Dear Buffalo

A win is a win as they say. But sometimes a closer look tells the real story. Orange went to the charity stripe 18 times compared to just 2 for Bulls in 2nd half. 43-12 advantage in free throws for the Orange for the game. I’m sure the Bulls would be glad to host the Orange at their facility, but we all know that will not happen.

Buffalo probably should have fouled less. There’s not much incentive to play at UB’s gymnasium/cafeteria (does it have those sliding wall dividers like elementary schools?)

This was a brilliant ploy to create a rivalry for a program in need of a boost. Hatred ( Sports hatred) is what fuels rivalries. We know it well from the Hoya years. Problem is that Buffalo is just a tag along little brother type program right now that is years away from having any type of brand. But to be honest...I would feel a little extra fuel as a watcher the next time they might play.

Chaz thanks for joining. Tell your buddies at UB, you have some excellent players but they need to work hard to build a brand. One school is a national brand with fans nationwide. One is a Niagara Frontier brand. Be happy with St. Bona as your hated rival.

You must be new to shooty hoops: one of the benefits of the zone is the foul disparity when executed well.

BL: UB will never be a serious brand as long as the Bills and Sabres are in town. Hopefully they never leave, too. Many CNYers follow them as their pro teams.

Additionally, your FB stadium has a fatal flaw...it needs to dump the track and give it a tighter footprint. Your indoor practice facility is oddly juxtaposed against your high school stadium on steroids. Fortunately, you can actually build a recruit welcome center/donor center in-between the IPF and the field if you dump the track.

i was sitting courtside for a game against Rutgers. Devo and Douby spent the whole game talking about each other’s mother. It was funny as hell. When the game was over they gave each other a big hug.

Was that the Louie McCroskey game?

stepping stone university
no more fat checks until your asshat coach inevitably leaves for a better job

Gosh for a team that had devendorf running his mouth for years and years, this is so soft to be done with a team BC they were talking trash. Jeez

I don’t think the issue is that they were talking trash. It’s the trash they were talking.

Anybody who has played semi-serious ball or competitive pickup games knows there’s accepted trash talk and ridiculous, unaccepted trash talk.

Since JB has been coaching for a few years now, I’m not going out on a limb to assume Buffalo took it to a level they shouldn’t have. Probably cost them the game.

What I took from it too. I think the Covid was the tipping point. It very well could cause us to lose 2-3 games when they resume. It was a huge momentum killer.

A phyrric victory for sure.

What were they talking trash about? If they were talking trash about JB or Buddy, they should just have become members here at SyrFan, they would fit right in with many "fans" here.

This argument bodes well when we win. However, when we lose, many times I've seen it argued/cried here how the refs did us in, and mention of the free throw disparity as proof for those believing it. Even when many of those extra free throws that the opponent gets is paralleled with the zone's inherent weaknesses, creating many opportunities to get pounded on the glass allowing for 2nd and 3rd chances, etc. Often, many of those additional opportunities ends in putting the opponent on the charity stripe.

I think it would be difficult to argue that beating Buffalo was the result of executing our zone at a high level, considering they tallied 87 points in regulation.

hmmm. Not sure but it could have been. He was in the team and didn’t play much.

Couple of things:

1. Upthread, there was referenced made to UB's "young" coach. Whitesell is like 60 years old, and is not unexperienced - he was HC at Loyola-Chicago for a number of years. That said, his hire (at least locally) was seen as an uninspiring one, and he's really done nothing to change that view. At his age, the UB job is not a "stepping stone" position.

2. I don't particularly care for Oats. I think he's overly brash and smarmy. The post-game trash talk (in addition to running his mouth after the victory against SU, he did something similar after UB beat Arizona in the NCAAs) is douchey, and IMO, the UB players who were running their mouths probably took their cues from him. Of course, Whitesell did nothing to tame their behavior, so it's on him as well.

Regarding #1, Whitesell didn't coach vs SU. It was one of the assistants. Not sure if that matters to your overall point - just pointing that out.

True - I was thinking bigger picture.

I think Whitesell is a dime a dozen college assistant. I'd be surprised if UB doesn't cut ties within the next 3-4 years.

When we stop chucking threes and drive to the basket there's always going to be a big foul differential. We've lived on it for years.

if thats how JB feels, thats fine. What makes it soft is that he went public about it. I don’t think it’s a great look right now.
When would it be a great look? I’m just curious. No offense intended but aren’t you a UB grad, or am I thinking of someone else?

I am but I’ve always been a Syracuse unhinged lunatic diehard since I can remember.

it’s a worse look now coming off the loss from the last matchup, JB’s recent comments on Oats and the fact that Syracuse isn’t quite the national power it was in years past.

Just seems like a sour old guy talking down a program that pissed him off.

Maybe the trash talking was that bad? Who knows. Its not like A Yancy Gates UC Xavier brawl broke out.

It may have been that bad but there is bad blood between those two programs unlike us and UB

Even if SU doesn’t schedule UB for a couple of years, Boeheim will probably be gone after Buddy graduates. Scheduling them then won’t be an issue. As far as Boeheim being a sour old guy, well that’s been true for years.
