Derrick Coleman

Was that Kenny Anderson at the end? Listen you dumbarse, you had a chance to play with him and win a championship in college but you backed out and took a bag. Yeah, you went to the FF with Tech, but you’d have a trophy if you put on the Orange jersey.
Sure. You can feel that way. All of that being said, DC was ahead of his time. Sure he had issues - he could have been one of the all-time greats in the NBA if not for a number of factors - blood clots, his personal habits, etc. That doesn’t diminish the fact that he was absolutely one of the best college players of all time.

For the record, I was bashing Kenny Anderson, not DC.

DC is one of my all time favorite Orangemen, always will be despite his recent spats with SU. Just a dominant player. The original Windex Man.

IMO, best SU player I ever watched. (Didn’t see Bing)

Yeah, but that free throw in 87...

;)

My recollection is he, too, missed the front end.
I believe he just missed the backend, after his miss we played an ole’ defense because we were afraid to foul and IU came down and scored in like 4 seconds. What could have been a 4 point lead and we could have dropped back into our regular D became a one point game in a matter of seconds. It hurts typing this.

This reel brought me a huge smile. Thank you for posting it, albanycuse .

I met and talked with DC at the Final Four in Atlanta in 2013. Strong opinions, but the trademark badass/friendly/brash confidence was engaging and wonderful, and his generosity of spirit in humoring a nerdy fan was very memorable. He and Sean McDonough were the coolest.

100%! And, just before his front end miss, Monroe, missed the back end of his and went 1-2. :(

All these years later, it still pains me so.
I think it was Triche who missed the back end before Derrick. I think it was Smart who scored almost immediately after his miss which made it a one point game before the final sequence.

One of the best players I watched at SU was Derrick Coleman. Here's what happened on his FT attempts in the CH game vs Indiana:

Coleman's freshman year was an eventful one. The expectations of the team were low, and yet the right mixture of talent was on the team. The team started out 15-0, ran through the Big East winning the regular season title (but losing in the Big East finals to Georgetown). Coleman would win the Big East Rookie of the Year honors. Then the team pulled the miraculous, and made a phenomenal run through the NCAA tournament reaching the championship game for the first time in school history. In the championship game, Coleman had a outstanding evening pulling down 19 rebounds (an NCAA freshman tournament record). >>Unfortunately for Syracuse and Coleman, he missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with about 30 seconds to go that would have sealed the victory for the Orangemen, instead watching Keith Smart hitting the game winning jumper with five seconds to go.<<

Coleman spent 15 years in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76'ers, Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons.

Coleman would be named to the Big East Conference 25th anniversary first team in 2004, and to the Syracuse University All Century team in 2000. His uniform was retired by Syracuse University in March 2006.

I think that year, which was the first of numerous where we were pretty bad in general from the FT line, we shot 65% for the season.

In the NC game, we shot 11 - 20 from the FT line, or 55% [easy math].

If we'd hit our average from the stripe [2 more points]...
