real question. May not be.

I could be 100% wrong about this... just guessing, but something stirred up the interest and money talks.
Or the agent noise was always wrong and Syracuse hasn’t been leaking information.

Syracuse is a better job than some folks on this board think it is.

Give the admin credit (so far). Look professional. Above the fray. PC for one, and maybe it isn't their fault and just the agent's, but looks desperate to prove their worth.

I've said it and will say it again. For coaches of a certain age, which pretty much everyone in our target market it, SU is a premier brand with an unmatched facility. A coach worth his salt sees that as extremely, extremely attractive with no more than a handful of other jobs being able to match. All subject to sufficient funding of course.

I think JW's professionalism comes through here. He is a long time successful exec and knows as well as anyone the value of SU BB. This isn't football. We can be a selector. And I think he expects us to be. And he has laid that foundation for Blair to capitalize on. Collaborative effort.

This is getting to "you must never question your government" levels of policing. Wrong info has a chain effect that spills into social media and then overall media narratives resulting in a constant negative feedback loop. As long as that continues I will comment publicly on it.
It’s not wrong info. They are not journalists. There is no second source necessary. Board insider has a connection, call him friend A. Friend A has interesting information they share with board insider: “XYZ is happening”. Board insider, understanding that inquiring minds want to know, shares said information with fellow SU crazies.
Subject recruit (player/coach) changes mind, gets better offer, etc., and things go a different direction. Board member wasn’t wrong when he shared. Things changed.
I used to have an indirect link to the attorney for the SU student body. He dealt with coaches and players a lot. This was pre-message boards. About 50% of things never came true.
Example: I could have told you about 2 days before the signing period that Marcus Liberty was coming to Syracuse. It was true, until Illinois swooped in and took care of Marcus and his family. That is 2nd hand from the coaching staff.
If you don’t understand that people are offering their best information, in real time, but things change, then you should either grow up, or leave fan message boards altogether.

My brother and our best highschool buddy want Gerry. I told them about Hodg a few days ago... They had no idea who he was... Mentioned Schertz, TJO, and Byington to them today... They're like "Who??"

A lot of casual Cuse fans know nothing outside their own orbit, especially on coaches... So not surprising.

Bring someone in that can bring in players and start winning, and they'll all be on board fast. Winning solves a lot
That's my thought too. This fan board is not the general fan. The average Joe will be shocked if it's someone other than Gerry.

Well yeah, but the discussion here earlier this week was we were scraping couch cushions for NIL.

The Big 2 factors to me are Compensation and NIL. And there is still some uncertainty on what we can do with those factors.

People have often pushed "BRAND" as a major factor as well. Unfortunately, from my view
a) "Brand" has been lessened in importance in the NIL era.
b) And even it were important, our "Brand" has taken good sized knocks the past 5 and past 10 years.

I guess we will see, and hope I'm wrong. I've ready maybe 50 pages of this thread over various points, so there is things I miss.
You need to catch up. Apparently we aren’t poor anymore.

Curious what Power 5 coaches would be interested. My inclination is it would be someone like Buzz Williams who’s clearly on the downside of his career. Maryland would probably pay us to take him off our hands.

Obviously TJ or Byington would be the home run guys.

None of the ACC coaches interest me

you can still be trying to raise more for NIL and be a better job. What's lost in the NIL chat is trying to have the funds to fund a roster in the upper echeleon of college ball. We have no issues being Georgia Tech or Wake Forest. The discussion centers on making sure we're in the top part of the ACC and nationally.

A lot of that is because of some structural problems in how we go about NIL (IMO) and because we didn't have a bball collective in place. And because results have been bad. Donors and businesses don't want to back losers.

Money may be tied to a candidate but the real fundraising occurs after the hire is announced for the portal funds (at least it does for SU). Hopefully we build a stable base that's not tied to one off season but that's the reality because the on court results have been bad. This community is dying for a winner. The passion and desire is here. I think people forget that sometimes - I travel a lot for work and very few basketball cities have what we have. We're the only game that matters. The community pride is real.

I think we hire one of the top candidates out there and the money will follow. It's just tough because Gerry is the most beloved player of the past 25 years. It also doesn't hurt that he's a blue collar kid from PA who looks like our average fan. Undersized, scrappy, overlooked. Not saying that makes him the best candidate but it is why a lot of money is behind him.

I agree with everything you’ve stated, however the JB media tours and Goodman mouthpiecing for Hodg earlier this week made us look like a Mickey Mouse operation.

oh i agree. JB is not helping things and a lot of folks are complaining about what he is saying within the school too. But JB gonna JB. He's part of the CNY mentality that hurts us at times.

That narrative likely doesn’t go away unless we hire the mystery candidate and then it’s egg on their face as logically it wouldnt make sense
