Has there ever been a coach who has underperformed more in the postseason than Mike Brey at Notre Dame? I wouldn't be surprised if he gets fired in the next year if he doesn't make the Sweet 16.

1 Sweet Sixteen appearance and no BET finals appearances for Brey in 13 seasons. No bueno.

Indeed. That was an easy 10-7 upset to pick.

I would be shocked if Brey was fired though. Their performance when it counts is truly pitiful, but IMO they are perceived by many as being much better than they are. Also, compared to much of the current ACC membership, ND looks pretty good.

pitt and dixon.

pitt and dixon.

Relative to seed, there may be an argument. Pitt has done way better in the tournament under Dixon than ND has under Brey though. Pitt in last 10 years (Dixon's tenure at Pitt)--11-9 in the tournament. Brey/ND in the last 10 years--2-5.

Prediction: Shaka Smart. Programs are going to be lining up to get him.

Would LOVE to see him at SU, if JB...

Hmmm in the NCAA they call:

far more moving screens which kills teams like Pitt, ND, Gtown and Marq who initiate much of their offense this way even if it just to get other guys in positions they want. This is also great for SU because its one of the key things BE teams get away with to enter the ball into the FT line area either by pass or penetration off of the high moving screen.

They call many more impedance fouls, which really kills teams like Pitt, Gtown and Marq who start their defense by grabbing and bumping ball handlers and cutters to keep them off the spots they want. This will also help SU because its like relief on the offensive end and we don't really play defense that way so its not a negative.

Finally if you have rebounding position and go flying sideways or someone crashes in over the top you generally get that call where its a free for all in BE play. This kills all these offensively challanged teams like Pitt, Marq, and Gtown who collect a large percentage of their points this way. It can get us into trouble as well because we are used to getting hammered and fighting back but we aren't as reliant on it especially if they cannot grab and hold our ball handlers in the first place.

Lville will have a game in the torney where they get called for all the crap they do when pressing and the other team shoots loads of FT's which will also slow down their press and transition game. That will be the game they need to survive but they have talent and two very quick gaurds who will benefit themselves from a tightly called game because they are usually bumbed and held constantly in the half court during BE play.

Its not really a surprise that only SU and Lville out of the BE will really have a chance to make some real noise and go far in the NCAA's. They are the only two teams that can consistently play good half court defense without fouling constantly and they also have offensive talent that gets HELD down in BE play. Both could get knocked out next game and Marq could get lucky another couple games but really SU and Lville are the only BE teams that have enough offensive talent to go with good the defense to be a real threat.

Butler had a 1/2 Dozen Moving picks against Bucknell (Right in front of th Ref) which weren't called :bang:

Yes and Montana started the game against us with their big guy committing two horible ones where he continued to shove Triche out toward half court and neither was called. That being said it is called much more often. Butler seems to be the only team allowed to thug it up in the NCAA tourney and get away with it on a regular basis, thus the reason I hate them so much.

I hope you are right about that. The big question for next year: Will things be very different in the ACC or will we find out that what was going on in the Big East is happening throughout college basketball, (slow down games, excessively physical play, etc.) To me basketball is about displaying athletic and basketball skills. Offense is about making great passes and great shots. Defense is about staying in front of people, playing the passing lanes, blocking shots and getting rebounds when they miss. Or at least it used to be.

Agree with you. Against the zone, teams rely so much on the high screen. If the refs don't call them when they're moving, it's a big disadvantage for SU. In the BE this season, we saw at most a handful of those calls.

I don't really think of ND as a hoops program that is good enough to expect NCAA tournament wins. I think Brey's a pretty good coach and usually does well to keep his team out of the NIT and the NIT sort of is their level IMO.

I think it will be much different. Pitt will be expossed. We will still be he redheaded step child for a while and get bad calls especially against the NC mafia teams but watch some ACC games, any of them, they call more fouls than the BE does and there is fall less contact. The really encoraging thing is that manyof the fouls are for impeeding offensive players which is what never gets called in the BE. Sure wen will pick up a bogus charge or two where guys fall flop because that call that in the ACC but even that has gotten better.
I hope I am right too, I know what I think I see but we won't know until we watch as much ACC as we have BE for a season or two. I am right with you on what basketball SHOULD be about.

Why does everyone in the BE have so much trouble with ND yet when you watch them in the NCAA they look sooo slow and plodding? Which is the optical illusion?

BE refs ruin the league is all. ND/Pitt/GT get overinflated with conference wins, get good seeds, and then flame out. Finesse teams like SU/Nova/Prov/St. Johns etc. get punished, miss the tourney or get bad seeds and have much harder roads in NCAA to advance. Lose/lose for conference.

Glad we got out.

Here's a thought: If every non-senior comes back then with the redshirt and 5 freshman we'll have 13 scholarship guys. There's speculation about who will go pro and who will be redshirted. But maybe JB will keep more players active and sue more because he expects more fouls to be called next year in the ACC than were called in the Big East. We may need 13 guys.

Possibly, although if Rak comes back I would imagine Obokoh redshirts since he would be behind Rak, DC2 and Baye. If everyone is back we would be absolutely loaded and deeeeeeep at every spot.

PG: MCW, Ennis
2G: MikeG, Cooney, Bus
SF: CJ, BJ, MikeG
PF: Jerami, Roberson, Rak
C: Rak, DC2, Baye, Obokoh

Yeah but MCW is not coming back and we will be thin at PG. We will be a freak injury to Ennis away from a disaster season, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Agreed! and the key to tje season will most likely be how ready Ennis is and how well we can develope someone else as a backup.

I think if MCW goes JB should get somebody out of the junior colleges as an alternative to Ennis- to be a starter but to be an emergency guy and so the freshman doesn't have to play 40 minutes.

relative to seed, georgetown has been historically bad the last 4 years.

1st team of all time to lose to a team seeded 5 below them 4 straight years.
