could we win this thing with option football

I think Mahoney did a fine job running the option. The kid is pretty damn fast and had great timing.
yep, I was going to put this in a new thread but think it better here. This Mahoney kids got a little Doug FLutie in him. Just finally watched the film of him someone posted and having done some scouting and recruiting back in the day was pleasantly surprised at his skill set.

He's better than Wilson by a stretch and they'll need to give him enough time to settle in to find a groove. He's got quick elusive feet and has the arm strength to make some good throws. I wouldn't say he's got a "strong arm" but he gets it done makes some good reads has good escapability aka playmaking ability. MUCH better athlete than I originally was thinking based on just simply hearing "5th string qb", etc. Overall I'm surpised by what I see.

Now I wish he could have had a chance to get his chops against say CMU rather than LSU, but if he can avoid getting squashed and channel a little Flutie magic I think I'm no longer gonna find myself wanting to exit the dome in the first quarter having to listen (and not being able to take it) to all the Tiger revelers, but rather I think we can hang with them for a while, maybe even into the second half. If that happens this team is going to be better than many thought going forward the rest of the year as that will mean they've put together a complete team performance. Win? No way, but I do think we can put up a good accounting on Sat.

Fasten your seatbelts folks this isn't going to be what I thought (or at least not as bad).

our defense is built to stop the option. We put the clamps on Johnny Football his Heisman year, we absolutely shut down Georgia Tech in a bowl a few years ago.

Our strength is our speed, which makes running the option difficult. If I was your coach, I would attack the middle of the defense with the run game (remember, we are without a starting linebacker for the 1st half), and use that to open up some short and intermediate passing routes. The best way to attack a speed defense is with timing routes. quick outs and slants give us fits, but it would require the QB and the receivers to not only be on the same page, but to be on the same paragraph on that same page.

I think the recipe for an upset would be:

Win the turnover battle.
Get some unexpected points (defense and ST)
Control the clock.
Not give up big plays in the passing game by selling out to much on #7

You forgot the most crucial ingredient...some sneaky football deflation. :);)

I watched the CMU game a few times now and i honestly think this kid has talent. Him being on the s.c.o.u.t team all season HAS to be helping him too.

I was just watching parts of the 89' game against LSU. It was incredible to see how LSU had no answer for the option. I'm thinking this may be our only chance to win, run the option with the occasional option pass down the field to ishmael.
any chance you can Hot Tub Time Machine the 89 team here to run it??

i think 9 or 10 guys eventually played on Sundays.

Well there was 3 qb's working out with the 1st. team offense this week.....can you name them.
If that was indeed the gameplan for this week, then I really do wish Womack would get a few snaps at QB. Something tells me he'd be more effective running the option than at least Wilson, and possibly Mahoney as well.

I would assume Wilson, Mahoney, and Long but I could be mistaken.

A&M runs more of a spread I wouldn't consider them an option based offense now GT on the other hand yep they are however that was during Johnson's first year there it would be interesting to see how they would handle the GT option today. Johnson had yet to bring in guys he wanted for that system. I don't think you will have to worry about us killing you with short routes I fully expect your corners to clamp down on our wideouts and take that away.

Need to take shots and pass the ball on first down. Hope to see the TE involved big time on Saturday and i expect to see Ben Lewis a ton based on his blocking ability and short route running skills.

spread and option are not the same but still not sure we could run just that and be ok. we could mix some in though

A&M ran a zone read option with Manziel. I know its a little different than the traditional option, but it still takes gap discipline, and speed to the edges to stop

And that's the real issue. If we try to make this a track meet to get to the edge, we'll lose. We just don't have nearly the same speed that LSU has.
