I swore this would not happen to me again this year, but I went ahead and allowed myself to become optimistic about the OFFENSE this fall. Reading the quotes about the new OC's system, thinking about the Sr QB and OLine being healthy, the skill guys like Erv, Broyld, Ishmael, the experienced RBs and on and on.

I think about how easily the offense seemed to move the ball at times last year between the 20s in spite of all the injuries and the awful playcalling and think there has to be talent there at the skill positions. This happens to me every year since the late 90s... it's gotta pan out one of these years....

Just based upon Hunt and a potentially healthy OL alone, I think we can expect vastly improved results.

Hopefully Lester proves that he has the chops as well.

Becaue those three things will go a long way towards our program getting back to bowl eligibility--perhaps more than any other factors.

My name is Toga and I have an SU Football optimism problem.

Same here. And I will remain optimistic until proven otherwise. I was disappointed with last season's results. However, being a realist, I acknowledge that the team suffered injuries beyond hope, the D was it's usually very good self (a Shafer trademark!); our leaders on the field are back, and our backups have experience under their belts. We go bowling, barring serious injuries again.

Hi, Toga.

Please take off those Orange colored glasses, you won't need those here.

Personally, I've never understood the point or appeal of being a pessimistic fan.

Realistic? Sure. But you can be both an optimist and a realist, and it's a lot more fun to hope for the best with the teams you root for than it is to be sure of the worst.

Just make sure your original baseline is the one good drive per game trend that we ended the last 3 games with last year, and rest assured we'll be better. How much better is totally left to your own expectations. But definitely better.

despite all the injuries and the coaching mess and despite finishing 111th in yards per play, we can at least feel good that we're 45% in yards per play than wake forest was

wake is incredibly bad

VT was only 0.4% better

Virginia was only 3% better

Some people have a compulsive need to be "right", and you're much more likely to be "right" rooting for doom than a national title when it comes to SU. But very few people on this site are "pessimistic fans" -- by definition most people of that nature wouldn't spend oodles of time in a place like this.

Most people here have just been worn down over the past 15 years so we're more "show me" then "we'rez gonna be the greatest!!11!!!1!". But that's to be expected.

how were we when you remove all the plays inside our 20 and outside the other 20? just red zone plays alone have to have skewed our numbers beyond belief. of we do nothing else but improve by 25% in the red zone would that make a difference? just 2 huge plays against FSU and Maryland where we not only didnt score but allowed points. can we remove those plays this year? that has to be doable

red zone was a problem that eventually became moot when we stopped getting to the red zone

we were 109th in red zone attempts and 127th in red zone td conversion percentage. so we stunk at getting to the red zone and we stunk worse when we got there

100th ranked team in red zone td percentage was over 10 percentage points better (30% improvement)

going from 40% to 50% gets you 25 more points, which isn't nothing but doesn't move them much up the scoring rankings

Need to be middle of the pack in red zone attempts and middle of the pack in red zone TD conversion and we'll be good to go. Would that be unrealistic? Not sure where you're pulling this from so I can't look up myself.

127th?! How many 1-AA teams ranked better than us?!

I only gave this one like because that's all that's allowed.

I like to consider myself an optimistic realist. Only time I think I dropped the optimistic part was from 2006-2008. I even gave him a chance that first year :)

I am not a Hunt fan and am not convinced he can throw the ball in the ocean. However, I have to admit that he's been busting his ass getting ready for this season.

another reason for optimism which might be wishful thinking. hunt struggled throwing the ball after he just ran the ball in games last year. perhaps he's in better shape and perhaps lester won't try to run plays so fast.

if you're going to go super fast, you probably need a lighter QB who doesn't run as much as hunt did

i still like no huddle, just take it a little slower with hunt in there and hope he's worked on that. worst case scenario, adapt play calling to more runs after hunt's scrambled

We will improve this year. How can we not? About as bad as it can get last year. Just not sure how much the O will improve. One side of me says it was Lester who directed the offense for most of last season and it was inept. The other side of me loves Lester, the person, is cheering for him, and likes some of the things Lester has begun to stress in the off-season. We shall see what transpires.
