Coverage Was Disappointing ?

And what value does that add? We sucked a little less than those Louisville teams? Woohoo!

State of the program today is a dumpster fire. Red was given a softball question to try to give fans something to look forward to going forward and punted. Also, cries about the “coverage” of the team. He’s not the guy that is going to turn this around; this press conference just added to the laundry list of reasons, but we are stuck with him.
I'm not arguing that we should be happy, content or any other positive adjective about the season... but comparing the Louisville situation to ours is quite frankly insane. Our worst season in 60 years was still more wins than Kenny Payne had in both years combined at Louisville. They're just not on the same planet of comparison.

Red has over 3x as many wins and almost 4x as many conference wins as Kenny Payne did over their first-two years.

You’re getting lost in the weeds. My comments were based on an opinion that we can’t fire an alum as head coach after 2 seasons.

I don’t care about comparing resumes. The only comparison is Louisville recognized a change was needed and actually went through with it.

Syracuse is deciding to kick the can down the road another year despite a lot of reasons that show Red is not the guy.

Autry's reaction to this final game to the season is so different from what we just heard from Gerry McNamara.
Both ended the season with the same wins 14, we had one more loss.
SU had 20 wins last year - so we are down 6.
Siena had 4 wins last year - so they are plus 10.
Syracuse collapsed in their last game - lost by 20.
Siena lost on a last second shot with .5 seconds left.

But here is the thing.
Red took no responsibility for the season, gave no reassurance to the fan base that things would improve, blamed the press for bad coverage and basically gave no real hope that next year would be better.
Gave no plan on what he wants to improve. I really don't think he even knows.
He came off like a broken hearted baby.

Gerry suffered on the surface a more devastating heartbreaking loss.
Yet he already was reassuring the fan base. Saying it was his responsibility to work on improving the team and emphasizing his need to bring in more players who could allow them to play more physical. Emphasizing that they have to be able to play at the rim better to be a more competitive team. Saying it was all on him to improve the team while saying how proud he was of his teams grit and growth.

Frankly Gerry did no more than any competent coach would do to address the fans at the end of the season. This isnt a comment about how great Gerry is - as I said the SS McNamara at least for Syracuse has sailed for the foreseeable future.

It is about how badly Red let us down this year, is still letting us down and whether he has any definite plan to improve the team other than use NIL to bring in better transfers.

I am a tax accountant so this is a hellish time of year for me.
And I will admit I depended for years on the high and joy SU basketball gave me this time of year.
Now it brought me a great big zero this year and I admit that I am angry.
Angry that the big shots up on the hill don't acknowledge that next year is destined to be more of the same.
And hearing what Red said, and didnt say, shows that he doesnt give a damn about the fans at all.
I’ve said for months and still stand by it that losing GMac was bigger than the Maliq/Judah losses. I don’t think Gerry is some savant but clearly we missed his presence/coaching this year. I think he helped Red a ton

Red is terrible with the media,, he’s never been good. But this comment was so tone deaf that it’s almost surprising. Red doesn’t have the goodwill or cache JB had to make that kind of comment.

I wonder at this point what percentage of the fan base WANTS him back? It has to be less than 20%

Problem is we already publicly announced he’d be back. It’s hard to go back on saying something like that

Autry's time has been rough and it's reflected in the media and the fan reaction, but a lot of the frustration has been built up over the last years of JB's tenure. Syracuse hasn't been Syracuse for a long time and there is an urgency that is there that will be hard to ignore going forward.

I honestly don't think that SU is constituted as a program to succeed unless the $$ and the coaching staff are upgraded significantly.

I just don't like the comparisons of X school did this so we have to do it too.

There are plenty of options to point at for both. The anti-Red crowd can point to Louisville. The pro-Red crowd can point to countless examples of coaches needing time (like Coach K inheriting an Elite 8 team and being sub-.500 his first three seasons). I don't really agree with either.

The middle ground and more rational approach can say this year SUCKED. There were a lot of misses and there was also some bad breaks (our most talented player missing nearly the whole year). Year 3 is huge is an understatement.

It's really too bad that Syracuse doesn't have a small group of supporters that after seeing this video, call up JW and tell him that if he wants to get rid of Red tomorrow, they will personally cut whatever checks are needed for it to happen.

I really wish I had that kind of money but I don't . I'm sorry fans.

Gotta be in the running for worst coach/manager post game press conference of all time. What a debacle. Sounds like a coach that does not want or expect to be back.

Honestly after a disastrous conference like this, his best foot forward would be to step down, preach confidence in the guys on his staff like Alex and let everyone know he is truly committed to supporting the program in other ways.

Take a year off, do some TV stuff and then go find a smaller program to coach at and get that passion back.

He sounds as ready to move on after 2 yrs as others that have been coaching for 30.

Until Red comes out with a statement, the fans need to have their voices heard on this, IMO. It's that bad.

To ask fans for NIL from their own pockets and refuse to acknowledge them (while blaming the media) after that type of season is a lack of self-awareness that is removal-level justifiable.

It's blatantly disrespectful. The program is for the fans. Continue the tweets, be heard.

Coach K and old school coaches getting time is just as bad of an example as Kenny Payne. It isn't the same environment anymore. There is too much money involved now and too many massive donors the days of coaches staying 4/5 years and building programs at the P4 level without success and "learning" on the job are over. They will be fired, especially at a top-level job that boosters are paying millions of dollars for, which they will not be paying that for a losing team's changes will start happening faster and faster.

