Coaching

there really is no defense or special teams. part of it is coaching and the majority is the lack of talent. many of us said pre-season that the biggest concern was the d and the oline---it is now obvious. this season is a gimme for babers, next season is not if he stays this course. he needs to demonstrate the ability to coach a whole team and not just the offense.
i have said before that u can get away with a offense that has gimmicks for awhile, but not on defense. even the offense showed dungey running for his life several times. nd is NOT THAT GOOD,we are a mid- mid-major at this point.
i do believe that babers can adapt to this level, but he needs to take a hard look at the whole picture and not just the offense.
SEASON AND A HALF. Learn it, live it, love it.

And, personally, I do see him demonstrating the ability to coach the whole team. I also see an impetuous fan base acting like little bastards.

Nothing wrong with fan passion. Thats what its all about, right? That said, there are multiple coaching cracks going on that alot of people are playing off as "its a process" . The offensive plays calling beyond the first 3-5 drives is questionable. This is college fb, ots about slinging it down field. Dig routes, seems, go routes, but we fall in love with bubbles and throwing the ball way short of the sticks when we have the talent for chunk plays. Its frustrating.

And we just lost on a neutral field to a team they beat in their own house. Common opponent, they beat them we lost to them. Pretty much sums it up.

Not saying Duke is great, they just have more talent than us this year

That is using the transitive property, which usually doesn't work in sports. Duke just lost to uva by two tds, they aren't the Duke of last year.

I don't see "cracks". What I do see is slow and steady improvement from week to week. I also understand that we have a team comprised mostly of underclassmen who have, in the past year, undergone a coaching change, are now playing an entirely new scheme on both sides of the ball, and are stuck with playing one of the toughest schedules in CFB.

Bcubs, i get that and i love the way our interior line is playing. We are holding the point of attack. I am in the minority of thinking we DO have the talent to compete with proper play calling and getting a bit " out of the box" on defense, like blitzing more than a conventional t2 and showing some different looks. I get it, 14/22 of our starters today were frosh and sophs including Steven. I get it, love the future, but we could be better right now. Let's win wf and we will be back on schedule:)

I think both sides of the ball are improving. Just need more work and to get a bit more wet behind the ears.

Duke is 2-3. 1-3 against FBS. Lost at home today to UVA by 2 TDs.

We left points on the field today. Not just because ND had bigger players.
Notre Dame got some big plays off. The first qtr was free for all, no defense ( exciting I must admit)

Except the secondary. I see too much confusion and they haven't gotten taller or faster. It is what is is. Just have to wait for help next year.

We are really seeing how badly we needed the two DB's and RB that did not qualify this year.

So I watched the game with my buddy who played in the pros until 2010. On the DL. Happy to share what he thought of team improvement since he is legit (unlike me.) But...

We are the most bizarre first-five minute team. ND and Louisville did stuff to us that only happens in prison. But at UCONN, we played that role.

Our D did not improve today. It was tough to watch. No one deserves a game ball.

Our special teams ONLY improved with Brisly Estime back as a PR who was #2 in the USA last year. The K game was a disaster and Murphy has regressed and our punting game resembles clowns coming out of a VW Beetle.

Our O scored 6 points in the second half. So much for great conditioning or whatever was supposed to happen with our tempo. (Throwing to Fredericks on 3rd down? Goodness.)

ND is loaded with talent. Zero doubt. They were also unfocused and made mental, lazy mistakes. This is the same team who lost to Duke - who lost to UVA today, whose terrible - blast us the final 30 minutes. Not ideal. We did not get steady improvement this week.

All that said...we don't lose a lot of the first 22 going into next year and Babers said things click at the 1.5-year mark. But to think we improved from last week is wishful thinking at the very, very best.

Who's your buddy?

Thank you.
All this bitching and moaning for instant gratification is ridiculous, IMO.
What I saw was a team getting off to another bad start, granted, but fighting back and making a game of it. We were down 6 at the half despite making correctable mistakes. Our defense is a definite work in progress, but all the nervous nellies looking for an immediate fix after almost a decade-plus of mediocrity, are not only unrealistic, but borderline stupid.
HCDB said that the lightbulb goes on usually " in the middle of year 2", yet some Einsteins want perfection after game 5??
Seriously, can we just enjoy the ride this season? We're actually being mentioned in a positive light nationally when it comes to our offense," top WR in the nation", etc. How about we relax and enjoy it instead of micro-managing the resurrection of this program?
Sheesh.

I am willing to give this team a pass for the season for the most part. There are two things that are really starting t concern me.
We CANNOT keep giving up touchdowns right out of the gate. It's unbelievable and I have never seen anything like it. I don't know the solution, i am not that smart, something has to be done.
The offense in the second half has been really bad. I don't know if we lack depth or options but the other teams seem to be adjusting much better then us.
Let's go to Wake and make some adjustments and get back to .500

Not sure I agree with this. I would say Duke has a better defense by far, but offensively Syracuse>>Duke.

The recruiting services disagree.

We have a better WR and QB. That's it

Nd is a 7 win team this year, they just lost at home to Duke. The fact that we lost by 3 scores, and it wasn't even really that close, is a bit alarming.
I agree - where does everyone think that ND with that D (which has a lot of 4 and 5 stars by the way) would fare in the ACC?
