Rumor is that the Jets are going to hire the DC for Seattle. Leaves a good chance the Doug will not be a HC next year...

Come home, Doug...come home.

he will just go work with Bill Obrien in Houston

Or he could do nothing for a year and wait for Coughlin to retire.

He should. I think O'Brien owes him one anyway from the day he categorically decided to not target any PSU players after the sanctions were handed down. Loyalty to a fault and it should be rewarded.

If Doug doesn't get a HC job this offseason he may never get one again in the NFL. After some owners sit on that for a while who is going to want to hire a guy who will just quit and walk away after only being with a team for 2 years. Not a good resume builder!

NFL is all about recycling coachs but to your point you have to do something to deserve that second shot. Marrone hasn't done that, I think he over played his hand. Then again he is getting 4mm for sitting it out, hopefully it is worth it. I'm more curious to see what happens to Hackett as note rumors areally swirling that Marrone held him back.

Doug will get a job in college again in time as a HC. Although if he doesn't get a NFL HC job now, he may never see that opportunity again

To do what? He won't be under Shafer, and Shafer won't demote himself to DC for Marrone.

Marrone won't be back here unless Shafer (and everybody else) gets cut loose. So basically if Marrone doesn't get a HC gig in the NFL this year, or next year and rather than staying in the NFL as a coordinator, he'd rather return to college to recruit, which he supposedly hates, and Shafer gets fired, perhaps there is a shot there.

Exactly - and made worse by the stories regarding DM running at least 2 to 1 toward extreme negatives regarding his personality and style.

Don't think that matters as much as it does to fans, especially when they don't like a coach. His biggest knock will be the fact that he's built his reputation on potential. If he's not in the game for a year, potential is a lot like momentum, all of a sudden he has none. There are plenty of potential NFL coaches that have potential and in order to capitalize on that you've gotta be around and be seen. Can't do that without a job and then someone else just takes your spot in the "potential" job line.

Marrone may have overplayed his hand. If he fails to get a HC job this year it is quite possible that he never gets a HC job in the NFL again. The competition is so fierce that any baggage can ding you quickly. He really needs to land one of the open positions this year. He doesn't seem to be the favorite for any of them at the moment. There would probably be plenty of college programs that would be happy to have him, but I don't think he wants any part of college again.

Yeah, totally. Can you imagine the pipeline of PSU players to Syracuse that would have occurred? A Nina, a Pinta and Santa Marias would have been landing on the Dome shores!

Under what scenario would he be back at SU? I can't think of one.

I try to imagine the conversation.

DM: Bill, we go back a long way, so I'm not going to poach any of your players.

BOB: ummm, ok? Thank you...I guess?

Once you've been marked in the NFL, it's over. I obviously don't know if he has or not, but, there's countless guys who never got a second chance.

Hope he grabs the Atlanta job.

Don't understand how he would be "marked at all". What was his salary with the Bills? To think anyone would have $4 million dollars dangled in front of them and say no thanks is ridiculous. If indeed he attempted to renegotiate a significant raise and extension and new ownership slammed the door on that option there was really no choice. Just like there was no choice but to leave Syracuse for the Bills opportunity.

Well, he did have three years left on his deal. So his choice was to take the paltry $2.5 million he was supposed to be paid for working next season and try to make the playoffs, or walk away.

But he figured with five other openings he could trade up to a better situation.

I wouldn't say there was no choice but to do what he did. Lots of coaches wouldn't, I suspect.
