have anyone of you fantastic human beings ever disputed a charge by a merchant that you never authorized? this company charged $2,000 on my card for something i was going to buy so i gave him my cc # to hold on to the items at a discounted price than he went ahead and charged me when he said he wouldnt. anyone know how long a dispute takes?

It depends ... when you get the BBB involved sometimes you can get the charge revoked by the person who charged you but in many instances they could care less until you threaten legal action and act upon it. Otherwise it is a pain. I had an instance that was never resolved (less than $500) and one that took six months (over $3000). I didn't bother dealing with the credit card company I just pretty much handled it otherwise. The CC companies were useless trying to get their help.

I opened this thread with a certain amount of dread. Think Gottlieb.

I have once. Long story short, I got my ~$20 back and then realized I was wrong and the charges were correct.

oops.

call up your credit card company and dispute it. most will take away the charge immediately. some will make you fill out paperwork though

This is easy stuff. Every major credit card co. has a fraud dept. Call them, report the fraudulent charge--you'll need the appropriate reference numbers--they'll place a hold on the charges to your account and send paperwork to the merchant to verify the charge. The process can take weeks but in the interim you are protected against the charge posting on your account until the merchant can prove the charge is valid and you can prove you do not have the merchandise. FYI, signed affidavits are part of the deal.

BBB is worthless. They don't fix anything; they are a member organization.

Key question - did you take delivery of the goods ? If not, I don't see how they can charge you. You should be able to simply get the charges reversed by calling your credit card company.

Because of the size of the amount in dispute, though, they will likely mail you a dispute form that you have to complete and mail back to them. They send it to the merchant for a reply.

As I said, if you never took possession of the goods, they can't dispute the charge and you'll get your refund on your next credit card statement.

Let this be a lesson to all of you who try to turn away a high class escort at the door.

matt, i agree about the bbb.. although i have resolved issues through them when the retailer was a member.. but to limited success.. i am curious though.. not all cc companies i would say are as compliant as the process you explained should works. i am on the busines side of mortgage credit.. and work with debt counselors daily.. i wish i could say all of them worked that quickly..

ac.. how long ago did they process the charge? does the company have a return policy meaning they refund if no delivery of the goods or is this more like an individual transaction? i only ask due to knowing how long it can take a cc company to handle the disputed charge.. some will handle it quickly as matt alludes too and others might blow you off

it was processed during the past week. it was for vending machines i was going to buy. i was going to buy 6 so i gave him ny cc # to hold on to the lower price he was offering until i got the money to buy them all but then i changed my mind and im buying different machines instead. but he said he wouldnt charge my card and did and wants to still sell me less vending machines instead of 6, guy doesnt get it. they delivered nothing to me , so why is he trying to charge me $2,000, makes no sense.

I gave a bar in Korea my CC so I could open a tab. They started running my card for $10000 and kept going down lower numbers until they hit an amount that would go through. I woke up the next morning, saw that I was broke and called the bank. They said that they were just about to call me, and I had my money back within a few hours. Crazy Koreans

You should be fine, then. Just be sure to let the credit card co know that you never took possession or delivery of the goods.

Did you give card info via phone or online? And did you give him the 3 digit PID # on the back of your card?

It is against credit card issuing bank policies for merchants selling physical goods to charge your card BEFORE shipping the goods - period.

If they charged your card and shipped nothing, it's a pretty simple case for their fraud department. They are in violation of merchant policy guidelines by doing that.

Oh, and for that amount of $$$, they are probably going to get fined by Visa, MC, etc. for violating that policy.

Over phone and i didnt give him the 3 digit code.

You're golden. If anyone ever tries to charge you online or on the phone without those numbers just call your card company and dispute the charges.
