I’ve lived all my life in North Syracuse. MY mother taught agt the High school in the 60’s and 70’s. North Syracuse, (as it was then: no ‘Cicero’) had the largest school district in the area and, I believe, at one time in the state but we could never seem to beat out Jamesville DeWitt in football. Then in the 70’s the citizens of the of the district started voting down budgets, one after the tother and kept the school system on austerity for years. We had one moment of glory with Mandel Robinson, (brother of local TV anchor Jackie Robinson), who shown bright enough to get awarded #44 when he attended SU, where he was a disappointment and eventually transferred to Wyoming. For years afterward we were a complete irrelevancy in football and most other sports. Meanwhile our closest geographical rival, Liverpool high School, was approving budgets and emphasizing athletics – and football. They became a powerhouse. One year the newspaper listed local high schoolers who had received athletic scholarships to college and Liverpool had 72 and North Syracuse had 3.

For a time Cicero, (which opened in the early 70’s) and North Syracuse had separate teams but eventually the schools and teams were combined into Cicero-North Syracuse, (and the old North Syracuse High School became a Junior High or “middle school”). That didn’t improve the results on the football field all that much, even though the field at CNS was perhaps the best in the area. But in the last few years, things have changed remarkably. The most obvious change was that former Henninger Coach Dave Kline was hired to coach the team in 2016. But I’m sure many things have been done behind the scenes to give him a chance to build the success we have been having. I thought I’d document his achievements thusfar, using information for this site:

Dave is now 4-0 in re-matches in the Section II playoffs with teams that beat him durigngtnhe regular season. He’s also 4-0 against Section 4 champions. Now if he can only get by those big, bad teams from the Rochester and Buffalo areas and get to the state finals!

I graduated from NS in '64. My freshman year we easily had the best team in the county but the head coach was Herloski. We had a huge line that was college size and the two fastest sprinters in the county in Terry Pratt and Gary Merritt. They held the county records for the 100 and 220.

Herloski was replaced with Gobble Gobble Gates who had played line with the Bills. Dave Giusti's younger brother, Frank, became the QB.

My sister taught a lot of years at the CNS.

Kline has elected to resign and retire after having disputes with the school district over the last three years, ending with the suspension of his star quarterback just before the sectional final. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain the current level of success which was unprecedented. I doubt it.

C-NS Football Coach Dave Kline stands by his decision to resign

Don't know the guy, don't know the backstory, but to me he quit on forty other kids.
I can't wait to hear how the parents eventual law suit will go over. My guess is the judge laughs hysterically and throws it out.

It was the threat of a lawsuit that made this public correct? Who contacted dot com? I can't imagine the school did.

So he was suspended for nothing or something they won't take responsibility for? CNS is a pretty large school, I highly doubt if it had gotten that far he was suspended for nothing. Seems like they didn't like the punishment but won't take responsibility for what was done. Par for the course. Play the mental health card, blame covid, etc. Parents are part of the problem too, who would take the time to actually sue a school district for being suspended from a dumb football game. A game which they weren't going to win anyway! ( bias there)

The kid 100% broke the rules. The mom even admits it in her text to the news. The suspension was warranted. The parents are upset about some due process stuff. Now that many of us who were good high school athletes are older, its so cringy to see how parents in 2023 behave about a silly HS football suspension, especially considering he actually broke the rule.
agreed, whole thing is dumb. Coach, kid and parents look foolish and will realize it when they look back on it years from now. the coach should have finished the season and moved on. Parents should just walk away
