coach speak

He can be as negative as he wants to be, imo, as long as the team wins. All these statements of so called facts reminds me of a poster from the Rivals site.

i am not over analyzing anything---simply drawing the parallel to his public demeanor and it is STRIKINGLY the same as it was during the second half of the season. people finally admitted that he had player issues last year and team cohesion issues----which many of us predicted before it became fashionable. the guy needs to lighten up---i want him to succeed ---as i believe he has great character, much as p did,and is a great rep for the university and new york state

Just expressing an opinion that it is possible that you are putting way too much emphasis on public demeanor and the correlation of that demeanor to what is really going on behind closed doors. I am assuming that you do not have the keys to those doors.

Nor do I, and that is the point.

Your theory about what happened to the team is certainly plausible. I don't think many here are disputing that what you are suggesting (you are, after all, guessing) could possibly have had something to do with what went down last year.

I am guessing that DM's public persona played only a small role. I am also guessing that it was much more complicated than what you are suggesting.

much like the tip of an iceburg?

Based on some posters impression of the impact of positive and negative coaching attitudes in press conferences and on the field; Bill Belichick would be a bad coach and Rex Ryan would have multiple Super Bowl wins.

And GRob would have us playing for our 3rd straight NC.

It could very well be a case of Marrone's expectations being that much higher. I don't think the fact that he said we must get better means anything. Maybe we have the talent to be a 9 win team and he is shooting for 12 wins and thinks we must get better to reach that. What coach doesn't say we aren't ready and we must get better? I'll reserve judgement until the first game. I think we are a 6 win club based on the difficulty of our OOC schedule but will be a much more solid team.

O is struggling because I honestly thnk they are trying some new wrinkles trying to find the right parts and pieces to produce some bigger plays, more yards, more points. The staff is fully aware of the problems and limitations. I will say this Nassib is Nassib, I would not expect miracles

I'm sure the O is also struggling because of all the parts they have been missing. Can't go most of camp without your best tackle, best WR for most of it, lose other parts here and there, and expect a lot of cohesion.

I think Saturday is going to be spotty. But hopefully we catch NW defense missing some assignments too, and some of the athletes like Broyld, can just outrun them all on a play or two. I wouldn't expect anything close to a fully functioning offense next week. Might not have had that if everyone was healthy the whole time, certainly not in the absence of key players.

Could Marrone's comments be more indicative of a young team experiencing growing pains rather than a potentially horrific season?

Our athleticism and talent level top to bottom is the best it has been in the last decade (that is not saying a lot). The issue with that is a lot of that talent is young and inexperienced. Mental mistakes will tend to have at a greater rate with younger kids than someone who has been in the program for 3 to 4 years. They also tend to get fatigued a bit, wear down a bit as camp goes on. What is happening here is completely normal and part of the sport (including injuries, which happen to EVERY program.)

If I were to make an educated guess, Marrone is also sending his young team a motivational message that there is still work to be done.

Until guys start making plays on offense I expect Marrone to be somewhat cautious in pressers, and then after guys start making plays he'll remain cautious but no one will notice. He and the staff are doing everything they can think of right now to prepare the team for the beginning of the season, and then guys need to make plays. Having said that, I expect Marrone's energy and enthusiasm to increase before NW.

If he says they are good and fails he would receive alot more criticism then if he says they are not good and fail.
Especially considering how the recruiting has been going good for 2-3 years down the line.

I'll take guarded comments and drab coach-speak in the interviews if we get better on the field and start posting consistent W's.

Lastly, we had a cheerleader coach. He oversaw the worst era in SU football history. I don't want to hear about the snowball catching fire anymore... about the seeing great "want-to..." in practice...

We'll know soon where this team is heading after the first game.

Until then, lighten up, Frances.

By not saying it, you're ok seeing "flashes"? :)

Anyone who is expecting anything more than a 5-7 to 7-5 season, not counting any bowl game, is going to be sorely disappointed.

You really should look at it like this - if you were forced to bet your house on being within +-1 win of SU's performance this year, then that's how you form your outlook. I HIGHLY doubt anyone betting their house would pick 9 or 10 wins.

Since DM and I are friends on facebook I'm sure he knows I bought tix to the NW game and I'm sure he also knows the teams W - L record when I attend games; he is just assuming SU loses as a result.

I hope that is true and it could be but I think we've been saying that every year and it's never been true.

And that has nothing to do with our defense being great.

44cuse

You would think SU fans would be used to a coach who is never satisfied after thirty plus years of James Arthur Boeheim.

results speak volumes, somthing changed dramatically from the pinstripe year to the next---it needs to change back.

Yeah ... our SOS went from about 82 to 48 ... need I say more?

btw what makes you think he limits the negativity to post practice pressers--duh? since when do a coaches comments not have an effect on players, morale etc. in case you have forgotten we lost our last 5 games last year and imho marrone lost the team---many disagree with that---but thats what happened.period.

Attend one of his luncheons on a Monday and you will see a completely different person.

No coach is going to come out a week before the season opener and say everything is great. My personal opinion is he wants Northwestern to think things are a mess right now and this is all a smoke screen.

And Lou Holtz expected to go 0-11 every year and won a National Championship.

Yep. They all have their own style. But I only said it because the poster said no coach would sound positive a week before the opener.

Has the excitement level in the Syracuse community ever been existant?

Exactly .. The entire place suffers from negativity ... reminds me of the complaining robot, Marvin (?), in Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe.

Have to agree, it's ridiculous. I can get being negative about football but everything is a big pissing contest

You don't really realize how negative the place is, and how easily it puts you in a negative disposition, until you go away for an extended trip or move.

I think a big part of it is the general crappy economy in upstate and lack of opportunities.