For example, Utah just fired their coach who had a record similar to Red 65-62 (.512 winning %) because he didn't make the tournament. That is the standard now. Coaches at school who want winning basketball programs will not allow coaches to "learn" on the job like they did 50 years ago. It is a different day and an age.

If you get a P4 job, you better be ready to win in the first 2/3 years. Have a plan for the portal. Plan to build a roster. Plan to install a culture. Plan to install a system of basketball on both ends of the court. Plan to win over boosters. Plan to win over the community.

I was ready to move on to next year when I turned off the TV last night. To wake up to this self-pity garbage is just another kick in the stones to those of us who continue to love and care about this program. This made me angrier than almost anything else about the program this year and that says a lot.

I expect Syracuse to release a statement or tweet today from Red thanking the fans and saying he is dedicated to winning next year and apologizing for the way our season went this year to try to cover up his mess up in last night's press conference and attempt to reduce the negative feelings Syracuse fans could be feeling.

There's no point in overreacting... or even reacting really. Red's struggled this year in all aspects, including his media appearances.

It's definitely not great that he couldn't conjure up a positive outlook on next season. And it's silly to be critical of the Syracuse media. He's coaching in easily the softest pro or D1 college sports market in the northeast.

But honestly, what really matters is what he does starting today. If he's moping around and licking his wounds, that's very bad. If he was in the office at 7am working his azz off to make next season better, then there's hope.

And prove that you have the head coaching chops to implement quality systems and teach the game, establishing the foundation while you build out the roster [which might take a little time].

One more thing. The media has carried red’s water all year and repeated the nonsense they get from Red that the reason we are so bad is NIL. The truth of the matter is that there are many many many programs with less money than us who have accomplished far more this year. For Red to bite the hand of the media that has basically left him untouched during a historically poor season makes me wonder how smart this guy really is.

I'm mostly on a hiatus from coach criticizing but this is a bad answer.

How is he so ill prepared to speak to media? When asked about hope the the future he says he can't answer the question.

How about this? Its a nothing answer that absolutely anyone should have the ability to come up with.

"It's tough to answer that after a loss because even I'm frustrated. But we have great players coming in. We are confident that the guys coming back will develop. We'll have more on that soon, I promise"

This is why i don't think it's all about NIL. He doesn't have the makeup. We can only hope the talent is good enough to override it.

Could it be that he was commenting related to there being little to no mention at all that Donnie Freeman , the 2nd leading scorer was out for the season during any broadcasts? I heard about other team’s players during games who were missing because of injury. Same with Moore. There also was little preseason nor in season coverage of our new players whether freshman or transfer players. I don’t recall those “get to know” them articles, videos we used to see until the portal player transfer articles just in the past week to 10 days. It used to be a hot topic every preseason - getting to actually know our new players.

Why does he have to be given a 3rd year? Why can't you fire an alum after 2? This is why this program sucks. His fate should already be determined by the lack of production and overall ineptitude shown.

But it probably doesn't matter if all the buyout dollars are truly the cause.

Bringing back a guy whose seat is on fire before the season even starts is recipe for disaster. It’ll be hard to get any good talent to join what appears to be a raging tire fire…and then when the team hits an inevitable bump in the road, the head coach has no credibility to calm the team down and right the ship. I remain astonished so many people support the objectively awful decision to retain Red. There is no way this ends well, all we’re waiting for now is to see just how poorly it will end.

The one thing following Syracuse sports has taught me is that loyalty can be a weakness and a character flaw. Jake and Coach P were loyal to the school while the administration burned the football program to the ground. Now we had admins and BOT members too loyal to boot JB when it was obvious he’d quiet quit about 5 years ago, and are now going to be loyal to Red while he successfully completes burning the basketball program to the ground. Add Red’s total incompetence with the press which came off as disrespecting the fan base as another Molotov cocktail he’s chucked at the program this year.

Just say, we have a terrific recruiting class coming in, we are going to be aggressive in the transfer portal and we look forward to building this program back to where it belongs.

How hard would that have been?

And complaining about the local media? Are you serious?

He was treated with kids gloves almost all season. This is infuriating.

Who is this inspiring to donate the NIL funds they need?! No one.

Indeed. It's a new world. K's starting salary was $40k and JAB was making ends meet as the golf coach when he started as an assistant.

Not ideal. A couple things:

“Coverage” = Media (Not fans). I think it’s unfair to say he’s unhappy with the fans, by this statement. Not a great look, however given the time and place. Does come off as a bit tone deaf.

I have more of an issue with refusing to answer the absolute softball question “what do you say to the fan base”.

I mean holy cow, this is an open mic to get your message across!! It’s basic PR.

“The fans are disappointed, the staff is disappointed, the school is dissatisfied and I’m disappointed. We’re going to get it right. We have a solid class coming in. We”re going to pound the portal for veteran players. We’re going to have a familiar face around the program that can help raise our profile and help in NIL. There’s a lot to be optimistic about, but it starts with me. I take responsibility for our record, and I take responsibility for getting it right”.

He needs to get some basic media training. He basically answered all the tough questions and passed on the one question where there was no wrong answer.

They got better when Moore stopped playing. And they were pretty bad with Freeman
