Welcome to Mayflower Day!

The Mayflower, a merchant ship that usually carried wine and dry goods, left Plymouth, England, on today's date in 1620, and headed for the New World, with 102 passengers and a small crew. It had originally started its voyage to cross the ocean the previous month along with a smaller ship, the Speedwell, but the Speedwell leaked, so the supplies and passengers from it were put on the Mayflower, and the Mayflower made the journey alone. Almost 40 of the Mayflower's passengers were protestant separatists who hoped to establish a new church in the New World, separate from the Church of England. Known today as Pilgrims, they referred to themselves as Saints. The rest of the passengers were secular colonists. The travelers were given permission to establish their settlement from the Virginia Company.

The Mayflower is estimated to have measured 80 or 90 feet in length and 24 feet in width. Captain Christopher Jones, who led its voyage, owned it and purchased it in 1608, shortly after it had been built. It encountered brutal storms on its journey across the Atlantic, and on November 21, 1620, it made landfall at what is now Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, much farther north than where it was supposed to land. On that day, the Mayflower Compact, a 200-word document that outlined the rules of governing for the passengers, was signed by 41 of them. It was the first document that established self-government to be signed in territory that would eventually be part of the United States. On December 21, 1620, the ship landed at Plymouth Rock. The passengers disembarked on December 26, at what is now Plymouth. There they established Plymouth Colony, the first permanent colony in New England. Today we remember the ship that made the founding of this colony possible.

Who Syracuse Football Needs to Lookout for on Stanford Cardinal | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football should be a heavy favorite against Stanford Cardinal. But, that doesn't mean Stanford has no talent. The Cardinal feature All-ACC wide receiver Elic Ayomanor along with stud linebackers Tristan Sinclair and Gaethan Bernadel. Fran Brown's squad will have to contend with those players in order for Syracuse to be successful.

Syracuse football commit Ziyyon Bredell beats Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill 1-on-1 (youtube; video; Syracuse Orange)

Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill hosted a camp in May at Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, where Syracuse class of 2025 three-star defensive back commit Ziyyon Bredell plays. Bredell lined up at wide receiver, with Hill across the line of scrimmage from him at cornerback. The Syracuse commit beat him downfield with a series of stutter steps, caught the pass and pointed to Hill, who mimed like he was throwing a flag and fell to the ground distraught.

Syracuse football recruit sees confidence soar beating Tyreek Hill off the line: ‘You a burnt piece of steak’ (video) (PS; $; Pignatello)

Ziyyon Bredell saw the “Cheetah” and wanted his shot.

Back in May, Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill hosted a camp at Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, where Syracuse Class of 2025 three-star defensive back commit Ziyyon Bredell plays.

Bredell lined up at wide receiver, with Hill across from him at cornerback. The Syracuse commit beat him downfield with a series of stutter steps, caught the pass and pointed to Hill, who mimed like he was throwing a flag and fell to the ground distraught.

“You a burnt piece of steak!” taunted Wallo, a Philly-based influencer and motivational speaker who helped organize the camp with Hill.

“Welcome to the cookout!” fans yelled.

The return rep wasn’t so kind. Bredell tried playing bump-and-run coverage on Hill, who got his revenge and beat Bredell for the ball.

“That was Ziyyon’s first time going against an NFL player at all,” Bredell’s longtime receiver coach Duke Walker said. “He knew he was the No. 1 player in the NFL, so he’s like, hey, if I can guard the No. 1 player in the NFL, if I can guard him, then I can guard anybody.”

Hill and Bredell had their own personal talk afterward, Walker said, with Hill telling Bredell he loved his confidence and to keep it up. That was one small part in the soaring confidence of Bredell, who received his first Division I offer in March 2023 and only started playing defensive back last fall.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder committed to Syracuse in April, and his confidence has grown with each passing month, Bredell’s father Marc said.

Syracuse Football: QB Kyle McCord generating buzz for 2025 NFL Draft, scouts say (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football senior quarterback Kyle McCord is off to an "impressive start" on the Hill, an NFL scout says.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound McCord, a four-star transfer from Ohio State who was also a former five-star prep recruit coming out of the Philadelphia area, has helped guide the Orange to a 2-0 record so far in the young 2024 season.

The 'Cuse has been on a bye week and will next suit up, at home, against new Atlantic Coast Conference member Stanford in the evening on September 20.

Heading into this weekend's slate of college football games, McCord was among the national and ACC leaders in various statistical categories at quarterback. Since Syracuse football was off this weekend, that will change, however, a media report notes that NFL scouts have taken notice of McCord's first two games in an Orange uniform.

An NFL scout weighs in on Syracuse football senior quarterback Kyle McCord.

