College basketball changes throughout the generations. I feel if we were to compare this team to any good teams recent ones would be the best ones to compare them to. The 09-10 team of ours and the 08-09 carolina team on case of depth would make good comparisons.
So far this team has outplayed the 09-10 team on the offensive end.
Defensively not sure yet. I think I would give the 09-10 team a slight edge however...
The defensive this year is better at extending with the guards, has a better shot blocker in the low post, better Charge takers in Triche, Scoop, Dion, Melo and Keita, and we extend slightly better on the wings then the 09-10 team. But , I have to give the 09-10 defense a slight edge for four reasons.
1. The 09 team had a better weakside shotblocker and defensive rebounder in Wes Johnson. Fair and CJ being paged for that extra step of speed and extreme athleticism. They have started to show it some.
2. They guarded the free throw line better with AO then Melo Keita have. I think Part of this is because our zone is extending more this year on both sides of the floor and Melo has been hanging back a extra step because hes more of a eraser. But does he have the weakside shotblocking help to cheat up to the foul line more?
3. They had a true PF to bump defensively and offensively in RJ vs Rak.
4.Rebounding was slightly better.
Our guards extending and playing some frustrating match up one on one defense is so key.
Now if I were to chime in why we are better on the offensive end...
Triche reminds me of Rautins. Not as consistantly hot but similar to rautins jr year. Hes better off the dribble by a landslide and able to hit the boards. Rautins made better long passes but you have to realize the majority of those were opened because we ran AO in the high post and because Wes was such a dangerous shooter to complement that.
Fair reminds me of AO's level of importance. Although AO was our first option, both are running out of the high post. But to make up for that in terms of hitting big buckets to win the game Fair does that every game consistantly (sort of like soph KJO).
The 09-10 teams had 4 guys and RJ to hit the offensive boards to hit big shots down the stretch.
Our current team has 6 minimum to 8 guys. The 7th and 8th being Southerland and MCW (who probably can)
Plus Melo and Keita who shoot ft's good enough to hit the offensive boards. Heck we could eventually run both of them on the floor late in games at some point if we wanted to make sure to get to the line or hit a bucket.
KJo reminds me of Wes shooting good off one to two dribbles. He probably is actually ahead of wes in finishing off the dribble. Say what you will about KJO he has turned to his jumper more this year for the good of the team. Thats what upperclassmen do they mesh in where the younger guys have weaknesses and favor their all around game more towards where those weaknesses are. That and hes a better shooter then driver while his legs are still healing to get back to full speed. But his driving game is so key to our success. Its great to have a 6'7 1/2 guy who can beat his man in isolation.
Waiters is like the Jonny Flynn that that team could of had. Hes a better scorer then Jonny. He gives us a second stud. He shoots from all over the floor. Not quite a nba range trigger yet as a sophmore. He distributes plays with tempo and a chip. Playing against waiters is like playing with Fire your going to get burnt.
Then there is Scoop Melo Southerland Keita MCW and Xmas who you have to look out for.
Better then the Rick Jackson Scoop and freshmen BT combo of that year and its not even close.
We are THAT deep!!!
Contrary to what we saw last year Rick and Melo would be a tough one on one matchup this year.
Transition we are just as deadly as 09-10 team I feel. Difference is our forwards finished in 09-10 more. We finish more with our guards getting the opponent offbalence on the way to the hoop this year. But Fast break points are huge. They cost us some trouble at providence this year. It will be interesting to see if our forwards and bigs do more off the fast break as the year goes on and if our guards need them to.
