That was almost the first Super Bowl. Lamar Hunt, (H.L.'s son), had founded the AFL when he could not get an NFL franchise and put a team owned by him in his hometown of Dallas called the Texans. The NFL moved to block them by founding the Cowboys. For there years they competed with each other. The Texans were a bigger success on the field. They won the the third AFL title in the second sudden-death overtime game ever played over the Houston Oilers:
But the NFL Cowboys won the battle of the box office and Hunt finally moved his team to Kansas City. The Chiefs won the 1966 AFL title over the two tiem defednign champion Bills:

The Cowboys had their first great team and met the Packers for the NFL title. Everybody remember the 1967 Ice Bowl game in green Bay but the game the two teams played the previous year in Dallas was a superior football game. The temperature was so cold that Don Meredith's vocal cords froze and he was unable to give the signals, having to use ahnd signals. The field was a sheet of ice. Nobdy could perform to their full capabilities in '67. In '66 they could and the result was a great game:

Without that fumbled kickoff, the Cowboys might have won and faced their former Dallas rivals in the Super Bowl. The teams were similar. The Cowboys were 10-3-1 , (in the regular season), and out-scored their opposition 445-239. The Chiefs were 11-2-1 am out-scored their opposition 448-276. The Cowboys gained 368 yards per game, (152 on the ground and 216 in the air). The Chiefs gained 365 yards a game, (162 rushing and 203 passing). The Cowboys were a bit better on defense, giving up 254 yards per game, (84r, 170p). The Chiefs gave up 284 (97r, 187p). Both teams had a reputation for being innovate, introducing modern football, with multiple formations, more passing and deception, (but both got beaten by the more traditional Packers).
Their line-ups were so star studded I can still remember the name. The Cowboys had Don Meredith at QB, a good running back in Don Perkins and a versatile on in Dan Reeves. Bob Hayes and Frank Clarke could take you deep. Tony Lisico, Dave Manders and Ralph Neely anchored the line. The great Bob Lilly dominated on defense. Jethro Pugh was just a rookie that season but George Andre and Willie Townes stuck int he mind. Chuck Holey, Lee Roy Jordan and Dave Edwards were a great set of linebackers. Cornell Green and Mel Renfro were all-pro defensive backs.
KC had Len Dawson at QB, Curtis McClinton and Mike Garrett running the ball. The great Otis Taylor was the star receiver but Dawson looked to Chris Burford for first downs. Tight end Fred Arbansas as all AFL. Each line was anchors by a man mountain: 6-6 292 Jim Tyrer on offense and 6-7 287 Buck Buchanan on defense. But the best defensive lineman may have been the Bob Lilly-like Jerry Mays. Bobby Bell was an all-time great at linebacker and Sherrill Headrick and E. J. Holub were very good as well. Fred "The Hammer" Williamson was at cornerback but the best D-back was safety Johnny Robinson.
It would have been a heck of a game. And, because the teams have not changed their uniforms, it would have looked just like today's game.