In a recent article from national writers Matt Zenitz and John Talty of 247Sports/CBS Sports, they got some thoughts from an NFL scout on McCord, who hails from Mount Laurel, N.J.

Here's what this NFL scout said about McCord in the piece from Zenitz and Talty. "I was not a fan of the Ohio State tape at all. Had him as a priority [undrafted] free agent coming into this season. He has really fit Syracuse like a glove. I still don't like his lack of arm talent, but he can place it when in rhythm. Timing looks right and he is playing confident. Most importantly, Coach (Fran) Brown is speaking life into his game from what I've seen, saying he is their biggest weapon, and that was never the case last year (at Ohio State). Impressive start."

As far as the 2025 NFL Draft goes, Zenitz and Talty note that, at least for now, "McCord isn't currently viewed as a first-round possibility." However, if he continues to perform at a high level, and Syracuse football keeps on winning games, perhaps McCord can garner even more draft buzz.

The 2025 NFL Draft, by the way, is scheduled to run from April 24 to April 26 of next year.

College football rankings: ACC teams in updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25 after Week 3 (greenvilleonline.com; Staples)

Kyle McCord has had a re-birth, transferring to Syracuse after an unsuccessful tenure as the quarterback for The Ohio State University. The Syracuse Orangemen are 2-0 in a very winnable Atlantic Coastal Conference. Your perennial powerhouses of yesteryear in Florida State are 0-3. Georgia Tech beat Florida State in the season opener in Dublin, Ireland 24-21. Kyle McCord and the Syracuse Orangemen have looked impressive, going 2-0 versus Ohio University and Georgia Tech.

The head coach at The Ohio State Ryan Day decided to start Kyle McCord, which went ok, but the Buckeyes lost to their bitter rival in Michigan for the third straight time and missed the opportunity to play for a National Championship in the College Football Playoffs. Ryan Day decided to move on from McCord after the season of disappointment and The Ohio State fan base had grown tired of McCord, which triggered Kyle McCord to enter the transfer portal and transfer to Syracuse.

Kyle McCord over two weeks is number one in passing yards with 735 with an average of 367.5 yards per game. Kyle McCord is letting the ball rip, throwing the ball with timing and conviction, a stark contrast from McCord’s tenure at The Ohio State University where Kyle’s timing looked to be late at times with receivers and anticipation to throw was not there lacking confidence.

Looking around the ACC Conference landscape I mentioned earlier Florida State is winless. Clemson is 1-1. Miami and North Carolina are 2-0 and the only teams you would expect to dominate the ACC. Pittsburgh, Louisville, and California are 2-0, but we will see during conference play if those teams are real or not. This is the perfect opportunity for the Syracuse Orangemen to sneak into an ACC Championship and potential college football playoff berth!

How Does Syracuse Football Match Up Against California Teams? (orangefizz.net; Papillo)

Boy, this bye week felt like an eternity. Syracuse football is back in action this Friday night against Stanford, aiming to build on its 2-0 start. It’s the first-ever matchup between these two programs, probably because they play in complete opposite parts of the country. This had me thinking, how has SU performed against teams from California in its program history?

The last time the Orange battled a team based in the Golden State dates back to 2012, where SU hosted #2 USC at the time and fell 42-29. If we’re really dating ourselves here, the two quarterbacks were Matt Barkley and Ryan Nassib, with the player of the game being Robert Woods with two touchdown grabs.

But with the new additions to the ACC in Stanford and Cal, it’s almost guaranteed that Syracuse will be making at least one trip to the West Coast each season. As bad as that may sound, there are a lot of positives that could come from tapping into a new market, especially with a coach like Fran Brown.

But to answer the major question of the article, Syracuse is just 7-7 all-time against teams from the state of California. Interestingly enough, the splits here are very strange. SU is 1-1 against the Cal Golden Bears, 0-4 against the USC Trojans, and 6-2 against the UCLA Bruins.

So where does Stanford fit in all this? Well, aside from breaking the tie, the Orange can establish themselves as a true powerhouse in the ACC this season, already being 2-0 and aiming to get to that plateau in conference play. It’s even possible that SU could find themselves ranked if they find a way to take down the Cardinal. Luckily, they’re on the benefitting end of the jet lag this time, but that won’t be the case on November 16th down in Berkeley.

Syracuse football players bring personal style to game day

MSN (msn.com; Kellogg)

Syracuse football has new players, a new coach, and even new custom suits from Armory Square’s Mr. Shop this season.

Each player got fitted personally by one of their team members, but they also got to personalize it.

The players sat and thought about it, coming up with different ideas and sayings to the final phrase that best represents who they are. The suits motivate the players to do their best in whatever they do.

