cooney thread!

Today wasn't Cooney's fault - it's Boeheims' - we have 3 better shooters - we have plenty of shooting - he should not have been in the game - Howard is an excellent ball handlers and passer - and a longer and better defender - Cooney is a role player - unless he's feeling it he has ZERO business playing 20 mins in the second half - when he hit the side of the back board it was time for the showers - i understand the minutes last year but we are not in the situation

for an alleged shooter he has some of the most comically bad misfires I have ever seen.

Ferocious slider he uncorked on the first attempt - serious break on that ball.

Howard struggled today dealing with Anya's hedging often though. He picked up his dribble a few times too soon and couldn't get around the hedge. He has very good vision but his handle still needs some work. I'm not convinced he is that quick either. I fully expect him to get better and better with more work and more minutes.

Cooney rarely goes straight up to shoot. Always falling one way - mostly back. Outside of Stephen Curry, no one can make shots with the terrible form Cooney has on most of his shots. And not everyone gets better over time and our expectations for the kid ended up way too high.

What? He wasn't fouled on that shot....I was sure he must have been fouled.

Cooney had his 2nd straight horrid shooting day. But that's only part of the game. He played because he was great on defense. Frank has a long ways to go in that area but in his defense, the way we play zone takes a couple years to grasp. JB and other coaches have said Cooney is a very good defender. He was better than that today. He was great. Jake put it perfectly. He's not a great defensive player but he's a great defender in our system.

After fans seeing the zone every game, the whole game, I'm surprised how many still don't see how we play it. It's 50% effort but 50% knowing where to be and where/when to move. It's an amoeba defense. It's not your fathers 2-3 zone where a player never left their "area". It's funny seeing people say so many 3's were made because of Cooney. There's a reason we're 18th in the country in 3pt fg% defense and Cooney is a big part of it. JB knows what he's doing.

Bad game, whatever. He bleeds orange. He wasnt mopeing around cause he was struggling. All he cares about is the team. G makes a 3 cooney pumps his fist. Lydon dunks cooney claps. Howard makes a great pass cooney is fired up. Its great to see, all he cares about is the team.

Having said that, we're gonna need him, so start drilling those 3s like we know you can trevor!
I've enjoyed his time at SU. He is one of the hardest working players SU has had, and I think his accomplishments are unassailable at SU.

33/118 the last ten games.

I was at the game today - 6 rows behind the SU bench. Watched Cooney during pre-game warmups and he was hitting almost everything. Thought he was going to have a good day.
However, also noticed that he had a serious game face on as he went into the locker room after warm ups and also coming back out.
It seemed maybe Cooney let senior day get into his head a bit and was forcing things during the game.
G on the other hand looked really loose and enjoying the day and had a stellar performance.
One other thing I noticed about Cooney before the game - he took a hit from an inhaler before player introductions.
Anybody know if he has asthma?
Felt bad for Trevor today - He's been one of my favorite players the last 4 years.
Love the way he plays hard every minute he's out there, always hustling.
Was really hoping he was going to have a better day today - but maybe he's saving it for UNC Monday night!

Excellent point having nothing to do with mine. I'm sure you were thrilled today. You won twice.

Why do people feel they HAVE to dump on Cooney? There is just a 7 man rotation. He has to play. His 1-10 is still better than 0-0 than Howard was. 0-0 means the defense can back off and wait for his drives. And there isn't some guy running his a$$ off chasing him around the court. His offense/defense is better that Howards. Does he deserve 32 minutes, maybe not. I understand having Cooney have the ball for 15 - 20 seconds at the end of the game, he is the most reliable foul shooter on the team.
well, jb doesn't want frank howard to shoot the ball, if he does he out of the game.

Clownshow reply. Typical. By the way, why don't I get an alert when you quote my posts? Never shows up as a notification.

Why is fact a clown show? Your reply had zero to do with my post. And you've made that same post in other threads. You're gleeful about it. Outright hate on the kid.

And I have no idea why you don't get an alert.

Let Howard shoot. He won't do any worse than 1-8 0-6 every night out.

I just don't understand why people have to tear a guy up on a day that's supposed to honor him (and the other Srs.). Anybody that watched the game knows he didn't shoot well, but why do we have to come on here and denigrate him? We won. Couldn't you guys keep your nasty little fingers off the keyboard for one game? It's not a matter of what he is or isn't, it's a matter of showing respect for what he has done, and he's done a lot.

You said he's shot horrid the last two games. What's 27% over the last ten? Just really poor?

I want him to miss shots? Dumbest thing I've ever heard. Get over yourself man.

You don't know what hate is. This is nothing compared to what else is thrown around towards him.

Since he's been moderating this board for a long while, I'm sure he has a pretty good idea of what hate looks like.

Even though Trevor didn't have the day he (or we) hoped for on Senior day, here is an interesting tidbit
He scored both our first (step back 2) and final (3 FT's) points in the game.
Just unfortunate that he didn't have any other points in between.

Not one story of any negative behavior. He's done nothing to embarrass the program in five years. No academic problems, no run ins with law enforcement. No NCAA issues. This guy who has done nothing but work his a** off and be a good teammate is still subject to this endless stream of criticism. And I'm not limiting this to this thread. Nothing here is over the top unfair, but the anger toward him from the fan base at large is ****** pathetic.

Everyone knows he needs to make shots for us to have any chance at success. This horse was beaten to death 3 years ago...and some people still can't let go of the desire to bash this kid over and over again.

I'm excited to see who people will blame for all the world's problems once he's gone.

An honest D question...in the second half when Roberson fouled Caleb Martin on the corner 3 allowing for a 4 point play, it appeared Roberson ran out to cover the NC State Maverick dude, whom then quickly passed it to Martin. From my observation, it appeared that Cooney was late in sliding over to the wing area from the top of the key, thus, Roberson's run out to cover a legitimate 3 point threat, which in turn exposed the corner. JB was not happy at Roberson to say the least, but doesn't Cooney have some responsibility there? It just seems that Roberson is getting some scapegoat blame here by JB, as that's a lot of room to cover, especially when good passing is done...from my viewpoint, it wasn't as if Roberson was being lackadaisical in his effort there.

Trevor Cooney is on track to join Craig Forth and Brandon Triche in the "more appreciated when their career is over" hall of fame.

That's really insulting to Brandon Triche.
