Cooney

Has anybody seen any practices or had any reports on how he is looking in practices? Coaches obviously made the right call with the red shirt..just wanted to see if anyone had heard any news on how he has looked.

Somehow my son and I got into the Providence game 90 minutes early- did not even need our tix. We went right up to the court and stood for an hour watching everyone. Cooney is bigger than I thought, thicker than MCW. Good dunker too. Lights out, I mean lights out, from the 3. Very impressed. He wasn't, of course, guarding anyone or working seriously but we were impressed. He must be putting his time to good use.

I have to ask, why couldn't Cooney have a similar career to JJ Redick? I realize that's an incredibly lofty comparison because we are talking about the ACC's all time leading scorer, but he's got similar size (6-4), better athleticism (from all accounts) and is a flat out great shooter. This is probably a ridiculous comparison, but seriously...why not dream?

And we don't even have to deal with awful poetry when it comes to Cooney, either.

We have our Jimmer.

"Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds. And if HE were here, he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse."

I have to say... I miss the Paul Harris posts.

Personally I don't feel IMO that Noel is in our future ... he is a one and done if he its a college floor at all and that fits so much better with the Calapari philosophy. I'd focus more on Beejay and Goodluck
Looking at the video bleedsorange posted Beejay looks about the same height as Jerami, check it out. They are next to each other long enough to judge it.

I am as excited about Cooney's future as I am about any other player or recruit we have. The thing is, he isn't just a shooter who pitches a tent at the arc ... he is an exceptional athlete, deceptively strong, has great ball handling skills, and cagey defense.
I don't know where you get all that from . . . everything I have heard and read say that while he is more athletic than you would think from looking at him, he is not a gifted athlete, and that he struggles defensively against guards who are athletic (but that shouldn't be an issue in the zone).

I swear, player reviews on this site make Syracuse sound like Lake Wobegon - where all the men are strong, all the women are beautiful, and all the children are above average.

Exactly what I've seen.

Beejay looks like a 6-6 center and could use a few less twinkies. I like the kid, but I think Grant is the better player, and has the greater upside. I think Noel is going to be tough to get, but Goodluck is probably our best bet for a big in that class.

Rumor has it that Cooney shoots as well as JohnSyracuse makes posts.
Rumor has it that Cooney is JohnSyracuse.

Cooney will be a fan favorite, McNamara-esque, by the time he finishes here.

At least it's better than rooting for a program like Syracuse Football...where the fans think everyone's "terrible" or "sucks". I'd take it this way everytime.

I'm not sure what the competition level was, but I saw videos of his high school games where he was dunking on people like he was Elliot Richards.

ps. I am fairly certain Elliot Richards has a condo just down the road from Fab Melo in Block City.

OE: I saw the video and Grant and Beejay look about the same height and I believe I alluded to either Grant grew an inch or 2 or Beejay shrunk a tad. Together they looked phenomenal though. I think Beejay's bulk (enough with the Twinkies, Matt. DC2 is no shrinking violet when it comes to weight) make him a better 5 ... Grant has been id'd as a 4 ... though seems a bit thin for that position. But he looks smooth. I would love Goodluck ... love the name; love the smile. He'd be a fan favorite. After a year working our with our 2 teams Cooney is going to be good. As I said, he can shoot the eyes out of a dime and is a good sized kid... good fit in the zone. By next year he will hopefully have the 2-3 down pat and I suspect he will be a very, very good get for us.

Its hard to be down on a highly rated recruit who would get playing time at pretty much anywhere in the country but is redshirting for the good of the program.

When people talk about our class for next year, Cooney should be included in the conversation. We all want Waiters for one more year, however, it is great to know another very serviceable guard is with the team, learning from our coaches/players, etc.

When we won in 2003, we all thought that would lead to so many future stud recruits, additional championships. What is sick about when we win in 2012, we have those recruits/replacements/future stars already on our bench.

Better than a place where the men are men, and so are the women. Like Pittsburgh.
