Come back, Doug

Let's use this time to remind everyone that Hue Jackson and Jack Del Rio are among the guys being considered for a 2nd NFL HC job. What exactly have they done since being fired as HC's to reignite themselves as big names? I think JackBauer said it best, none of us know if Marrone has been marked as damaged goods by teams. Sitting out a year might not be the career killer some of you think it will be.

Don't understand how he would be "marked at all". What was his salary with the Bills? To think anyone would have $4 million dollars dangled in front of them and say no thanks is ridiculous. If indeed he attempted to renegotiate a significant raise and extension and new ownership slammed the door on that option there was really no choice. Just like there was no choice but to leave Syracuse for the Bills opportunity.

Never said he was, just dovetailing off Crusty's comment and making a statement about the nature of the NFL.

And to think there "was really no choice" to do what he did because he didn't get a significant raise and an extension is false. Two seasons of no playoffs, improvement or not, is two seasons with no playoffs in the most impatient league on earth.

What's been lauded as a shrewd business move might've turned out to be a play that leaves him without a HC position this year. After that, it's a crap shoot.

I don't wish anyone ill, but I find this situation very interesting. In a perfect world Marrone would have liked to parlay the opt-out $4 million with a new gig paying $ million or more.

Timing is everything. With six openings and his record of improving bad programs Saint Doug and Jimmy Sexton must have figured that the Jets or maybe Oakland were slam dunks. Apparently, Charlie Casserly wanted Woody Johnson to hire DM but Woody was reportedly spooked by the reports of dissent and conflict. If Arthur Blank doesn't hire Doug he is probably left with only Oakland and they don't appear to be interested.

If he is forced to sit out next year his stock is not likely to rise. Doug is not a glamour hire and he won't sell any season tickets. He will probably have to wait and appeal to a real basket case franchise - Washington, Cleveland, Tennessee. He would probably be perfect fit for the Titans, which his wife would like.

He either sits out next year or goes to work for O'Brien as a consultant, as Chris Mortensen reported yesterday. Even with the Bears hiring Pace as GM, there is little to no talk out here of the Bears hiring Doug. I think that would be his only realistic chance at this point, and that seems to be dimming. No way in hell he ever comes back to SU.

Just because he wants the Giants gig, or so is believed, doesn't mean that he aligns with what NYG ownership is looking for.

And if the Giants are successful in 2015, there's nothing saying that Coughlin will retire.

You and I have only a slightly worse shot at the Giants HC job than Marrone. He should wait for the New Orleans job to open - after all he is a Saint.

The way the Giants organization show loyalty to coaches and never make rash decisions and how they rarely fire coaches, I would be stunned if they hired a guy who just walked away from an NFL head coaching job. The Giants franchise is one of the best run franchises in the NFL.

We will see though
