legit question-----i have been critical of our defense this year mostly because they seem undersized and slower than our opponents. what made the difference against vt???did we make any changes or did we play the same scheme. i don't know enough about it. they seemed more confident, less hesitant etc. anyone with expertise have thoughts on this--thanks

Babers said they were more physical and it seems that the underclassmen are learning the system and feeling more confident in their assignments. Just My Opininon.

The DB's were closer to their areas and closed the gaps between them and the receivers. I may be wrong but there also may have been more blitz packages. The D-line put solid pressure on the QB and once again I may be mistaken but didn't Wilson play more snaps? I thought he did a nice job of not being pushed into bad gaps and held his ground.

This defense is a better scheme when we are playing with a lead. Babers also mention that post game letting them play fast and loose. It seems our offense puts pressure on the opposing offense to keep up and play fast leading them into mistakes and doing things they aren't used to doing.

It's also better when we're playing against a more traditional run based team, and a QB who isn't a superior passer.

That's why I think we're going to fare better than people think against BC, NC State, and Pitt.

Losing that winnable WF game was a huge blow to bowl eligibility... dammit.

One of these is not like the others. Pitt can score points and Peterman is more than capable. He's not the next D.Marino, but he is quite good. Just want to point that out.

VaTech and Fuente don't run that kind of offense. But I think that BG played Memphis last year helped a ton.

I think they cut down on the mental mistakes in the secondary, brought a bit more pressure, and confused their QB.

We were also playing with a lead and their QB was pressing some. That's where there is some magic between our O/D schemes.

Of the 3, I think NCST will be the toughest. They definitely look stronger than Va Tech.

I saw more blitz packages too which lends to theory they are more confident w assignments

Agreed. They were definately bringing more pressure and leaving the corners on the island. Somehow, this game it seemed to work.

It's because they're starting to understand. Again, never was a "lack of talent".

Steve what did you think of the video from the locker room and how pumped was Steve after the game?

Much more physical play at the line of scrimmage across the board- d line and CB up on the outside. Fredericks was a nice surprise.

The LBs have settled in and are reading better. A lot of this was the front four doing a nice job of controlling the line of scrimmage.

I don't think they blitzed any more. I think they just executed them much better. As bcubs said the players are starting to figure out the system.

Someone though has to get Pickard to line up onside.

I am still pissed about that loss.

With the injuries to the starters on D, the young kids had to get a feel for teh defense, speed of play and their assignments in the system. We saw the effect of a simple, well planned Defense and the maturing of the players. Defense is easier to pick up than Offense. I still think these kids improve on D as the season progresses but this is a good D. As BCubs stated, it "never was a "lack of talent"".

The Tech QB missed several open receivers but I chalk that up to increased pressure. There were a coupe instances in which Tech appeared to be confused on offense as well -- great example on the 4th down stuff of the QB run in the second half.

Good job by our guys sealing on the outside with the run. That has been an issue at times.

And the D may work better with a lead (why not?) but we have been leading most opponents early and nit winning. See Louisville for a great example.

Bunch of factors IMO.

Ellison continues to play well. He is our best S since Shamarko IMO. Will be interesting to see what happens when Cordy is back. Hope we see a 4-2-5.

The LBs are playing better since the 2nd half of the UConn game.

Wilson had a good game. Where did that come from? Why hasn't he been able to get on the field before?

We got a little lucky on a few plays.

The D seemed motivated from the get go.

VA Tech doesn't have the speed at QB or RB to hurt us in the run game.

They also don't have the passing attack to hurt us with big plays.

The first half we were winning on 1st and 2nd down, forcing them to pass.

The 2nd half the D struggled until we took the lead back at 24-17. Then they closed the game great. Momentum and the crowd pushed them home.

VA Tech can't win in the Dome. Can't wait to beat them again in 12 years.

Our D played tough against WF for most of the game too. I presumed the weather played a huge factor. Alternatively, maybe our D has been better for 2 games now, we just couldn't recognize the improvement until last Saturday. Maybe this is the new normal.

Not sure that's the example you mean (playing with the lead and all).
