Has JB ever said something like this about an uncoming game against a "cupcake": "<instert cupcake team here> isnt very good. we should win by at least 20."

Its funny how he comes up with new ways to praise upcoming bad teams. Tulane went 13-17 last year and somehow jb says "players can learn alot in a tough year." lol, yea they can learn how to lose alot of games. Then after we win by 25 he'll say in the postgame "that team is good they just missed alot of shots (maybe cuz they suck?). if they would have made a few more shots it would have been a tougher game. " DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH

And yes, ill take the blame if tulane somehow pulls off the shocker.

I'm not sure you can call any 11-1 team a "cupcake".

We should win the game fairly easily, but this won't be like playing some bad 2-9 team from the NorthEast Conference. Those are what I would classify as "cupcakes".

True Tulane's schedule hasn't been exactly ripe with overpowering teams ... but they still come in with an 11-1 record against the #1 team in the country that played just 2 days ago. We're favored -20 1/2 (or -20) ... but the Tulane team is going to come in with something to prove ... they are really gonna be up for the game. SU had better not get caught looking ahead to the holidays ... remember Cleveland State or Bucknell?

JB (or any coach) would never say, "Boy, this team we are about to play really sucks and we should win by 50 or 60". Bad etiquette along with giving the other team a whole bunch of ammunition and motivation ... I could see that statement on their lockers. And there are always positives you can find for any team.

Not only don't you want to give the opponent bulletin board material - you never want to send your team the message that all they have to do is to show up and a win is guaranteed. I have to believe that one of the most difficult aspects of being a college coach is to constantly get your team to focus for every game. If a coach gives college kids an excuse for thinking, "why should I bust my ass by giving 110% when if I play at half speed we still win" he will very likely have planted the seeds for an upset.

The only truly horrible team we've played this year was Colgate. Hence the seemingly rediculous #8 SOS and #1 RPI.

Dammit I really thought this thread was about cupcakes.

!

Geno might.

I dunno about that, Eastern Michigan is worse in the Pom rankings, and Albany isn't much further ahead.

The one thing I'll say for our schedule is it seems to have gotten better on the back end; we don't play nearly as many really really bad teams. In 2003, we played 4 teams ranked 230 or worse in the Pom rankings, plus Binghamton and Canisus, which were 194 and 195. We have 3 truly terrible teams this year, but everyone else is 175ish or better. In 2004, we had 6 teams 200 or worse. And I seem to remember it was even wrose before 2003, though I could be wrong about that.

After the first two games of the season, Syracuse really hasn't been facing cupcakes other than EMU. Syracuse has mostly been playing against teams with decent records. I know records don't really state too much about a team, but at the very least it does tell us that we cannot underestimate them.

Albany 1-1
Colgate 1-1
Vtech- 3-0
Standford 5-0
EMU 4-2
Florida 5-1
Marshall 5-1
GW 4-4
Nc State 6-3
Bucknell 7-4

Due to an interesting turn of events. Syracuse has yet to face a team with a losing record at the time the game was being played. This is great for Boeheim because he can keep his players level-headed by reminding them that they are playing quality opponents who cannot be underestimated.

Somewhere a couple weeks ago I saw an ESPN "Mid Major" Top 20 (or something to that effect) and Tulane was ranked #1 on that list.

Yes I saw that too. It will be interesting to see the kind of game the #1 mid major brings to the dome tonight. I say we beat them like a circus monkey.

Yeah, I am not sure I buy that. Like I said. they're 114th in the Pom rankings. They have beaten one team ranked better than 250 in the Pom Rankings. (Georgia Tech). They have a pom SOS of 345. Guess how many teams there are in D1?

I never know what to think with these mid majors. Marshall was supposed to be really good, they stunk against us. Bucknell made the tourny last year and returned 4 starters and are picked to win their league this year, and we were up double digits the entire game. My theory, at least in recent years, is when we're really good, we beat all these teams easily whether theyre good or not. When we're a bubble team, we lose 1 or 2 of them.
