His dad is pretty positive about UCONN. BTW - this was not a UCONN reporter, but a national one “Right now with everybody so far, it’s the ‘2’ and the ‘3’. Some want him to play some ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’,” Jones Sr. said. “With UConn, it could be anywhere, ‘cause that’s how they like to play; they like to be able to shift you in and out. So Derrick could go from, depending on where he’s playing, from the small forward to running the point. “He definitely gets out in transition and he definitely plays well in transition, but he also has been getting real strong in the halfcourt set as well,” he continued. “I think he can adapt to any one of the systems. It’s really up to him where he wants to go, but I think he can adapt to any environment that you put him in.” While he can fit in almost anywhere basketball-wise, there are other factors that will influence Jones’ eventual decision. Primarily, the allure of big-time college basketball is something that appeals to him. “He definitely likes the big crowd and the big stage. He’d definitely like to be televised of course,” Jones Sr. said. “The systems that they run, he likes UConn ‘cause of the way they get out and play; they’ll run that fast break or they’ll get in the half court set and play if they have to. Really, at the end of the day, I’m looking at is as ‘Who’s gonna fit him the best?’ He likes the national stage, he likes the attention, he likes those things.” Now that he has cut his list, Jones is still not looking to make a decision anytime soon. He has yet to visit most of the schools on his list. UConn will be conducting an in-home visit on September 11, and Jones Sr. is hoping more schools reach out to do the same. However, Jones will wait until after the high school season to take his official visits and ultimately make his decision.
