I took a deep dive into the stats to see how we compared to big, bad Florida State. So here is everything on this page: NCAA College Football FBS current team Stats | NCAA.com SCORING OFFENSE SU- 30 FSU- 34 TOTAL OFFENSIVE YARDS SU- 369 FSU- 483 OFFENSIVE FIRST DOWNS SU- 183 FSU- 215 OFFENSIVE RUSHING YARDS SU- 149 FSU- 212 OFFENSIVE PASSING YARDS SU- 220 FSU- 272 OFFENSIVE PASSING YARDS PER COMPLETION SU- 13 FSU- 14 OFFENSIVE PASSING EFFICIENCY SU- 146 FSU- 155 OFFENSIVE COMPLETION PERCENTAGE SU- 62 FSU- 62 OFFENSIVE 3RD AND 4TH DOWN PERCENTAGE SU- 39 FSU- 48 OFFENSIVE RED ZONE POINTS SU- 162in34 = 5 FSU- 189in44 = 4 SACKS ALLOWED SU- 28 FSU- 13 TACKLES FOR A LOSS ALLOWED SU- 53 FSU- 53 BLOCKED KICKS ALLOWED SU- 2 FSU- 0 (I’m assuming blocked kicks are placekicks and added them to blocked punts) SCORING DEFENSE SU- 18 FSU- 20 TOTAL DEFENSIVE YARDS SU- 307 FSU- 308 DEFENSIVE FIRST DOWNS SU- 154 FSU- 172 DEFENSIVE RUSHING YARDS SU- 141 FSU- 143 (We went from 95 rushing yards allowed per game to 123. Clemson gained 34% of the rushing yards we have surrendered.) We saw what happened vs. Notre Dame. - They have 8 fewer penalties but for more years, which means we have more ‘mental mistake’ penalties and they have more ‘physical mistake’ penalties. Edge to them. - 25% of their kickoffs have been returned compared to 38% of ours. Both teams are good at returning them, (27 yards per return for us: 25 for them). - Their punt return defense is better than ours, (4 yards vs. 8) and they return punts better than we do (14 vs. 6) - Our Red Zone defense is good (105/26) but theirs is exceptional (72/29). - We actually aren’t that far behind FSU in TFLs (50-56) and sacks (20-26) and both teams are even in TFLs allowed (53). But there is a significant difference in sacks allowed: (28 for us, 13 for them). Our advantages: - We are +6 in turnover margin compared to FSU. - We have three defensive touchdowns. They have none. - We’ve given up 18 fewer first downs. - Our defensive passing efficiency is better (115 vs. 124) Of course, our statistics are mostly from a time when we were reasonably healthy. Now we have problems at quarterback, in both lines, the secondary and a lot of guys who will play but will play hurt. Florida State no doubt has some problems, too, (it’s the 10th game), but I doubt they are as serious as ours.
