Oops, it's come hang WITH Brent Axe
Oops, it's come hang WITH Brent Axe
I agree. Brent handed him nothing but softballs when he should have verbally launched grenades. In fact, JW didn’t offer any hope. But - if you want access you cannot upset with diffuse questions. JW did say JB has built up a lot of equity with his job - and that is all I needed to hear. He will coach until unable to on his own terms. That is what I heard.Brent Axe Q&A with John Wildhack
Based on his responses - unfortunately I don't see Boeheim going anywhere anytime soon.
great post. Agreed with everything.Watched the livestream. Brent asked Wildhack if he shares Boeheim's feeling that the only thing that matters is the tournament and he said yes, which was pretty galling IMO.
To be fair, you WANT the leaders of your program to say that the tournament is the only thing that matters because it means they measure success heavily by how they do there. Great. That's what the bluebloods do and what everyone else you claim to want to hang with do. But you can't say that March is the only thing that matters on one hand and make no changes when you miss on 2 of 3 years (soon to be 3 of 4) on the other. It's a total lack of accountability. And the ACC has quietly slipped to the lower rung of the power conferences over the last few years (thanks in part to SU's struggles), so the days of being willing to fall back on a few big ACC wins rather than winning consistently in league play to get you over the hump are over for the time being.
The surprise runs of 2016, '18 and '21 have deluded large swaths of the fanbase into thinking that it's unrealistic to ask the program for more than 18 wins and some good fortune here and there. And now the two most important people in the program seem to be on board with that as well. It's pretty sad.
On a more uplifting note, he did say that he hasn't come to any conclusions on whether the next coach will come from within vs. outside, but that doesn't mean a ton right now.
Meh. Wildhack isn’t going to say JB’s opinion is wrong in that setting.Watched the livestream. Brent asked Wildhack if he shares Boeheim's feeling that the only thing that matters is the tournament and he said yes, which was pretty galling IMO.

JW is in the business of getting asses in the seats…the regular season is verrrrry important to him.
I didn’t take much from that. JW is playing PR spokesman.
If he is, then he needs to be better at it.
Yeah, he didn't come out and say that the regular season is meaningless outside of being a path to March, but it sort of had that sentiment. Not a good way to promote your product (especially with a longtime rival coming to town next weekend) and a good example of why hiring a TV exec to run your athletic department isn't a very good idea.Meh. Unless the big dollar donors start withholding big dollars, nothing else really matters. It doesn't matter whether you are running an athletic program or a non-profit charity.I don't think the University understands or cares what's happening to the fan base.
If he is, then he needs to be better at it.
Exactly. I think your first sentence is a very reasonable thing to say and it's how I feel.If he can't say regular seasons matter because it's proven that higher seeding equals better performance in the tourney than what is he doing?
Don't even go on the show, sit in your office, work behind the curtain.
Come on.
He's an AD of a P5 school, not some assistant admin.
Exactly! And that used to be our goal.If you make the tournament anything is possible! Yes, but let me tell you something called probabilities.
