Creighton taking future Syracuse head coach to the Woodshed

Maybe I've caught Nova on a couple of bad nights - today and recently against St. John's - but I don't see why some are enthralled with them. They look very ordinary to me. They'd finish in 4th or 5th if they were in the Big 12 or B1G.

I think it's pretty clear Gonzaga and Baylor are a cut above the rest this year. Probably Ohio State is in the next tier. I think it just might be Gonzaga's year.

The fact that Baylor and Gonzaga are the best teams in the country is enough alone for me to dismiss all of the doomsayers who act like we’ll never be good again once JB retires. This isn’t CFB. Any good program with a good coach can win.

Buddy aspires to be a player who averages 10.4 ppg?

Ballock 10.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.0 spg
Boeheim 14.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.4 spg

I am glad Buddy is deciding who to aspire to instead of you.

I can't believe I'm wading into this, but c'est la vie:

If we are only using this year's stats:

Buddy: 38% FG, 31% 3PT, 13.0 PER, 47% TS, 45% eFG, .078 WS/40, BPM 0.5, FGA/game 14.6
Ballock: 46% FG, 39% 3PT, 13.9 PER, 61% TS, 61% eFG, .123 WS/40, BPM 5.5, FGA/game 8.3

If Buddy was as efficient as Ballock, it would be amazing. Aspirations aside.

61% TS. That’s seems pretty good.

I’ll take the guy who averages more points, steals and assists over the guy who doesn’t. Especially given he plays in the ACC and gets the best or second best defender the other team has every game he plays.

Ballock is the fifth leading scorer for his team for a reason.

OK.

I'll stick with my strategy of the guy who can make more points with less shots, has higher defensive metrics and, in general, was rated higher coming into college that is helping his team to a currently top 20 ranking.

Do you really think Creighton's coach would do a 1 for 1 trade for Ballock for Buddy? Of course not. But here we are, arguing this point, based on volume stats when Buddy gets to shoot the most out of anyone on our team because of his last name.

I think there is a place for advanced analytics but like anything, you have to do more than look at a few numbers to make an informed judgement.

Ballock plays the most minutes on the team but is fifth in average scoring. You know what that tells me?

That he has some major holes in his game that limit his ability to get off shots, get assists and steals. To his credit, the stats indicate understands his limitations and accordingly does not shoot much. I have never watched him play but the stats say he is useless unless he is presented with a wide open jumper.

You have 5 guys with severe limitations like this guy and you know what you have? A team that doesn’t win a game.

Like I said, there is a reason he plays the most minutes and is fifth in scoring on this team.

Of course his coach would prefer a player is capable of so much more than Ballock will ever dream of doing. A player with only one skill can easily be taken away, which is why he can’t score much. His problems getting steals and assists are further proof of his limitations.

We aren't going to agree, and that's fine. Honestly, we fundamentally view this situation totally differently.

wait...you’ve never watched him play?

No. Not a Creighton fan. I watch Syracuse and the ACC. That is about it.

i tried quickly to find an up to date ranking of conferences comparing the ACC to the Big East and failed. My guess is that the B1G and the B12 are well ahead of all other conferences.

No question the ACC is down this year. It isn’t very good. But the New Big East is down as well.

For the little I have seen of the New Big East, it looks like the teams are in general tougher and less talented than their ACC counterparts. The only head to head against better teams i know of off the top of my mind is that V Tech played Nova early and won in OT.

My guess is that the ACC is ranked higher. But with so few OOC games, it is really hard to compare conferences this season.

And yet, “you have to do more than look at a few numbers to make an informed judgment.” Mind you, none of that includes actually watching him ever play a wink either, while additionally concluding as well that he has “major holes in his game.” ;)

Surprisingly, in the NET conference rankings, the ACC is #3 after the B1G and SEC. B12 is 4, and the NBE is 5.
