so we started October going 9 deep...

Cooney looked lost and slow. down to 8.
Grant is lost in the 2-3 right now. down to 7.5?
Coleman... Coleman... Coleman... he played the opening tips of each half and was out. down to 7?

We'll see how it plays out... but in a relatively easy game from the tip, JB benched all 3.

I don't think he considered that an easy game. I think he wanted to make sure he got the win in the books.

We're fine. The only thing separating yesterday from an exhibition is that the win counts.

we were up 17-4 and i... i dont... i dont believe... i dont believe the... i dont believe the lead ever dropped into single digits.

It wasn't an easy game at all. It would have taken 2 or 3 possessions for that to turn into a barn burner. JB didn't want that happening especially with the crazy conditions. No way in heck should you base anything on what you saw in this game. It just was nothing like any other game we will play again, ever.

well, i can still base what i saw in the exhibitions on cooney and grant.

we will see what happens... it will be interesting.

I can see Cooney resting. He's only value-added at this point if he's shooting and that wasn't really an option. I would have left Coleman in there until he played about 20 minutes, fouled out or the game really tightened up. He needs the exposure to physical games and we may not have another one until conference play.

So, we should put a 3 point specialist into a game where the direction is not to shoot threes? Bad game for Trevor to debut. He will contribute.

We learned that Southerland is the third guard (at least if the other team isn't pressing); and that Keita has improved some -- enough to keep his role.

Up to Cooney & Grant to play their way in.

Cooney is still recovering from surgery. JB also must have told them not to shoot 3s. I don't think we took one 3 in the 2nd half and at one point MCW was wide open and passed up the 3. He never does that. So that takes away Cooney's strength if he isn't allowed to shoot 3s. Cooney will get more time and he wasn't that bad besides the one fast break foul which I've seen the best players make that stupid play. It happens.

I don't expect Grant to play much this year and was surprised how long he was even in there.

Coleman Seems to lose the ball a lot down low. He catches it fine but on his move he loses it. If he wants the ball in the post he needs to not get stripped or lose it. Seems like in the two exhibition games and in the last game this happened.

Coleman turned the ball over 2 twice when trying to pass out of the double team and was benched for it. JB mentioned in the presser that they hadn't gone over that yet in practice. Cooney can't play in a no jump shot game at this point of his career.

yea and that is when he put in a lineup of all 4 backups with triche

There were too many shiny objects for the freshmen yesterday- they'll be fine.

So true. First game, against a ranked opponent essentially playing in their back yard, in a weird game environment.

All three of the frosh will be fine once they get a few games under their belts and get their sea legs, now that we're in the tune up portion of the schedule.

A game that comes down to quick drives and getting to the rim and no outside shooting is not a game that Cooney should get minutes in. DC2 is not quick enough to play on the wing in the zone so if Keita plays well he can take DC2's minutes. It's as simple as that. DC2 will continue to improve but watching Keita he played really well. They can't both play.

it was an outdoor game against a ranked opponent 3 time zones away less than a month after the start of practice

it was wise of JB to lean on his veterans in this situation . . . we should not draw any hasty conclusions from this game, good bad or indifferent.

Cooney looked like a slow-footed midget out there. More of a testament to how freakish the rest of our team is.

I thought Coleman was playing in the middle yesterday. At least for some possessions.

Actually, I think Cooney was more active in the zone than MCW. MCW got beat off the dribble all day in the zone. He needs to get his butt down on defense. He was a sieve on the top of the zone. CJ, Southerland and Christmas weren't a whole lot better. That's why they went to the foul line 30 times.

Cooney will get minutes every game

Exactly, he is the 3rd true guard scholarship player on the team. He will play for sure. Even with Dirty sliding over to the 2.

Looking forward to bellowing: "COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONEY".

Dumb statement regarding Cooney--not the right environment to showcase his weapons. Southerland played more (without taking 3s) because he is a lot bigger and can add more of other things.
Dumb statement regarding Coleman--not the right defensive game for him to play. Keita played more because he can run and jump more.
Really dumb to say it was an "easy" game. SDSU is likely a much better team when they shoot their 3s and FTs indoors. It was a very difficult game for both teams. JB had more to work with and made better decisions because he is a better coach. His "benched" players were not the right ones to play this game; it means nothing more than that. Period.
My apologies if you posted all this in jest.

Cooney looked neither lost nor slow to me. I thought he played good D except for one foul that resulted in a continuation basket.
