Day Four Spring Football Practice 3/1/16 7:30

help me understand something...I never really followed spring practices before so I am not sure how other coaches run them. Now that I am following these practices I keep hearing how the tempo is greater and they are getting in way more reps/plays etc. Knowing that the total practice time is the same...what are they doing different? Wouldn't you want as many reps as possible...was there a lot of standing around before or did they work on different things?

There's a reason they needed a new S/C coach. This entire offense is based on speed, not just fast players, but fast coaches, fast calls, etc. You confuse and wear down defenses. Babers has stated that practice itself is part of the conditioning to run this system. Some coaches have stated they don't want to burn the guys out, or want to play a ball-control style offense so you practice the tempo you play at.

even if you play a slow tempo offense you would think you would still want to get in as many reps as possible so that the plays are ingrained in their heads, get the timing down, etc. If you are running twice as many reps in practice I would think that would greatly improve your chances of running that play correctly in a game.

to me I believe it is just the way the practice is run. We went through I coaching change when I played in college. Coach A didn't have a lot of emphasis in getting from station to station quickly in practice. Guys would get a drink, and BS on their way over to the next drill and what have you. Coach B came in and that was all different. Sprint from one station to the next, no standing around...basically got rid of any idle time. There was something being learned all the time.

So I believe that could be where a lot of the extra reps are coming from, more efficiency during practice.

Sounds like a no brainer to me. They aren't allowed that many practices so you might as well utilize every second of what you have.
