These excuses about being on the field too long I’m sick of. There was a 3 minute TOP difference for the game. The play that broke the back of the team was when we finally had momentum with our quick score in the 2nd half. We get them to 3rd and long and have King trapped for a big loss. He throws off his back foot a lazy little pop up that two guys fall down on and nobody else reacts to with all the time in the world. Guy catches it 4 yards short of the 1st down and easily jukes and runs through soft attempts at a tackle. I somehow convinced myself that we had turned the corner a little after the Pitt game. Not a chance.

Now ranked 116th in team defense.

For the life of me I have no idea why we don't line up in man and stop with these zone concepts ... in all reality they didn't have to throw a pass 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. We were gashed by TEs and running backs catching short dump offs. And frankly their TEs suck.

I thought the defense was totally unprepared yesterday. They had no answers for their counter plays or miss direction passes over the middle or out to the flats. Time and time again we were totally out of position. It was embarrassing to watch. It’s what they do and we seemed totally confused.
Maybe the SU coaches didn't bother to watch much GT game tape before coming up with their game "plan"?

In defense of the indefensible defense, after they put up a killer performance last week the offense barfed on it. I have to imagine they are facing difficulties with motivation and morale.

If only the defense could hold the other team to zero we might have a chance. Collins directed a 3 point first half; again.

The Collins run offense has put up 50 points, averaging 12.5 per game.

By quarter.

Q1 - 3, 0, 7, 3

Q2 - 0, 3, 0, 0

Q3 - 0, 0, 0, 7,

Q4 - 0, 13, 6, 6

The defense needs to be better and I wish it were top 10 but we're not beating anyone if we can't score.

Agreed.

Pitt is a perfect example.

The defense yielded 16 points.** We only scored 13, at home. Defense did their job, the offense didn't.

**And yes, I know that we lost 30-13. It isn't the defense's fault that Collins threw a pick on the third play of the game, giving Pitt the ball at aout the 10 yard line 90 seconds into the game, or that we gave up a punt return for a TD. Defense played well, and only yielded 16 points. When you do that, you have to find a way to outscore the opponent.

I continue to be perplexed that we wasted a Carney "game" on 1 play. I think it would have been better to use Villari to take a knee than use a game for 1 play--even for a TD that increases our lead from 59 to 66.

And then to use him against Pitt for, what, 7-8 plays?

I do NOT think that Fran should announce Carney as the starter this week. But I DO think that Carney needs to get the start against UNC to see what can be done. Let Rickie have the 4th quarter if we are down. That seems to be the only quarter that we move the ball anyway... let's see if Carney can get us more than 3-10 pts in 3 quarters of play.

The problem is that UNC's defense is pretty good. I am not sure that is a great first defense for Carney to face . ND and Miami on the road are tough tests to start a QB in as well. So I can totally see it being the RIckie show for 3 more games barring injury... with no ability to even TRY Carney because it wastes his redshirt year.

If so, realistically, having screwed this up so badly, Carney should probably just start the BC game no matter what as Game #3.

How about they hold them under 20? How about they just do enough that we don't walk out of the dome or turn off the TV at halftime because the game is essentially over? Is that at all possible from them?

I dont think anything is a waste for Carney. If Angelli is good next yr then he can RS then just as well hopefully

That would put us in the top 20 of P4 defenses and we'd still have lost all 4 games.

Honeslty, this is one of those times you just have to tip your hat. Haynes King played fantastic on Saturday. Made a lot of tough plays at big moments and excellent reads in their zone read offense. I also think Angeli would’ve lit up their secondary if he was healthy and playing. Would’ve been a close, but excellent football game.

You gotta stop this nonsense about wasting a redshirt. The goal is to recruit over the players on the team every year. If Luke Carney can help us this year, he plays. If he's great, he can start for the next three years and we'll find someone else later on. If he's the backup to Angeli next year, he can play in four games get that redshirt back. Football players get hurt and blocked on the depth chart... it works itself out. If you don't play him, he transfers either because he's not good enough or he's too good to ride the bench.

We're also not getting a bunch of no name 2 stars and praying they put on 30lbs and can play as juniors and seniors. QB takes more work to get up to speed but we're not sacrificing games to help us in 2029.

Wrong. Redshirts matter to somebody you hope to groom as a future starter. Players don't want to be mismanaged. Don't put him in for 1 play this game, 7 plays that game and continue to do that until he uses up his redshirt. That is a waste and not helpful to the team at that volume. That is Ryan Day level mismanagement like he did to McCord his freshman season. Now if you want to play him for full games and think he could be a solution, then do it and screw the redshirt. But that is not what is happening so far.

The Colgate play takes the cake. One play when you could just take a knee. And perhaps should have. Villari certainly could have taken a knee. And if he had fumbled and Colgate returned it for a TD... we still would have won by quite a lot. We could have let the 3rd string kicker take the snap and take a knee.

The one play really makes no sense.

My hope was that either he didn't/doesn't plan to use him sparingly and also use up his redshirt. He still may not do so. Or that he was thinking that it is very likely he was going to be playing a good amount so it didn't matter. But that second scenario doesn't seem to be the case from what we have seen.
