'Cuse commit waiting for NCAA approval

We need help at the position, he looks fast and athletic. Let's hope he makes it here! :)

Any idea when he actually committed? And how old is he?
My guess from reading the article is 23-24... He enrolled in 2006 when he was around 18, and then started playing again in 2010. Probably closer to 24

He doesn't look that fast to me but does look like he's physically ready.

Was my guess as well. Hope he gets cleared. Physically ready from day 1 and some maturity that may pay off big time in the locker room.

21 days to a year? That's an awful wide range. The NCAA is useless. Also, how can the Nassau coaches not be fully aware of eligibility requirements?

Doesn't look slow either. Has good size and comes off blocks real well and is tenacious. Hopefully this works out for him as he may be able to help.

How did Chris Weinke enroll at FSU at the age of 26?

This is after playing pro baseball for 6 years.

The clock starts once you enroll, ehcih he did, Weinke and others like him didn't enroll before baseball

He never enrolled at a college. Clock doesn't start until you enroll and I believe (it used to be this way) attend your first class.

He was there 3 weeks. Probably during training camp. He might have been gone before the season even started.

This deserves a waiver.

He seems to get around the OT's pretty well.
in article on TOS he says he's 250lbs and was clocked at 4.47 in the forty

also says he's 3 to play 2 and graduate in December

amazing that the NCAA could clear Cam Newton in a couple of days and yet a common sense situation like this will likely be really drawn out and cost him further delays to his college career and getting on with his life

It only took a couple of days for Mr. Newton's check to clear. ;)

Just like Tyrone Albright in basketball. It's like the NCAA wants to discourage kids that have the light bulb come on later than their peers.

google "ncaa hardship waiver rule"

6th link down links to a downloadable powerpoint (sorry can't link from work) which gives some good info

slide 22 has to do specifically with Extreme Financial Difficulties. If there was a specific event that lead to him having to quit school to work then he should be able to clear NCAA guidelines.

Anybody remember Ed (The Postman) Spriggs at Georgetown pre Patrick Ewing? Wasn't he like 25 or 26 when Thompson saw him at the Post Office and got him to enroll?

heres the full article:

Although very few people know it, defensive end Bryan Johnson (Hempstead, N.Y./Nassau Community College) has committed to play football at Syracuse. Now he just needs the NCAA's stamp of approval.

Johnson's situation is an unusual one. He enrolled at Nassau Community College in 2006 but left school after three weeks so he could get a job and help out his family financially. He re-enrolled and began playing football at Nassau Community College in 2010.

Johnson said he will need a waiver to play for Syracuse, because the NCAA gives student-athletes five years to complete a four-year athletic career. The clock started ticking for Johnson when he began college in 2006.

“Because I started school back then and then left, my eligibility is messed up,” Johnson said. “Syracuse is helping me with this. They sent a waiver to the NCAA, and if I get the waiver, it would allow me to play right away. I'd have three years to play two. They told me it could take 21 days to a year.”

Johnson, 23, said he received a scholarship offer from Syracuse in August. He also has offers from Arizona State (before Dennis Erickson was fired), Akron and Miami. His latest offer came from Miami three weeks ago.

“None of the schools knew about my situation when they offered, and I didn't find out about it until [Syracuse] reviewed my transcript,” Johnson said. “My coaches at Nassau weren't clear on the [NCAA] rules.”

Syracuse's need to bring in a defensive end grew when defensive end Chandler Jones decided to forgo his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

Johnson said he feels a sense of loyalty to Syracuse, because the school is helping him with his eligibility issue.

“Definitely,” he said. “It's where I want to be.”

He looks fast on the film when the RBs could not get around him and it looked like the RB had the angle more than once. With offers from Miami, AZ ST., and of course Akron, looks like he could make an immediate impact.

This wont end well, Syracuse's history of getting help from the NCAA or a favorable decision is pretty bleak. Got my fingers crossed but I would expect bad news when we finally get in August or god knows when.

you would like to think fact he never went on and played would mean something.. this is was the schools are here for, to improve the kids quality of life. if he isn't eligible he probably doesn't get into a school like SU now.
