Class of 2024 DB/WR Willy Love (NJ) Portal to Temple

Coaches must see through what Dohn is doing.
After listening to our signing day presser, that’s completely correct. They don’t really care about rankings, they care about what they see and size/measurables. Dino did better than previous staffs at grabbing more P4 sized guys, but Fran’s doing much better at Dino at that.

For example, Kerr the frosh DB who made a huge play at Cal and became a starter was a non ranked recruit from CT. Fran & staff clearly have an eye for talent greater than anything we have seen. It did worry me the lack of stars originally in the 25 class, but now I truly don’t care and trust this staff fully on talent eval.

They may not have landed 4 stars but the class is made up of a majority of 88, 87 and 86 players. We would have lucky in the past to get one 88 or 87 player. That is how you build depth and win consistently.

This dude is a cautionary tale about how recruiting ratings / rankings can be manipulated.

He was initially considered a defensive back / safety / WR type, and Dohn elevated him to 4 stars when it appeared that he had Rutgers atop his list. But as time went on, and people got a more accurate gauge on his [limited] speed, it became clear that maybe he was an undersized linebacker, rather than a strong safety type.

For that position, his speed would be fine, but his size would be an issue. And then it appeared that he might flip to Syracuse, so Dohn cut his grade down to a low three star, which is probably about right -- but the changes weren't made either time for the correct reasons.

That, coupled with grades, landed him at Monmouth. Which in the big scheme of things, may have been the right level. 4-star... it was a joke.

I’m comfortable with their talent evaluation and they’re proving it out. I think in year’s past we often got this “trust the staff” stuff when it wasn’t earned or deserved.

Once you get to the second half of the top 200 its a crap shoot.

The sites really can only measure so many kids, once they beyond the 4-5 star guys they don't have resources to do a deep dive on those 1000s or others. And they really can't go into depth looking at what makes up the head of those kids.

You can watch film and see things but you need to talk and review kids much more to get what goes into making that next leep.

Like our guys said, they worked hard to find better film on some of these kids, you know recruiting sites are not doing that.

It’s also about readiness and people forget that. 5 stars are 5 stars because they’re theoretically ready to contribute now. They have a combination of the right size, build, speed, competition level and intelligence. 3 stars and below could become 5 stars it’s just they aren’t ready yet. So when a guy who was NR becomes a star player 3 years later and everyone says, the star system sucks. No, the star system was technically correct. He wasn’t a contributor in year one or two and who knows if he would.

I’m not saying the star system is an end all be all but it’s a determiner of potential readiness now as well as NFL capability.

Most importantly, especially for SU is having a guy who can do two things. Evaluate potential talent and then develop that talent.