“Whether it’s a job interview, whether it’s representing your team, we want you to sit down and think about it. This is going to be your suit, what could you put on the back of it to motivate you to be the best you can possible,” said Mr. Shop Manager, Chino Ingram.

On the inside of the collars, the players implemented their hometowns, faiths, and nicknames when they were kids and their families–people who have supported them from the start.

“There’s a lot of faith in that team so there’s a lot of hope that that’s coming from within and we saw a lot of bible verses and we were impressed by that,” said Chino.

And when the football players walked out of the dressing room and looked in the mirror they were stunned they’ve never seen themselves in such a professional way.

“A lot of these players are putting on a suit for the first time. So seeing a kid light up when he sees himself in a mirror They couldn’t believe it and that mirror doesn’t lie they look good,” said Chino.

Syracuse vs Stanford Prediction 9-20-24 College Football Picks | Sports Chat Place (sportschatpalace.com; Racey)

Stanford Cardinal (1-1) vs. Syracuse Orange (2-0)
September 20, 2024 7:30 pm EDT
The Line: Syracuse Orange -9.5 / Stanford Cardinal +9.5; Over/Under: +58.5

In this article we will formulate a Syracuse vs Stanford prediction for this College Football game on Friday, September 20th at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York. Let’s take a look at the prediction for this week four matchup.

Syracuse Orange Betting Preview

The Syracuse Orange are 2-0 (1-0) this year after they defeated Georgia Tech by a score of 31-28 in their last game. Syracuse led 21-14 at halftime and they were able to score the first 10 points in the second half, which was good enough for the win. The Orange out gained GT by a total of 515-378, didn’t commit a turnover, and went 10-17 on third down in the game. Kyle McCord threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns, while LeQuint Allen rushed for 83 yards and 15 carries.

Syracuse defeated Ohio by a score of 38-22 in their first game. The Syracuse offense has scored 34.5 points per game with 367.5 passing yards and 130 rushing yards per game, while the defense has allowed 25 points against per game this season. The Orange have gone 59.4% on third down and 3-3 on fourth down through two games. Kyle McCord has completed 69.4% of his passes for 735 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception, while LeQuint Allen has rushed for 181 yards.

Stanford Cardinal Betting Preview

The Stanford Cardinal are 1-1 this season after they defeated Cal Poly by a score of 41-7 in their last game. Stanford was tied at seven early in the second quarter, but they scored the last 34 points in the game for the easy win. The Cardinal out gained Cal Poly by a total of 437-229, tied the turnover battle at one, and went 4-10 on third down in the game. Ashton Daniels threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while Sedrick Irvin caught two passes for 92 yards.

Stanford lost to TCU by a score of 34-27 in their first game of the season. The Stanford offense has scored 34 points per game with 241.5 passing yards and 120 rushing yards per game, while the defense has allowed 20.5 points against per game this season. The Cardinal have gone 36% on third down and 4-8 on fourth down so far this season. Ashton Daniels has completed 62.1% of his passes for 384 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, while also rushing for 118 yards on the season.

Syracuse vs Stanford Prediction

Syracuse comes into this matchup after picking up a very nice win against Georgia Tech in their last game. The Orange are 2-0 to start the season and the offense has been very dangerous. Stanford played well enough to cover against TCU in their opener, but their defense has some concerns and cost them that win. I think Syracuse is going to throw the ball all over the field in this matchup and I expect another huge game from McCord. On the other side, Stanford will find some success against a sketchy Syracuse defense, but they don’t have the firepower to keep up. Take Syracuse at home.

David Racey's Free Pick: Syracuse -9.5

College football rankings: ACC teams in updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25 after Week 3 (greenvilleonline.com; Kassim)

The third week of the 2024 college football season delivered some good — and not-so-good — results for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Three teams entered the week ranked in the top 25 of the US LBM Coaches Poll, while four ranked in the AP Top 25. Miami, the top-ranked ACC team in both polls, maintained its early season dominance with a 62-0 win over Ball State at home, despite being delayed due to lightning. However, Boston College, ranked No. 24 in the AP poll, fell 27-21 on the road to Missouri.

Clemson and Louisville, the other ranked teams in the ACC, were on their byes this week, and will return to action next week. Pitt, Duke, and UNC moved to 3-0 with wins over West Virginia, UConn, and North Carolina Central, respectively, and have a shot at being ranked in this week's poll. Georgia Tech moved to 3-1 with a win over VMI.

Meanwhile, FSU fell to 0-3 following a loss to Memphis and continues to struggle during the 2024 season following a 13-1 record in 2023 and a No. 10 ranking to begin the season.

