Cooney needs some love

am I the only one that thinks his defense is sub par? Yea he tries his ass off but once he gets going one way, it takes him a half hr to recover and get back to the other side
Yup only you. He's in position more than not, breaks up passes with his active hands and its more than i expected this early on in his career. When he settles in offensively, everyones gonna jump on The cho cho cooney train.

that is exactly what we need from Trevor. Nothing spectacular just knock down a couple 3's and stretch the defense.

His being out there makes all the difference. It helps BT and MCW not try to take too much on and do it all themselves while playing 40 minutes of every game.

He needs to stop being so focused on three pointers. Nothing wrong with a 15 footer.

He also need sot stop posing with his arm in the air after shots. So does Southerland if he comes back. Either get into position for along rebound or get back to play defense.

I wish there was a love button as well as a like button. Exactly right.

I thought I would chime in. Great to see a better game out of Cooney. His progression could make SU a more dangerous team this year (and of course in future years).

I like his hustle on D. He didn't get many steals but always hustling. Seems like he knows he's only getting 15-20 minutes and he won't loaf a second while he is out there.

He does not need to do a 15 footer. Both Cj and now Grant are packed in there along with our driving guard. One of Cooney's advantages is decompacting the paint, the spacing he helps provide by making the defense account for him. We do not need a 5th person in the paint. While a 15ft shot might help him, it is not in the team concept. And for all the grief Cooney has received no one has ever called him selfish.

A lot of shooters keep their arm extended after the shot. It is not only follow through but it is a mechanism they use to repeat or adjust their shot as needed.

Lots of in and outs for him tonight. Also a very underrated passer.
This is a very complicated game.

Lotta strands in old Cooner's head

A 15 foot shot is not in the paint. The idea that a 20 footer is "team ball" and a a 15 footer isn't is crazy. And it isn't so much the arm in the air as the fact that he stands there for a second or two before getting back in the game. It sure doesn't seem to be helping.

No, I'm sure there are others who are also wrong.

I just think Cooney is supposed to be a microware type. No warmup nonsense needed. A big part of his role is the 3 pt specialist, Let's see if he is on.

As for the follow through, I think it is common. I think GMac did it and Cooney wants to be a GMac protege. I don't think it bothers any of the staff.

Better game for sure, hitting that second 3 was pretty big. Still wish he woudl take a few shots from inside the 3 point line, Rautins was the same way his first two years.
Against Louisville he made a nice up-fake then stepped in and knocked down an 18-footer from the corner. Made it look easy. Wouldn't mind seeing more of that.

That was my favorite moment of Cooney's short career so far. That looked too easy, and if he keeps doing that it can create all sorts of implications for his game.

I have a feeling the comparison to Andy (in terms of floor game and progression) might be a good one by the time Trevor leaves. He already does some fundamental things effectively, but they are often overshadowed by his misses. Over time, I expect the misses to decrease. As Ali said, he just has to keep working and good things will happen.
Andy had the best overall game (talking court awareness, vision, general bball I Q. ) since Z Sims. If MCW had Andy's head, he would.be the best player in the country. Comparing TC to him is a bit soon, IMO.

In his last season. Can we please all try to remember that?

I would definitely agree that TC is not at Andy's level yet, and he has plenty of work to do to reach it. That will obviously not happen this season.

That said, he has time to turn himself into that type of player before he graduates. He just has to keep working to improve. If he can become 80% of the player that Andy became during his time here, TC will be a solid contributor.

Looking at this I see a couple of shots where Gerry seems to be "posing" with an arm in the air but most of the time he's moving both before and after the shot, (which is really what i'm talking about) and he has a very quick release with both arms extended. He's also willing to drive inside the arc for shots.

With Andy Rautins, it's much the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKkuyI0ot5M He does do some posing after one made shot and a time out has been called. But he's on the move the rest of the time.
