Could they have? Sure.

There were several clear options available. Some were even provided to the Orange scheduling wizard, just in case they hadn't been identified previously. Did Syracuse present these options to their future conference mates? Were those conference mates receptive? Were the other opponents involved with affected games contacted? Were they receptive? We may never know.

With Syracuse's recent scheduling issues, one might hope that the ACC will move to a 10-, 11-, even 12-game conference schedule in the future. There's no way to mess those up.
