Cowherd (who has been a rational voice throughout) went on a 15 minute rant on the release (or lack thereof) in 2002/3 of the tape. I think its safe to say that ESPN is feeling heat as to why they did not deliver the tape to authorities in 2003. I'd imagine that the Post Standard is feeling the same heat...to a lesser degree.

I was embarrassed for Mike Waters saying he knew about the tape on WFAN. NO ONE AT THE PS was worried about current ballboys getting molested? Or local kids in the neighborhood? You worried about your job? Call in an anonymous tip. Do anything. What is the matter with people. Seriously.

I can see this ending poorly for many of the original players to this story.

Then I'd put Mike Waters with ESPN into the Joe Paterno category. They all had evidence that children were being molested and never did anything to report it to the police.

Did Waters write anything about Paterno? I'm very interested if he had anything to say.

The ESPN/PS holding the tape hurts SU as well. This whole story gets lumped together and the public starts to belive that SU was complicit just like PSU. And yes, I'm aware that SU did not know about the tape, but I've been following the story closely. The casual non-SU fan probably hasn't been

SU needs to have a press release similar to what the SPD put out today. They need to squelch that fire before it's lit and put the pressure squarely on ESPN and the Post-Standard.

+1 ABSOLUTELY

In fact, I think the University needs to have an official presser to clear the air about what it knew, what it did and when it did it.

I have come up with a theory that might finally make sense of some of this:

It makes no sense for ESPN to have run the OTL segment without either including that tape, or at least waiting to verify it before ever running the segment at all... unless ESPN was aware of how bad it would look to say they have had it since 2002 and did nothing. So, instead, they run the segment intentionally leaving out the tape in hopes of others coming forward or baiting some sort of other evidence/admission of guilt. I think that ESPN was hoping that they didn't have to release the tape (which also might explain why ESPN seemed so bent on making it seem like the SPD had the tape and was covering it up; that would take the focus off of why ESPN had done nothing with it). However, because nothing else came out and the OTL segment had spawned significant backlash over irresponsible journalism and lack of evidence, they were compelled to release the tape to defend themselves.

I think ESPN knows they look bad for having sat on the tape for 9 years, but after the Sandusky shenanigans they didn't want to be responsible for not doing anything about it. The worst case scenario for ESPN would have been if Davis went to another network, gave them all the same evidence and interviews, then told that network that he had given ESPN everything back in 2002. ESPN would be in deep if that had happened, especially considering how late they were with the Sandusky story.

Again, just a theory, but its the only way I can make sense of OTL running that shallow segment without releasing the tape along with it.

If they do so, it needs to address the point that Waters raised yesterday in his interview with Francesa - namely that the University did not investigate all of the names that Davis provided to them in 2005.

How interesting would it be if SU turned the tide a bit against ESPN and countered a semi-offensive. Something along the lines...had ESPN shared this tape with us, one, in which, they have had in their possession since '03, we/SU would have been able to act sooner. And, maybe, possibly, would have avoided any additional allegedly abused victims. Christ, what was ESPN thinking! Had only what they claim (being a world wide leader) had acted like so...darnit, SU really wished ESPN had shared this with us... :p

You are right on and I do believe that will happen when SU releases another statement.

I thought they had, or someone posted somewhere in some previous thread. In conducting a private investigation, you still have to do so in such a way that the alleged abuser's reputation does not get tarnished in anyway...it's not easy to do such a thing with a non-public figure, let alone, such a public one...

I believe that ship has sailed...

It has been said that you never want to get in a pissing match with a skunk.

I think ESPN has shot enough times at the ship that you need to fire back. Can't keep turning the other cheek when you're getting continuously punched in the face.

Yes, it has today...but the point is to not do so while the investigation is being conducted, which was back in '05 by SU and my response to questioning why SU may not have interviewed all of Davis' witnesses.

If you hadn't edited by quote and kept it in its full context, there shouldn't had been any misinterpretation.
