Coach Shafer does two shows this week - syracuse sidelines and his radio show.

- im hoping two get two things answered ( neither of which talks about hunt)

1. how do we establish an offensive identity and get away from so many screen passes. screen passes only work when theres a down the field threat or the teams have to load up the box to stop the run. they dont work as a primary play.

2. how is our defense going to better prepare for mobile QBs in the future. Our DEs overpursued and made it easy to escape

Very difficult for me to find big faults in individual players, just the play calls/ scheme

Please get those questions in to Shafe, same things that everyone here is wondering.

I guess theres no radio show this week; resumes next week.

the syracuse sidelines show on time warner is filming now and airs tomorrow night

When you demonstrate tackling techniques, do you prefer black bears or polar bears?

- show was mostly special interest pieces. At one point Shafer said "we were disappointed, not from a scheme perspective, but from an effort perspective."

Ducking questions is the opposite of hard nosed.

Would some kind soul put up a recap for people who didn't tune in.

Thx!!!

So the show was hosted at Varsity and a little bit was made of the history of the Varsity and its relation to .SU football. They started with brief highlights of the game followed by Shafers press conference.

park interviews Shafer at Varsity for the show. they start out by talking how a win is a win and its better than a loss. He then talks about being disappointed in the effort from his players, and will focus on filming players during practice to evaluate effort. He talks briefly about Hunt and his poor decision - says it was a good penalty, Hunt learned and well move on. A fan asked how Hunts progression from last year has been and shafer says that he likes the progress and hes learning to throw to spots and open players. Someone asked if the play calling changed after SU was up 17-7 - shafer says yes that they were trying to slow down the game bc the D was getting tired when they couldnt get off the field.

Theres a special interest on AB and basically the players say he's competitive and hates to lose. One of the good quotes is that AB says we can be a top 10 team - not everyone believes that around here - but i believe it and im trying to get other guys to buy in. Shafer says that he had a good game 5 catches for 56 yards and that he has moved from a player with potential to one whos showing talent. Shafer talked about having the bye week after the firt game - said its not ideal but itll help players heal up. theyll use it mot to continue training camp, but to improve what they need to improve (no specifics)

They highlight Rob Moores big games. It ends with a few more questions from fans - what will you be doing this weekend - he says heading down to ithaca to tailsgate and watch his son's team. someone else asks who hes most excited about playing in the dome this year - he says louisville and fsu.

and that was it. i always want more Xs and Os in football talk but it is what it is.

that comment really worries me

I think it's a lot easier to change effort than scheme at this time of year. If the scheme was broken, it could take months to fix or insert a new one. Effort can be changed with re-focus, competition and other psychological ploys. It can change from game to game.

i agree that scheme is harder to change. that said, that is what coaching is supposed to do,prepare for the team you play and more importantly, adjust your game if it is not working.we did neither. we also did not have our players prepared to compete, but i already detailed that in previous posts

Look - they did adjust. Some of it worked (TD drive in the 3rd) and some didn't (Robertson breaking contain on 3rd down, despite different looks/plans). I think the coaches had them prepared, but the players didn't take the opponent seriously. Probably a little "they are like Wagner" swagger going on. I don't think that will happen again this season.

i should clarify ----i am more concerned re the defense. i give mcd SOMEWHAT of pass as he was calling conservatively given wilson in the game. however the ol line and run game were also dismal.

There are other worries too - the defense consistently loosing contain on an FCS QB, the LB's repeatedly failing to cover receivers coming out of the backfield, and the entire R side of the offensive line (including the center) getting blown back on running/short yardage plays.

That FCS QB could start for 30% of the FBS.

i dont undertand how people dont think we didnt make changes. we called zero bubble screens the last 30 min on offense? we flat out didnt tackle this was never a scheme issue.

No. He really couldn't.

Sagarin ratings last year had Nova finishing above about 30% of FBS schools withRobertson at QB. He's better than CMU's QB we're facing next weekend by a mile.

From the introduction to my weekly post show summaries:

The show this year will be broadcast from the Canyons at Destiny USA on the second level in front of Cantina Laredo. I don’t know if they will take questions from the audience there but they say you can watch the show whereas when it was a t a restaurant, their table tended to be in a secluded location. You can call in questions at 1-888-7-Go Cuse (746-2873) or, locally 424-8599. You can also send them in advance at this site:

http://cuse.com/news/2014/8/26/FH_0826140732.aspx#.U_39wfldX5N

(I do both so they can be prepared to give me an informed, reasoned answer.) You can also contact them via Twitter (@SUSportsNetwork) using #AskShafe. The football show is an hour in duration, (Coach Boeheim’s basketball show is usually 2 hours).

They’ve actually been kind enough to post a schedule in advance:

The show will air at 7 pm on the following dates:
Wednesday, Aug. 27
Thursday, Sept. 11
Thursday, Sept. 18
Thursday, Sept. 25
Wednesday, Oct. 1
Thursday, Oct. 9
Thursday, Oct. 16
Thursday, Oct. 23
Thursday, Oct. 30
Thursday, Nov. 6
Thursday, Nov. 13
Wednesday, Nov. 26

The show can be heard in Syracuse on AM 1260 or FM 97.7.
