The committee membership changes gradually, typically with one member rotating off and another member rotating on. That allows some ability to use past performance to predict future results.
In 2013, Bucknell had a loss to Mount St. Mary's (RPI: 44) when no at-large selection suffered a setback to anyone worst than No. 26 in the RPI. The Bison were clearly the team squeezed out of the field, despite some quality to the rest of their resume.
In 2014, Hofstra beat Cornell (No. 8) and Drexel (No. 11), but it lost to St. John's (No. 25) and Marquette (No. 42). That wasn't enough to top Harvard, which defeated Cornell and owned a pair of victories over Yale (No. 15) but didn't lose to anyone outside the top 20.
The committee looks for factors that significantly differentiate teams. Ohio State's losses to Detroit (No. 43) and Rutgers (No. 51) differentiate it from Brown, Georgetown and Princeton. Georgetown's lack of victories against the top 15 (0-5) differentiate it from Brown and Princeton.
The verdict? Four Ivy League teams in the field, three of which will be sent on the road. The committee will have to wedge a third flight in there somewhere as well.