Here's a look at how Week 3 games impacted the Week 4 US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 rankings:

ACC power rankings: Florida State football plummets near the bottom after Week 3 (usatoday.com; Meyer)

Though there were some notable exceptions like Pitt’s thrilling Backyard Brawl victory against West Virginia, it was a relatively quiet Week 3 of the college football season for the ACC, with five of its 17 teams on bye,

Whatever sense of calm or predictability enveloped much of the coast-to-cost league didn’t extend to Tallahassee, Florida.

Florida State, the conference’s reigning champion and preseason favorite, is enduring a stunning 0-3 start after coming into the season ranked No. 10 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Seminoles’ 20-12 loss Saturday at home to Memphis, a game in which they were held to 238 total yards, is the latest and most notable setback in what’s quickly becoming a lost season.

As coach Mike Norvell’s team continues to plummet, where does the rest of the conference stand? Here’s how the ACC stacks up after Week 3:

ACC football power rankings for Week 3

1. Miami (3-0)

  • Last week: 1
  • This week: vs. South Florida
Another week, another dominant performance from the Hurricanes, with Cam Ward throwing for 346 yards and five touchdowns in a 62-0 win against Ball State. Miami has outscored its three opponents 159-26 heading into what could be a tough game against South Florida.

2. Clemson (1-1)

  • Last week: 2
  • This week: vs. NC State
Saturday’s game against NC State could offer an important and instructive look at which team the No. 19 Tigers are closer to being: the one humiliated by Georgia, or the one capable of blowing out Appalachian State.

3. Louisville (2-0)

  • Last week: 3
  • This week: vs. Georgia Tech
The Cardinals have looked impressive, particularly offensively, through two games, but those came against overmatched opponents. That will change Saturday against Georgia Tech.

4. Syracuse (2-0, 1-0)

  • Last week: 5
  • This week: vs. Stanford
Coming off a bye, the Orange can get off to a 3-0 start for the third-consecutive season with a win Friday at home against Stanford.

5. Boston College (2-1, 1-0 ACC)

  • Last week: 4
  • This week: vs. Michigan State
The Eagles got out to a 14-3 lead at No. 8 Missouri before falling 27-21 in a game in which they were outgained by a 440-298 margin. There’s little shame in losing on the road against a top-10 team, so Boston College only falls so far.
...

ACC Football Power Rankings: Week Four (SI; Caudell)

Another week has gone by in the ACC and the top three still seems to be the same. Clemson and Louisville were off while Miami destroyed a bad Ball State team 62-0. The rest of the ACC still seems open though and a new contender might be emerging.

After coming back from a big defecit to beat Cincinnati, Pitt engineered another 4th quarter comeback yesterday in their rivalry game vs West Virginia. The Panthers offense has been impressive, particularly quarterback Eli Holstein, and Pitt might be a team to be reckoned with down the stretch if their offense remains strong.

So does the rest of the ACC shake out this week?

17. Florida State (0-3, 0-2). Last week: 17

I don't know what to say that has not already been said. This team looks bad and they might miss a bowl game at this rate. The offense looks miserable and the team looks poorly coached. The defense was solid against Memphis yesterday, but everything else remains terrible for FSU. They might be 0-4 after playing Cal this weekend.

16. Wake Forest (1-2, 0-1). Last week: 16

The Demon Deacons had a tough time yesterday vs Ole Miss, but that was to be expected. Dave Clawson's team has a bye week on Saturday to try and get right.

15. NC State (2-1, 0-0). Last week: 12

The Wolfpack were lucky to escape with a win vs Louisiana Tech yesterday and the tough start to the season continued. The health of quarterback Grayson McCall is going to be the big question heading into Saturday's ACC opener vs Clemson.

14. Stanford (1-1, 0-0). Last week: 15

Stanford was off this weekend and will play their first ACC game next Friday against Syracuse.

13. SMU (2-1, 0-0). Last week: 13

SMU was off this week and will face TCU on Saturday.

12. Virginia (2-1, 1-0). Last week: 8

It was a disappointing result for Virginia on Saturday when they lost at home to Maryland. The offense could not get anything going vs the Terrapins. Coastal Carolina is next up for UVA and they must win that game to strengthen their bowl hopes.

11. Virginia Tech (2-1, 0-0). Last week: 14

The Hokies looked strong against Old Dominion on Saturday and the runnning game looks like it is finally rounding into form. The next two weeks are going to tell us a lot about Virginia Tech though, as they face Rutgers and Miami.

10. Duke (3-0, 0-0). Last week: 10

It was not pretty, but the Blue Devils got the win against UConn and remain undefeated. This was an important game for Duke in terms of their bowl hopes and it was crucial for Manny Diaz to get this win. The Blue Devils travel to Middle Tennessee next week and a 4-0 start is certainly in sights.

