Coach Search Options after Autry

They are not and never have been true fans. True fans don’t crap on the school just because they are not happy with the schools choice, their process to making that choice, or their guy didn’t get picked With that I agree, don’t let the door hit you.

This is why I’m upset. We didn’t even get a concrete bit of info that we tried to make a bigger search and have other viable options for the job.

There’s been plenty of info that indicates we did a large search with multiple candidates. I still think Syracuse, in its current state, has budgetary constraints. They weren’t willing to offer a 5 year, $20million guaranteed contract plus $10-$12m in guaranteed NIL the outside coaches were demanding.

GMac is obviously a candidate we can afford. They’re hoping he can deliver results and build the NIL commitments up based on the on court results he hopefully delivers.

If Syracuse had unlimited resources you would have seen a different hire. They don’t, so they have to go with the hire within their budget range and develop a plan to raise additional NIL so we can get the program back to a competitive level. This won’t be a return to the glory years with a one year turnaround. It will take a couple of years to right the ship.

Honestly the contract is almost irrelevant. If Gerry is bad we are screwed as a program for a multitude of reasons, the next coach won’t even matter it would be too late at that point. If Gmac is good he’ll be here for life lol

5 years is the standard deal for most coaches these days. Almost no one will sign something less. Also protects the school. If Gerry (or whoever comes) is a success, you got him locked in at a good deal. There is the flip side of that as well. But I can’t imagine the buyout would be astronomical.

Was thinking this when someone mentioned the other day that we haven't had a quick guard like High Point in forever. Mintz was one of the best we've had in terms of getting downhill. Defense was putrid both of those seasons though and we basically didn't attempt 3 pointers. PGs like Judah are basically a pre-requisite for having success with the isolation/high ball screen type offensive sets that we've run in recent years but it can only be so effective when the defense have 3 help defenders camped inside the paint waiting for you.

Great player and scorer. Not a plus athlete or the guy that’s repeatedly pushing the pace

GMac is my favorite athlete ever. I have no memory of the natty but 6 year old UpstateSM fell in love with 'Cuse and basketball in general because of Gerry and the BET run. I would stay after Stan Evans practice and do the Cincy runner over and over again.

I will be at every home game and rooting for him like hell but we had a chance to get out of the stone ages and, for whatever reason(s), declined or were unable to do so. If Mount St Mary's could make a layup in AC two weeks ago this isn't even a conversation. I am not going to pretend to agree with the process, the politics or the hire because of nostalgia or unquantifiable chit that people say about white point guards.

I want nothing more than for this to work but it is impossible for me to overlook what I perceive to be the shortcomings of this process/hire.

Man. Love JB for all he did for the program and Syracuse. But when your time is up. You really gotta walk man. You are tearing down what you built. And killing his legacy. Really hope Gmac kills it so that’s not the case. Still think Gmac can have success here. Just a really safe/lazy hire. Where I think we legit could have got 1-2 better candidates than him if our admin had their act together. This is more on the admin/boosters just being a cluster. Embarrassing

We got the right guy. After the disaster that was Autry. Wildhack or BoT fd us for 5 years w such an incompetent hire post boeheim. Anyone w a brain knew Autry was wayyy over his head in year 2….

I really hope GMac is successful for his own sake. Learning about spinal surgery and now ankle replacement surgery in this thread and he’s only in his 40’s?

The stress levels of this job are going to be through the roof. I’m a little concerned he’ll give it everything he has to right the ship even at the expense of his own health.
