200 yards rushing given up per game
opponents average 5 yards per rush
165 passing yards given up per game
6 yards per offensive play surrendered

So, when does Shafer start earning his pay?

The defense gave up half that point total yesterday.

Ridiculous.

Did he earn any of his pay at halftime?

Special teams deserves a good deal of the blame for the points allowed.

They need to do better, but you have to take into account that 1/3 of the yds they have given up on run defense have come on four plays.

Fair enough. And, special teams, as we all know, have been a problem. I am concerned that the defense will struggle particularly against teams with power run games. I think that is why MPB was little to be seen late in the game.

What is really concerning is that it was clear what SB was going to do from the outset, and they went right out and did it. Sure, Shafer made the necessary adjustments at half-time. But, why weren't they prepared?

Didn't Rahme's P-S article say that SB came and actually did things differently than everyone expected based on past games and film?

Since Shafer stepped foot on campus his D has kept us in games. A lot of them we didn't even deserve to be in. I have more faith in Shafer than anyone else earning a salary in the athletics department.

He hasn't been perfect by any means but has shown the most consistency week in week out, without a doubt.

The defense is actually allowing 29 points per game.

Northwestern got 14 points from a returned fumble and a returned punt.

The defense is once again not very good though. The tackling is shoddy by the guys who need to make tackles (linebackers/safeties) and DDavis and Diabate are liabilities at linebacker. Diabate looks like a small safety out there. Davis misses a lot of tackles and I don't think he's strong enough. Diabate doesn't read plays well and gets over powered. They are both hurting in the run game. The SB running backs are D1 backs but they were bouncing off the first contact and we needed to gang tackle them to bring em down.

I swear every SB run was to the right side.

It's a shame we don't have D1 sized linebackers outside of Spruill in year 4. Though it's a also a shame that guys like EJ Carter and Malcolm Cater are no longer on the team. Cater would be a beast as our starting MLB. We need to recruit bigger linebackers and we've started to but it's a couple of years to late.

I like Wilkes, he can be a big hitter but he should be embarrassed by the effort on Maysonet. Our safeties are tiny again. Doesn't seem like we're getting very good run support from the safeties.

The missed tackles are maddening. Our players reportedly put up some impressive strength numbers, so it has to come down to technique.

It seems they just have inordinately short arms. Imagine a TRex trying to tackle a Triceratops.

The D has played well thus far this year. But to be fair his D has been wildly inconsistent. Just take a look at 2010. IMO he D thus far has been about matchups. If his system matches up well we look awesome. If not we look awful. Not much in between.

Our LBs and DEs are going to be a problem the rest of the year. Maybe next year as well. It would be nice to see what a Shafer D would look like with a full deck.

special teams for sure.

marcus sales and jerome smith didnt help either.

IMO, the defense has out played my expectations with the eye test.

It is similar to Nassib's stats on sat. that was IMO by far his worst game of the season but hit QBR was the highest.

How long before Lyn is starting and Anderson is on the bench? Anderson got burned on the first play and lost 2-3 battles last week against USC albeit against some very good WR's, but I still like Lyn more when he's out there.

I'm sorry, is this bad?

No, it's not. But opponents are getting too much production from those yards. A lot of that is getting lit up in the redzone by NWestern and USC on short fields.

They ran at MPB, who is 230 lbs.

Next year we're going to have a lot of defensive linemen, and a lot of defensive backs. But too few linebackers, especially in the middle.

Yes. The right side is MPB, DDavis and obviously Diabate in the middle with the tackle on that side in a rotation. It really seemed like every SB run was to that side.

On that Maysonet play we were in a 5/2. Davis lining up at end got kicked out to the sideline by the tackle. MPB stunted inside toward the center. Diabate filled the hole but got taken down by a pulling guard and in turn Spruill got caught in that block and tripped over Diabate. You could then drive a truck through that hole when Diabate go run over. Maysonet hurdled the DB and then Wilkes who the knows what he was thinking. He bumped into Maysonet coming down from the hurdle. Wilkes should've made that tackle right there.

So, what exactly caused the problem? Was it that MPB was out of position? Had he stayed outside to contend with the RT and not have Davis there, would that have helped?

MPB crashed too hard. Have to play their gaps and would imagine he had guard/tackle B gap responsibility. But Dyshawn has to set the edge better. May be asking him to do too much. Having Spruill out there, the SAM, would have made more sense. Having Dyshawn take on a tackle is really setting him up to fail.

You can see in that play that Davis was being held by #69. A missed call by the officials helped along with some good blocks and a few missed tackles.
