'Cuse commit waiting for NCAA approval

Brandon Weedon (OK. State QB) played pro baseball from 2002-2006 and turned 28 in October.

This wont end well, Syracuse's history of getting help from the NCAA or a favorable decision is pretty bleak. Got my fingers crossed but I would expect bad news when we finally get in August or god knows when.

Doomed, I tell you, we're doomed.

Yeesh.

heres the full article:

Although very few people know it, defensive end Bryan Johnson (Hempstead, N.Y./Nassau Community College) has committed to play football at Syracuse. Now he just needs the NCAA's stamp of approval.

Johnson's situation is an unusual one. He enrolled at Nassau Community College in 2006 but left school after three weeks so he could get a job and help out his family financially. He re-enrolled and began playing football at Nassau Community College in 2010.

Johnson said he will need a waiver to play for Syracuse, because the NCAA gives student-athletes five years to complete a four-year athletic career. The clock started ticking for Johnson when he began college in 2006.

“Because I started school back then and then left, my eligibility is messed up,” Johnson said. “Syracuse is helping me with this. They sent a waiver to the NCAA, and if I get the waiver, it would allow me to play right away. I'd have three years to play two. They told me it could take 21 days to a year.”

Johnson, 23, said he received a scholarship offer from Syracuse in August. He also has offers from Arizona State (before Dennis Erickson was fired), Akron and Miami. His latest offer came from Miami three weeks ago.

“None of the schools knew about my situation when they offered, and I didn't find out about it until [Syracuse] reviewed my transcript,” Johnson said. “My coaches at Nassau weren't clear on the [NCAA] rules.”

Syracuse's need to bring in a defensive end grew when defensive end Chandler Jones decided to forgo his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

Johnson said he feels a sense of loyalty to Syracuse, because the school is helping him with his eligibility issue.

“Definitely,” he said. “It's where I want to be.”

23 year old, 6-4, 250, 4.5 40. ASU and UM offers. Get 'er done.

you would like to think fact he never went on and played would mean something.. this is was the schools are here for, to improve the kids quality of life. if he isn't eligible he probably doesn't get into a school like SU now.

...and especially the fact that he stopped going to school to get a job to help his family financially. Fingers are crossed!

LOL yeah cause our history with the NCAA screams this will be no problem/issue.
:bang:

I don't think enough is being made of this. Good offers, measurables, position of need. Our recent JUCOs, especialy from NCC, have been solid as a group.

Being hard doesn't = this won't end well.

Just saying if we need to rely on the NCAA to make a smart timely decision that will benefit Syracuse it will likely take A. Forever and B. Will be a result we wont like. Thats not opinion its a fact from ou prior issues, took months for Eskridge to be cleared and I think Cody Jamieson is still waiting.

I have said since early November I think this kid should come here . Glad we offered him early and got his loyalty. My guess, is he starts if comes along with Micah Robinson. I would love him and Chan but oh well... thats life.

He looks fast on the film when the RBs could not get around him and it looked like the RB had the angle more than once. With offers from Miami, AZ ST., and of course Akron, looks like he could make an immediate impact.

I hate it when articles say "Miami". Do we know for a fact it is Miami, FL and not Miami, Oh?

If it is Miami, Fl they've had a recent string of decommits . Charlie Strong got the last one and he's not done. Another UM commit is now headed to LVille for an official visit.

Miami also currently has 27 committments and they just offered Johnson 3 weeks ago,.

My sense is that people here think Strong is a very good recruiter, while we have serious deficiencies on staff and need to hire a couple superstar recruiters. So at this moment, our class is higher-rated than Louisville's on TOS. They have one more 3-star guy, we have one more 4-star guy.

Imagine if we had some actual recruiters on staff, heh.

Looks like he'd be good against the run as well. Ready to contribute right away. Hope he makes it here .

Hope this goes well. I really think this guy could range from special team stud and situational player, to dynamic playmaker and steadying force in the a locker room that could certainly use it.

if anyone could tell the younger kids in the locker room not to take football/school for granted it would be this guy

We did ok with the Taj Smith decision. It didn't matter in the end as he went to the pros early.

It's 8 months before the season starts. Eskridge was eventually cleared right, when did the issue pop up.