9. Georgia Tech (3-1, 1-1). Last week: 9

It was only VMI, but Georgia Tech dominated the game exactly how you would want them too. The defense was relentless and the offense was very efficent, especially through the air. The Yellow Jackets can re-insert themselves into the ACC race if they can find a way to upset Louisville on Saturday.

8. Boston College (2-1, 1-0). Last week: 4

For a moment, it looked like the Eagles might be ready to establish themselves as a top ACC team if they had knocked off No. 6 Missouri, but Boston College fell just short. This still looks like a good team though and should be able to make a bowl game. Will they be able to defeat Michigan State at home this weekend?

7. North Carolina (3-0, 0-0). Last week: 7

It still feels like we don't really know much about North Carolina right now. They did beat Minnesota, but wins over Charlotte and NC Central don't show much about the team. Could James Madison be a sneaky test at home this weekend?

6. Cal (3-0, 0-0). Last week: 6

The Golden Bears remained undefeated on Saturday by beating San Diego State and now they must travel across the country for their first ACC conference game. The defense has looked strong through three weeks and that might be enough against a Florida State team who can't score against anyone right now.

5. Syracuse (2-0, 1-0). Last week: 5

Syracuse was off this week and will face Stanford on Friday.

4. Pitt (3-0, 0-0). Last week: 4

Is Pitt really the 4th best team in the ACC? They might be and they have earned this spot over the rest of the teams due to two wins over Big 12 teams. The Panthers defense still leaves a lot to be desired, but the offense looks the best it has since they won the ACC in 2021. With Youngstown State on deck, a 4-0 start appears imminent for Pat Narduzzi's team.
...

2024 ACC Power Rankings Week 3: Hurricanes Reign Supreme A Top The ACC (SI; Sandle)

17. Florida State (0-3)

FSU, it's time to focus on next season. Unless a miracle happens and they can find a way to a bowl game, this is one of the worst offenses in the entire country. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is not the answer and he never was going into this season. It might be time to look at Brock Gleen and see if there can be a spark with him under center.

16. Stanford (1-1)

A bye week for Stanford as they look to get back on track for next week. Some extra time for missing players to get healthy and a chance on the field is always something that helps a struggling team.

15. Wake Forest (1-2)

It wasn't the best showing against No. 5 Ole Miss but learning from Lane Kiffin that the program is pulling out of the home-and-home matchup for next season is something new. This game was bad for the Demon Deacons but wasn't that bad that they paid the buyout so that they would not see the SEC team again. It makes the ACC look like a weak conference.

14. Virginia (1-2)

Losing to Maryland at home by a large margin has to hurt the chances of the team moving forward. It was a stale offensive performance Anthony Colandrea had a rough game. two interceptions and wildly inconsistent with the ball cost the Cavalier the game.

13. SMU (2-1)

A bye week for the Mustangs who might have figured out who their quarterback is moving forward. If not, they need to figure that out as soon as possible because ACC is around the corner.

12. North Carolina (3-0)

Another win for the Tar Heels as they cruise to a victory over the North Carolina Central Eagles. , Omarion Hampton continues to look like one of the best backs in the country rushing for over 200 yards and three touchdowns. He has this team on his back with the questionable passing game as they continue to move forward.

11. Virginia Tech (2-1)

Maybe the Hokies have their groove back with a dominant rushing attack against Old Dominion. Kyron Drones had over 100 yards of rushing as well as Bhayshul Tuten. If they can keep this up then they could rush back into the spot like the ACC.

10. Duke (3-0)

The Blue Devils may be undefeated but that does not mean that these victories have come easily. The defense is holding up but not to a Manny Diaz level. The same with offensive production. It is an inconsistent 3-0.

9. NC State (2-1)

It was a bit of a dogfight against LA Tech for the Wolfpack as they grind out a victory. The key for this game is that the starter Grayson McCall has an undisclosed injury that led him to miss most of the game. He started with 9/13 before leaving that leaving freshman CJ Bailey to take control. He struggled in the beginning, however, he quickly got ahold of himself and the team as they started to run the ball effectively.

8. Georgia Tech (3-1)

One of the best passing games in Haynes King's college career. Going into halftime, he threw for 275 yards, 17/22 from the field, and had three touchdowns. He had nothing else to prove and the team still ran up the score against Virginia Military Institute. A great through-the-air game from an offense that typically wins with their rushing attack.

7. Cal (3-0)

A suprise for some but the Golden Bears look great so far this season. An SEC win to add along a dominant run game is going wonders for the new ACC team. Jaivian Thomas has turned into a stud running back in the absence of Jaydn Ott. The team had 275 rushing yards and he had 169 of them. He averaged 9.9 yards a carry and led the team to a smooth victory.

