Cooney

At least Cooney isn't afraid to shoot the three. Triche and MCW are nothing special from the three and Cooney is by far the best defensively of the three at the top of the zone. He hustles. He just needs more time. He needs to know he's going to play, not just hope he gets 2-3 minutes.

I think one of the hardest things to do is be a guy who comes in for a few minutes a game and is asked to make shots. It is not easy to sit for 15 to 20 minutes real time then play for 30 secs. Try it some day, warm up then sit for a few minutes then take one shot. I was asked to do this as a sophomore in high school, it was one of the most difficult things in any sport, I feel Cooneys pain.

Definitely agreed. I played the same role on my AAU team for awhile. I always tried to sprint my hardest up and down the court for a few possessions before I'd take a jumpshot to get my blood flowing a little bit. It's really tough to come off the bench cold and shoot immediately, especially when you know you'll get a quick hook if you miss a couple.

everyone hopped on Cooney being good on defense, like everyone hopped on syracuse playing a cake schedule. he was ok against the lesser competition, but was noticeably slow of foot yesterday, and against arkansas. and the d-nic/jsouth comparison is missing something. those guys are 6'8. cooney may be 6'3.

Cooney is by far the best defensively of the three at the top of the zone.

Credit to Cooney for working hard on defense as it is part of the equation. But there is more to playing defense and playing the zone than hard work.

There is also, lateral quickness, knowing where to be and how/when to rotate, the quickness to get out on a shooter when the passes have been quicker than the rotating, when to fight through a pick or screen or when to go under it, quick hands, long arms, communication and much more.

Overall as a defender in the zone, Cooney's work effort is admiral but he is far behind Triche and MCW as a defender.

i'll echo the "no confidence" call here but What he's a redshirt frosh. he was brought in as a shooter. (not a d specialist).
in no way would i ever write trevor cooney off at this point but frankly he's been a disappointment from the buildup.

Exactly - he is supposed to be the bulls-eye shooter off the bench for this team. He redshirt last year and knew what his role was supposed to be this year. I'm not writing him off yet, but he simply looks lost out there on O. Not having a consistent shooter/guard off the bench is going to really hurt this team. He needs to start stepping up. He clearly has potential - but it's time for him to get going already. Come BE time he simpky needs to start stepping up.

He's rushing his shots. He just needs to get used to the college game. The only way it fix that is for him to play more. We play Alcorn State, Central Connecticut, and Rutgers the next three games. I'd give him a bunch of playing time in those.

Anyone else notice that Cooney receives the ball only as a last resort from his teammates... That can't be good for the ole confidence meter. I've seen him with space plenty of times and mcw or trice seem to have very little appetite to feed him...

Not sure why this is... Hopefully no off the court stuff...

I haven't noticed anything of the sort. MCW has fed everybody. But it seems that it's usually Cooney and Triche out there together. Triche doesn't have that kind of court vision to see everyone. But Cooney has had plenty of opportunities.

Not understanding a lot of the Cooney apologizing in this thread. He has had plenty of looks and opportunities. He hasn't capitalized.

yeah, how dare anyone stick up for players on the team

It's one thing to "stick up" for a player - another thing altogether to apologize for poor play. Nobody is not "sticking up" for Cooney - we all want him to succeed. But he has been a major disappointment. Point blank.

No. Some of us don't think he's been a major disappointment at all.
In any case, it's too early into his first season to make an assessment.

That's a fair statement. I hope he gets it going.

Tonsils really got to him.

He will be fine.

Yeah. It ain't going to be this year. He just won't get minutes when we play good teams.

Boeheim always cuts down the rotation.

We only have two other guards. MCW and Triche aren't going to play 40 minutes each. The only other alternative is James at the 2, and that makes us a bit light on handle.

Cooney became a fan favorite before he even played a minute. Now we're seeing him and he's not lived up to the hype some placed on him.

Expectations were too high. He's going to be a good player. I don't think he's as good yet as we really need him to be.

Cooney is tighter than scrooge at bonus time. He is a good shooter he is simply playing scared. The best thing for him is to simply play and play as much as possible. Nothing that he can do in practice is going to change anything. The only way he will gain confidence is to do well in games. I truly hope that JB plays him a ton as i believe that getting solid production out of him is going to be key in March

I think it will be key in January/February!

His playing time this year is more about learning the 2-3 then scoring. With a team full of scorers I think JB wants him to focus on defense seeing that next year, if MCW leaves, he will be the most experienced guard we have. As others have said when he stops thinking about it, the shots will fall.

I disagree, his practice time last year was about learning the 2-3. His playing time this year is about being our consistent shooter off the bench. If he gets back to looking like a D1 shooter, even an average one then the offensive spark of him and Southerland is what JB was planning on being our spurt-ability team or the backup plan. It looked good on paper.

This team needs to start setting double screens and other creative plays to get J South open against MTM. Generally speaking it seems unless he is stepping into it he is a below average shooter; unless he's hot of course.

I think it is obvious from this thread that a lot of you guys have never really played basketball.. Not meant in a disrescpectful way at all. But to expect a kid to come in, fresh off the bench for long stretches of the game and drill threes is a bit ridiculous. Sure he hasnt shot well in the early season, but jesus, he knows he gets limited minutes in a game and feels pressure to make shots on offense. Agree 100% with the guy who said you cant just play him 2-5 minute stretches one time in each half. Basketball is all a rhythm and mind game. Getting little spurts like that is tough to play in. Some players do it better than others. Cooney's problem is 100% mental right now with him. Right between the ears. Won't be a huge factor this year, but to come to the conclusion that he just isnt a very good shooter and never will be here is 100% BS. Shooters play a lot off of rhythm and confidence which Trevor has none of right now. He will be fine!

I've said it many years. Syracuse is never great in the half court offense or just hasn't been in a while. Although, They were pretty dang good with Onuaku, Rautins, and Johnson. Just not enough movement, cutting, unselfish screening for each other. Not to mention, my man JB has been running that double high ball screen for 124 years now. Needs to be more movement in my opinion. Especially with the way MCW can penetrate. Movement occupies off ball defenders and allows you to attack off the second or third side. They win, but they really struggle in half court offense games because they just are not consistent enough in the HC offense.
