I'm going to delve into this later tonight, but someone posited an interesting question: How many teams have been ranked in college football since 2001 (the last time SU was ranked).

I'm going to tackle the P5 schools first, but I just looked at the ACC. Every ACC team except for us has been ranked in the top 25 since 2001.

When I have time I'll look at all other teams, and report back. It should be interesting.

I assume Indiana has been unranked since 2001. They may be the only other P5 team besides us who hasn't been ranked over this period of time. So depressing

Doing a quick look through sports-reference.com, it appears you are correct. Indiana has not been ranked since 1995, but other than that, I'm not finding any P5 schools who haven't been ranked at least once (Kentucky was only one season, but they apparently got as high as #8 in the AP poll one season).

Said this earlier but I'll say it again--

That is INCREDIBLE.

It's almost inconceivable. But we are a football school :).

Frosting - IU may be closer to being ranked as well...

Yep, I had forgotten about Kentucky but 2007 when Rich Brooks was their coach they were as high as #8 like you said. I cannot fathom we are 1 of only 2 P5. I wonder how many non P5 schools have been ranked during this loooong time frame..

Guess who was the assistant AD at Kentucky that year.

This was posted last year. Since then, Temple, Memphis, and Marshall have joined the party, bringing the total to 92:

89 schools have been ranked by the AP for at least one week since Dr. Daryl Gross assumed responsibility for the athletic department.

The following schools have not:

Akron
Appalachian State
Arkansas State
Army
Bowling Green
Buffalo
Colorado State
Eastern Michigan
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Georgia Southern
Georgia State
Idaho
Indiana
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana-Monroe
Marshall
Massachusetts
Memphis
Miami (OH)
Middle Tennessee State
Navy (Ranked #24 in final poll of 2004)
New Mexico
New Mexico State
North Texas
Old Dominion
Rice
San Diego State
SMU
South Alabama
Syracuse
Temple
Texas State
Troy
Tulane
UAB
University of Texas - San Antonio
UNLV
Western Kentucky
Western Michigan
Wyoming

And this is why the AD needs to act and not react to our current situation. If you feel like Shafer is a good coach and can coach our talent up to top 25 (not top 25 talent IMO) no change is needed.
