From yesterdays presser it sounds as if the team is starting two a days today. There is a closed practice this morning. Fan Fest/Practice starts today at 3:00. In the mean time here is a little something to put you in the mood... "an oldie but a goodie". I think OE would approve.

"I kind of, not regret it, but I thought, 'Man, I've been playing receiver all my life,'" Winfield said. "It was hard to switch over, but right before practice started, I was happy about it. I just had an open mind about it and was ready to go help the team."
Through two practices, Winfield has impressed the coaching staff with his quick learning curve. And with one second-string cornerback spot up for grabs — Julian Whigham, Brandon Reddish and Wayne Morgan all return with experience playing corner — he has a legitimate chance to work his way onto the field and contribute right away."

HCSS...

"We're going to have a light practice in the morning so the kids are freshened up and we'll liven it up a bit over in the soccer stadium. They've got it lined, I saw it driving in this morning and I was juiced up because I know we're going to do some tackling on Saturday -- (smiling) hopefully not too many missed tackles -- but we're going to do some blocking and tackling and that'll be a blast for the kids."

That's Winfield the closest to us, looks like he is already getting some run with the second team defense.
From the SS PC, moving CW helps the team in two ways. First, he is a stud athlete and they put him in a place where he could shine. Because he is able to make that switch, it helps us fill that second 2 deep slot on the second team. This allows us to hold our true freshman out, develop there bodies from HS to D1 athletes, and give them a redshirt. If you watch the tape on the 59 team, they sight the fact that what made that team so special was the depth. That is what has hurt us the most in the last decade.

It is huge when your program is developing players so that it works like a conveyor belt with occasional studs jumping in the line over upperclassmen. If that is how the program is working, it means that the Sampson like studs (like Estime) are the rare true gems and not a product of having just average talent to beat out.

5 things to look out for with Syracuse scrimmaging at FanFest today. http://bit.ly/1sJwQCR

Kendall Moore missed practice with a sprained ankle on Friday, but Shafer said that he should be “full-go” for the FanFest scrimmage.
Terrel Hunt didn’t use any tight end often last season, and his most frequent tight end target, junior Josh Parris, is back for another season. But even Parris only had 13 catches for 90 yards last season with the now-graduated Beckett Wales behind him with 10 receptions. Saturday could show how the tight end spot fits into George McDonald’s fast-paced scheme.
The unit has been working with first-year positional coach Bobby Acosta after not having a defined leader last season.
3. Marqez Hodge at middle linebacker
Both senior outside linebacker Cameron Lynch and linebackers coach Clark Lea have said that Hodge is transitioning well to middle linebacker. Lea did add that while the footwork and positioning have come naturally to Hodge, the sophomore has to work on communication and pass protection, among other things.
With Lynch and senior Dyshawn Davis, both established seniors, on either side of him, Hodge will be granted the keys to the defense — a spot he’s been in just a handful of times with the Orange.
4. Freshmen threats
Shafer has been raving about the newest crop of freshmen since the start of camp, and said Friday that we could see them at the end of the scrimmage.
First-year running back Ervin Phillips has been a particular talking point for Shafer, who noted Friday that George Morris II and Devante McFarlane may be looking over their shoulders. He’s also mentioned Jamal Custis, Adley Enoicy and Steve Ishmael, all high-profile recruits who could push to see the field this season.
Senior Jarrod West said on Wednesday that when the freshmen learn to play without thinking too much that it will be “scary.” The athleticism that has been discussed throughout camp could be on display toward the end of Saturday’s scrimmage.
5. Running back playing time
With Jerome Smith departing for the NFL and Prince-Tyson Gulley staying for a fifth season, it would seem that Gulley is the surefire feature back. But the Orange has a lot of options aside from its most seasoned one, and Saturday will be a first look at how it plans to balance them.
After Gulley, senior power back Adonis Ameen-Moore has garnered praise from teammates and coaches, and Morris and McFarlane were both explosive in flashes last season. Phillips has been making waves too. Even with a peak into the offense, how McDonald and running backs coach DeAndre Smith plan to cycle through the backs won’t really be apparent until Syracuse’s opener against Villanova on August 29.

So, who's going to post FanFest scrimmage happenings for us out-of-towners?