6. PITT (3-0)

Panthers, you have a quarterback. Another Backyard Brawl, of course it would be an instant classic. Eli Holstein looks like the future for the program throwing for 21-30, 301 yards, and 3 touchdowns. The Panthers sit undefeated so far this season and they could be a scary team to face. They have defeated two Big-12 Teams and they look strong.

5. No. 24 Boston College (3-1)

In the first half, there was a slim chance for the Eagles to defeat No. 6 Missouri on the road but eventually, the best receiver in the nation Luther Burden III arrived and performed at a different level. The Eagles did look good at points but the talent level on both sides of the ball started to show towards the second half. They are a good team and are in a great position but they just faced a better team.

4. No. 22 Clemson

A bye week for the Tigers. Nothing much has changed in the ACC to move them from this spot but they have a chance to move up with a dominant victory over NC State in their next game.

3. Syracuse (2-0)

A bye week for the Orange as well. Next week they could remind the world that they could be a powerhouse in the ACC.

ACC Power Rankings after Week 3: Miami is still the class of the ACC (saturdaydownsouth.com; Davis)

Week 3 of ACC action is in the books.

Another week goes by and Miami still looks like the best team in the ACC by a good margin. The Hurricanes defeated Ball State 62-0 this week to move to 3-0 on the season.

It was a relatively-light week for the league, with only 12 teams in action. Some of the best teams in the ACC (Clemson and Louisville) were idle this week while others across the league were engaged in nonconference showdowns.

Here’s Saturday Down South’s updated Week 3 power rankings:

17. Wake Forest (Previously: 17)

Another big loss for Wake Forest this week, who fell 40-6 at home to Ole Miss. The Demon Deacons gave it their best shot but it wasn’t nearly enough.

16. Florida State (Previously: 16)

I seriously considered moving Florida State to last place in these power rankings, and I wouldn’t argue with you if you said that’s where it deserves to be. An improbable collapse from the Noles, who have clinched their season win total under by mid-September. Is losing to Memphis rock bottom? I’m not so sure that it is at this point. Of the 9 games left on Florida State’s schedule, 8 are against power-conference competition. The Noles are still 6 wins away from bowl eligibility. They’ll have to beat at least 2 of Clemson, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame or Florida to get there.

15. Stanford (Previously: 15)

Stanford was off this week.

14. Virginia (Previously: 12)

Virginia turned it over 4 times in a loss to Maryland on Saturday night. That’s a winnable game for Tony Elliott down the drain.

13. Duke (Previously: 14)

Solid win for Manny Diaz and the Blue Devils on Saturday vs. UConn. Duke is 3-0 ahead of a trip to Middle Tennessee next week. Bowl eligibility isn’t likely, but it’s not impossible, either.

12. SMU (Previously 13)

SMU moves up a spot on its bye week. That’s mostly due to other teams in this area losing or looking bad, but I’ll also give the Mustangs some credit for picking a lane. Rhett Lashlee announced earlier this week that Kevin Jennings will be the starting quarterback moving forward.

11. Virginia Tech (Previously: 10)

Virginia Tech finally gets a win in Norfolk! Congrats to the Hokies and Brent Pry. Still not sure this team is very good, though.

10. Boston College (Previously: 9)

Tough, hard-fought loss for Boston College in Columbia on Saturday. I think that Mizzou team is really good, so BC testing the Tigers like that on the road is very impressive. I have Boston College ranked 10th, but the margins are thin here. I think this team can hang with anyone in the ACC with the exception of maybe Miami.

8. Georgia Tech (Previously: 7)

Georgia Tech crushed VMI this week to move to 3-1 on the year. Big test for the Yellow Jackets next weekend against Louisville on the road.

7. NC State (Previously: 4)

I’m officially worried about NC State. It certainly doesn’t help that Grayson McCall left the Wolfpack’s win over Louisiana Tech early with an injury. But with or without McCall, NC State has problems.

7. Cal (Previously: 8)

Cal smashed San Diego State 31-10 on Saturday night. Jaivian Thomas averaged almost 10 yards per carry and Fernando Mendoza had another strong game at quarterback. The Golden Bears have been very impressive so far this season and they’ll get a chance to move to 4-0 next week against Florida State.

6. Syracuse (Previously: 6)

Syracuse was off this week.

5. Pitt (Previously: 11)

I’m moving Pitt up the board aggressively this week following its win over West Virginia. The Panthers already have 2 power-conference wins this season. They both required some late-game heroics, but it’s still more than most teams in this league can say after Week 3. Eli Holstein has a good case as the second-best quarterback in this league behind Cam Ward.

