Coach Search Options after Autry

If GMAC was the guy for sure, I think we’d already know. Time is of the essence once you have your guy. The fact that there’s been no announcement in my mind, confirms there are other potentially preferable candidates out there.

Not to mention, I think Thamel would have said something.

What percent that Cuse is waiting until Monday for a slower CBB news day and not getting lost in a day of a full slate of games. Or it doesn't matter?

Was in Buffalo last night… Schertz offense was the best I’ve ever seen in person. They were so impressive. Be curious to see how it holds up against a bigger Michigan team tomorrow.
Schertz is an offensive maestro as a coach. Gmac doesn’t have anywhere near his proven experience (at multiple programs!) or his offensive acumen.

Big next two days especially if certain teams lose.

It would be funny if it's Schertz because that Trilly guy said he had it on good authority that Schertz had no interest at all for Syracuse. If it's Schertz than it sounds like Trilly is no different than Goodman.
yea but, that was a point in time. he may not have had any interest then. something may have changed his mind.

My take is that Gerry has the job and AD (no more nickname policy in effect) is doing the perfunctory duty of interviewing others or checking on others even if they aren’t available. Dasher I’m sure is right but I think the die is cast.

If you want to start on the wrong foot don’t hire the hottest coach in the country who happens to be a local legend. Mac is the anathema for local malaise. He may not excite the nerds on here but we are a loud basement minority

School needs a national interest enema.

Get ready for Gerry
Gerry’s the hottest coach in the country? Are we talking looks or ability to coach or sought after?

Even if GMAC was the guy, I imagine the negotiations take time as far as salary for himself and staff and amount of NIL.
And who is to say they might be dragging it out a bit to see just how much more NIL they could get if GMAC is the coach.
The average casual fan wants GMAC. He is remembered as a winner and we are sick of being losers and the joke of the ACC for the last 5 years or so.
Anyone who watched that Duke game had to be impressed. And more people nationwide probably watch part of the first two days of the NCAAT than practically any other time of the year.
Given GMACs history as a player and winner, how he turned Siena around as a coach from 4 wins to 23 wins in just 2 years, took Siena to their first NCAAT since 2010 and then led the number one team in the country up till the last 4 minutes on CBS, I can see why many who have not even considered donating to NIL would be opening up their wallets.
The SU marketing plan for the basketball team would pretty much write itself.

Hope is a powerful thing that we have not had for so many years.
GMAC gives the casual fan hope and gives many of the die hard fans hope.
Yes, if you go just by metrics, he is not the best candidate out there.
But heart, belief in yourself and your team and proving you believe you can always win, mean a lot too.
GMAC is the embodiment of the self fulfilling prophecy. He believes that he can win and often he does even in the most difficult of circumstances. BE tournament as a senior and the Duke game show that in spades.

My $.02. I have been pro hiring from
outside the family since JB left. That said, I am unaware of any actual “candidate” (not pie in the sky Jay Wright types) who would move the needle with the rank and file local fans like Gerry will, especially with that inspired showing in the NCAA.
The first game in the Dome will be a huge crowd. Imagine the energy with the welcome video with highlights from the BET run, the BYU game, GTown game as a freshman, and of course the championship game. The place will be on fire.
While Melo is an SU hero, Gerry is a Syracuse icon.

Literally everyone watched him stare down Duke. Yeah he’s the name du jour

He already had legend status this just added to it. Not sure why we don’t like to acknowledge this. It’s intellectually acceptable to be ok w the thing closest to home

Maybe, but I’d almost rather announce it this morning and get it all over the pregame shows with a ton of eyes on it.
Sat am is a terrible time to drop this.

Sunday pm
Would be much better. If PR matters here someone said Gmac is going for surgery this week. No idea if true but may delay or speed things up

I got a few tidbits back in February from someone close to the AD. They were stubbornly insistent that money was not a problem and that SU would pay up for a good coach, as long as there wasn't some insane bidding war with a B1G or $EC school. That was for staff salary; they were also confident we'd put together a good NIL package based on what they assembled last year for Red. Also adamant that there was interest from the top mid-major coaches as well as some P5. Glad to see much of that vindicated.

I think certain people are just programmed to cry poverty and act like we are Seton Hall in terms of funding. It's bogus. The locals especially seem to underestimate the impact of Syracuse on the national stage.

Watching four games in Tampa yesterday, it is amazing the offensive sets that Cuse has been missing for the longest time. Pick and rolls, crisp passing to find the open man, guys cutting and then receiving properly thrown passes to attack the paint downhill, having centers that actually get the ball thrown to them in the paint, many ten to 12 footers when the open spot is found, guys crashing the boards for offensive rebounds and then sprinting down court on defense, guys not standing around not contributing.

ISO offense is so stale. When an offense is run properly it's like a ballet. Maestro is the proper term for the guy who's in charge.

well, if SU is a contractual out, why not sign it?
The rank and file know more than you give them credit for. They all love Gmac. But they also just saw a Syracuse guy, one of JB’s longtime assistant coaches, fail at the job in spectacular fashion. I think many of them are very skeptical about another inside the family hire.

My biggest question in all of this is whether the leadership (Both ADs, the BoT, and the Chancellor) have the courage to make the correct basketball hire, even if it goes against what a large portion of the alumni base and casual fans want.
I think this is the wrong question. They can make the correct basketball offer, but that doesn't mean the person will accept. Can they then pivot in way that is in the best interest of the program, and still build the strong relationships needed for significant, sustained NIL funding?

Especially as it’s closer to the Duke game his name will shine brighter. It dulls the further we get away from that

If you took blind resume 37-30 with 8th & 3rd place finish and 1 MAAC championship would he be on your list? I love Gerry - all time favorite player & Duke game was excellent showing but your selling nostalgia not the best coach available imo.
But I’m not arguing that Gerry should be the next coach. I just don’t like the way some people want to downplay his accomplishments in order to lift up another choice. I think you present a totally reasonable argument without knocking him at all. I wish others could do the same.

CNY mentality is rampant here.
