Syracuse recently got a pair of teammates from Georgia Tech, who seem to share friendship/bond, have played together, and know each others games. Whether it was actually a package deal or just separate targeting of two teammates, could this be a possible creative way Alex Kline could be trying to achieve continuity in the age of transfer portal, where rosters are constantly being overturned and player development over multiple years is getting more impossible to do. It would give a team made up of transfers a head start at developing team chemistry both on and off the court. Additionally, It could also be attractive to recruit certain players who might really feel more comfortable playing with friends/teammates

Looking at the transfer market and who we are rumored to be interested in, here are some interesting possible package deals/teammates.

LeJuan Watts & Cedric Coward of Washington St., both transfers from EWU and both are from Fresno area (could also add as assistant coach, former Washington St asst coach Stephen Frankoski, who has NBA coaching exp and is followed by/follows Kline)

Jamir Watkins and Jerry Deng from Florida St.

Regardless of whether we land another package deal/teammates this year, perhaps this could be one of Alex Kline strategies we could look out for in future years?

I'm curious if they wanted to play together so much that he would have still come if we had also landed Stephen.
Me too. Would be a creative way to get players to buy into a deeper bench/less playing time. Perhaps Souare is ok with being depth and getting lesser minutes and that enable us to add more players like the Florida st or Washington st combos. The Washington St duo (Coward/Watts) might also have strong desires to play together since they seem to have been following each other around since high school.

so best package deal is to go after another team's complete roster?
No, unless it was a REALLY successful roster. More likely you would probably look for combos (or i suppose trios if it makes sense). Either way it creates less puzzle pieces that need to be fitted together and chemistry that has to be formed.

Louisville brought 3 Charleston guys last year.
I think that had more to do with their familiarity with the coach that came from Charleston as compared to a ‘package deal’. See the same thing this offseason with Iowa.

I am not sure. If chemistry is that important every team would want to keep their existing roster together so they would grow together. The nature force of nil money bags pull them apart regardless resulting in the one and done model today. Will recruiting two or three players reduce cohesion and ramp up time? May be, but you can also fall into a trap of "you want to sign me you better sign my buddy Blow..." resulting in getting extra baggages you don't want. I think a good coach can achieve team cohesion if he uses the summer and preseason time to put the pieces together.

I would say keeping your critical pieces from one year to the next is more important. Not only you are getting familiarity and chemistry, you are also getting senior leadership and less new pieces to work in.

A lot is riding on Red.

Sure, this makes sense. You get some built-in chemistry that way. We've done this in the past, of course - Harris & Flynn from Niagara Falls, Scoop and Rick from Neuman Goretti in Philly; we used to get kids regularly from Oak Hill for a few years, and later from that Prep School in New Hampshire who gave us 3 or 4 guys. We do the same thing recruiting AAU programs, too. Team Final had Christmas, Cooney, and maybe one more guy in those years that came to Syracuse. Lots of that in our past.

If you want to get to .500, acquiring multiple guys from a .500 team is a good strategy.
If you watched Georgia Tech last year, you’d likely agree that Syracuse with George and Souare is a much better roster than Georgia Tech’s roster.

I’m a big believer that winning is a result of the overall mix of guys and how they compliment each other. Getting two guys from a .900 team (let’s say Duke) doesn’t guarantee your team ends up at .900

What are the odds we can get the Florida roster ???
You are onto something here.

We should just go for the ultimate package deal which is the most recent championship team, the entire team.

We are the 7th most valuable MBB program, we have the prestige, history and attendance to do it!

Forget about Disney, we recruit the winning team starting five and get NIL sponsors to pay them to scream "we are portaling to Syracuse" during the celebration and interviews. Get the package deal and run with it, and the next year we do the same, always start with the post season #1 team starting five. We may even consider getting their coach to max out the built in chemistry. Than a year later we kick them out and go after the next championship team.
