'Cuse Tied for 12th Nationally

in fewest penalties per game at 4.25. Last year they finished 104th and it certainly seemed like a lot of those penalties came at the worst possible time. Hoping to see this trend continue in the right direction as Syracuse can't afford to give opposing teams free yardage.
i was thinking during the game, what is the optimal number of penalties. obviously LSU kept us hanging around with penalties. but part of me thinks that 4.25 is too low.

if you go your whole life without a speeding ticket, you've wasted a lot of time driving too slow

oregon and baylor got so many penalties last year (lots of plays, I know)

While it seems we are moving the ball better this year, lack of penalties is obviously having an effect as well. Last year, a false start or an illegal formation that would turn 1st and 10 into 1st and 15 would automatically get Riley over in front of the net to warm up the leg.

Baylor and Oregon should start at 1st and 20 every time anyway just to level the playing field. Syracuse has nowhere near the offensive capability of either of those teams that you mentioned and just can't afford to gift opponents yardage and field position.

The only penalty I would like to see committed with any regularity at this point is PI. Julian had the right idea when he got burnt deep on Saturday, Just need to make sure the receiver doesn't catch the ball...

yeah, all depends on the kind of penalties. i don't mind 15 yarders if they're hitting hard and no one gets killed. they need to teach whigham how to interfere. if that's what you need to do, then really do it

They need to teach Whigham to get his head around first.

It’s the false start and holding penalties that kill you, these have to be at zero.

Pass interference penalties I can live with, they’re usually preventing a big play and they’re only 15 yarders.

I can also live with a couple of over aggressive defensive penalties (that don’t involve head hunting).

The underthrown ball can be a DB's worst nightmare sometimes as well. He's probably so worried about keeping up with the kid, sees the underthrown ball and it turned into a freaking mess. Unlike the TD where he was flat out beat, the coverage was there on the big completion until the underthrow and then it all went out the window