ACC Football Review: Pitt QB Eli Holstein -- Escape Artist (SI; Curtis)

Most Impressive Houdini Escape

Pittsburgh QB Eli Holstein

For the second week in a row, Pittsburgh redshirt freshman quarterback Eli Holstein turned what seemed destined to be a mediocre performance in a loss to spectacular comeback showing in a win.

Last week, was 8-for-21 for 102 yards, no touchdowns and one interception as Cincinnati took a 27-6 lead late in the third quarter. Holstein then completed 12 of his final 14 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns while adding 22 yards on the ground for a 28-27 victory.

He authored an even more impressive turnaround at the end of this weekend’s game against archrival West Virginia.

The Mountaineers scored a touchdown to take a 34-24 lead with 4:54 left in the game. To that point Pitt had 4 yards of total offense in the second half and gave no indication things would improve.

However, on the next two Pitt possessions, Holstein ran for 63 yards and completed 4 of 5 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers scored touchdowns on both possessions to steal a 38-34 victory.

Most Impressive first quarter of the season (three games)

Miami and QB Cam Ward

The 3-0 Hurricanes haven’t played the toughest schedule so far, but they are fifth in the nation in scoring (53.0 points per game) and third in average margin of victory (43.0 points).

Miami quarterback Cam Ward threw five touchdown passes in the win over Ball State and his 11 TD passes for the season lead the country. He is fourth in the nation in passer rating at 209.26, with 11 TD passes and one interception.

Least Impressive first quarter of the season (three games)
Florida State

The Seminoles are 0-3 for just the second time since 1976, but it’s the second time in four years they are 0-3 under Mike Norvell. More damning is that none of the losses were against a team that is ranked this week and none came in a true road game. The Seminoles lost to Georgia Tech on a neutral field in Ireland, and they lost to Boston College and Memphis at home.

West Virginia vs. Pitt Condensed Game | 2024 ACC Football

The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Pitt Panthers renewed the "Backyard Brawl" in Pittsburgh and the rivalry certainly lived up to the hype. In the 107th edition of the brawl, Pitt rallied from a 10-point deficit to win, 38-34. With just over 3 minutes remaining, Eli Holstein turned 2nd & 30 into a huge touchdown, and after a stop for the defense Holstein led the Panthers on a game-winning drive that culminated in a touchdown run by Derrick Davis Jr. Holstein finished the game 21-30 for 360 total yards and 3 passing touchdowns.

The Seminoles suffered a tough 20-12 loss at home to the Memphis Tigers. DJ Uiagalelei passed for 201 yards, and Malik Benson caught 5 passes for 99 yards for Florida State. FSU's defense finished with 3.0 sacks and 9.0 tackles for loss.

Maryland vs. Virginia Condensed Game | 2024 ACC Football

The Cavaliers lost to the visiting Terrapins, 27-13. After leading at halftime, UVA was outgained 250-82 and outscored 20-0 in the second half. Quarterback Anthony Colandrea was 21-27 for 247 yards and a rushing touchdown. Wide receiver Trell Harris caught four passes for 72 yards. Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. finished the game 28-43 for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Tai Felton caught nine passes for 117 yards and a touchdown.

The Golden Bears ran up and down the field against the Aztecs on their way to a 31-10 victory. Cal had 275 rushing yards in the game, on their way to 473 total yards. By comparison, the Golden Bears held San Diego State to 276 total yards. With running back Jaydn Ott missing the game, Jaivian Thomas got a majority of the carries for Cal and he ran for 169 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 21-29 for 198 yards and two touchdowns, but another rush touchdown.

After a lengthy weather delay, the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes took care of business with a 62-0 Win over the Ball State Cardinals. Cam Ward had another fantastic outing, completing 19-28 passes for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns in the win. Of his 17 completions in the first half, 10 of them went for more than 20 yards as the Canes built a huge lead. Jacolby George caught 6 passes for 109 yards and a score and Xavier Restrepo caught 3 passes for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns for Mario Cristobal's crew. Ajay Allen carried the ball 7 times for 104 yards. The defense held Ball State to 115 total yards with 8 tackles for losses and 4 sacks on the day.

The Yellow Jackets bounced back from last week's disappointment to get a convincing 59-7 win over VMI. QB Haynes King went 17 of 22 for 275 yards and 3 scores from the pocket. Eric Singleton Jr. went for 102 yards and a touchdown, Malik Rutherford and Avery Boyd also caught touchdowns for GT. Trelain Maddox, Anthony Carrie and QB Zach Pyron (2 TD) each registered rushing touchdowns for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets' defense registered 10.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks in the victory.

Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion: The Virginia Tech Hokies went on the road and came away with a 37-17 win over the Old Dominion Monarchs. Kyron Drones had a great game, completing 15-26 passes for 293 total yards and 2 TDR. Bhayshul Tuten ran well, toting the rock for 115 yards and 2 scores on 21 carries for Brent Pry's offense. The defense was led by a relentless Antwaun Powell-Ryland, who racked up 4.0 of the Hokies' 5.0 sacks and registered 4.0 tackles for loss in the win.

Filling in for Jaquez Moore, running back Star Thomas got the start and ran for 122 yards on 22 carries. Wide receiver Que'Sean Brown caught the ball all 11 times he was targeted for 87 yards and a touchdown.

From Yahoo! Sports: College football winners and losers (2024 Week 3), here are some ACC-related highlights...

Florida State’s terrible start is unique.

The Seminoles became the ninth team in the AP poll era to start the season 0-3 after being ranked in the top 10 of the preseason poll after a 20-12 loss to Memphis on Saturday. The Seminoles had three first-half turnovers in the loss as Memphis was not scared of Florida State’s passing game.
What sets FSU apart from the other eight preseason top-10 teams is its opponents. Florida State is the first team from the group to have all three of its losses come against unranked teams. The other eight teams all lost to at least one ranked opponent in their season-opening stretch.
Florida State opened the season with hopes of winning the ACC and making the College Football Playoff. Now the Seminoles are hoping to simply make a bowl game. Florida State needs to go 6-3 over its final nine games to make a bowl.
If history is any guide, that won’t be an easy task. Just three of the previous eight top-10 teams to start 0-3 have finished with winning records...
Things are rough in Tallahassee. And the symbolism couldn’t have been any more apparent when a fire alarm started going off at the end of head coach Mike Norvell’s postgame news conference.

Winners...

Pitt: The Panthers sure know how to be dramatic. After beating Cincinnati on a late field goal in Week 2, Pitt got a 1-yard TD by Derrick Davis Jr. with 34 seconds to go to win the Backyard Brawl 38-34 over West Virginia. Eli Holstein threw for 301 yards and three TDs while rushing for 59 yards as the game featured three second-half lead changes.
Pitt led 24-17 midway through the third quarter before West Virginia reeled off 17 straight to take a 10-point lead with 4:55 to go. The Panthers cut the lead to seven with 3:06 to go and quickly got the ball back for the game-winning drive after forcing a three-and-out.

Pitt is IT!

Post Malone at the Empower FCU Amphitheater Saturday September 14, 2024, in Geddes, N.Y. (Scott Schild |sschild@syracuse.com)

Post Malone calls Syracuse an ‘amazing f***ing town’ during sold-out homecoming concert (review, photos) (PS; Hernandez)

Post Malone’s concert in his native city of Syracuse was proof that you can always come home.

A young crowd came out strong on a hot, late summer Saturday night in September, dressed in cowboy hats, cowboy boots and plenty of American flag outfits. The Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater buzzed with energy from openers Dan Spencer and Muscadine Bloodline, eagerly awaiting to see the Syracuse native take the stage.

Austin Richard Post, known to his fans as Post Malone, arrived wearing a Syracuse University shirt emblazoned with mascot Otto the Orange, jeans and no shoes.

The opening notes of “Wrong Ones” were paired with pyrotechnics so big you could feel them deep into the audience. The opening song is one of many from his feature-heavy “F-1 Trillion” album complete with fiddle and a fleet of guitars, a far cry from his days of braids and rap tracks of his freshman project, “Stoney.”

Syracuse is the third city on the F1-Trillion Tour and is the Grammy-nominated singer and rapper’s first show in Central New York since 2015 at Syracuse University. He addressed the audience early in the evening after performing “Finer Things” and gave a shout-out to his Upstate New York birthplace.

“I was born in Syracuse f***ing New York, ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “Thank you for having me tonight ladies and gentlemen and thank you for coming out. ... I just wanted to say how f***ing grateful and honored I am to be back in this f***ing amazing town, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you so very much.”

Post Malone lived in Central New York until he was 10, when his family moved to Texas because his father was offered a job working for the Dallas Cowboys. Though he currently lives in Utah, his family still owns a home in Baldwinsville, which also got a mention during the night.

Post Malone fuels up for Syracuse concert at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

“I’ve been doing this for almost 10 years professionally so I appreciate it more than I could ever f***ing say and I love you so very f***ing much, ladies and gentlemen, so thank you. From Baldwinsville, we went around the world f***ing twice. Who’s from Baldwinsville in this motherf***er tonight?” Malone asked the crowd.

The rest of the show bounced back and forth between his new country music album and his older rap and pop hits. Could country music and rap share the same stage at the same time? Malone was bound and determined to make it so.

Regarding that Gameday video from 1987 that previewed the SU-BC game, Syracuse would roll BC 45-17. Despite Beano's concerns.
